I have to agree. The gaming industry has taken an unpleasant lean towards unintelligent games... they seem to believe that if a game has any sort of intelligence to it, then it's not fun. So, they removed too many controls, nuances, and subtleties that made PC games good games.

Unfortunately, this becomes self-propagating, as people become accustomed to such games, and simply do not find anything that requires the use of their brain to be fun... which causes the intelligent games to die-off.

I loved the entire Myst series. As well as the old logic-games like "The Dig," by Lucas Arts, or some of the original RTS games, like the first Dark Reign, or Total Annihilation (not the mid evil one).

I like the fourth one for being so damn pretty. Odd how graphics got worse for the fifth game.

I think the second one had the most depth though.

I'm still pissed that my best friend stole Riven from me when we were 9...I'm 17 now. It's a long term hatred, now I just have to FIND a copy of it, and convince my mom that me touching her computer is not what slows it down, but it is in fact the 28 PDF's that she has open at any given time.

I like it. My dad really likes puzzle games or games with endings. He was the kind of person who would play through a game making meticulous notes and then write them up for his walk through page ( [link] ). I know he's played Myst because I've helped him solve some of the puzzles, but now I can't seem to find his walk through =/

None of you smoke? Ok, come on, back to the Library, to rotate the Tower, to get the bloody combination, to go back to the stupid fucking Log Cabin and finally back to the Great Pine! Y'know, all I ask for is a lil cooperation from you folks...you don't happen to have two twigs you can rub together? Huh? No? Fine. We're walking, walking..."

I liked Riven best (Myst 2). The landscapes were just so lush. And the ending was a complete Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Still, Myst is the trendsetter, and as such is being remade for Nintendo DS and mobile devices alike.

Great guide, Jack. Especially number 8.

cyber-akuma In reply to ??? [2007-12-10 09:19:16 +0000 UTC]

I had the game, but I never finished it.

Yeah, it was a very impressive visual work but the puzzels were insanely obscure, and it was hard to know how to get the good "ending".

*SPOILERS BEGIN*

You basically have no way of knowing which twin is the good one and which one is the bad one, but helping either gives you the bad ending, you basically have to do exactly what they tell you not to do right near the end to get the good ending, and even then its not much of an ending, your reward is to explore the island that you already spent hours exploring and solved all the puzzels forever.... yay?

*SPOILERS END*

It felt weak because if you know what happens, you can basically skip 99% of the game and beat it in about 2 minutes with the good ending, and the world was just so empty, theres practically nobody on the island or any of the other worlds you visit.

A few years later RealMyst was made, which is a re-make of what the creator originally wanted Myst to be but was not technologically possible at the time, basically, its Myst all rendered in 3D first person allowing you to look anywhere and move in realtime instead of basically have the entire game made out of video files.

I was interested in it mainly because I love the point-and-click/adventure genra, there were many popular games like those before, especially my Lucasarts, like the Monkey Island games, Loom, Beneath a Steel Sky, Full Throttle, and just about any game Lucasarts made back in the dos/win95 days that was not Star Wars. Also some non-lucasarts ones like Guilty and it's sequel Innocent.

These games are rare and few nowadays though, I heard a few came out on PC recently but supposedly they werent that great, a few have been coming out on handhelds and consoles though that are pretty good, like Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk for the DS, or Zack and Wiki for the Wii.

.... sorry, I can ramble on at times.... chances are nobody is even going to read what I wrote.

Still like the game and it probably explains why I have more brainpower than most of my classmates. awesome comic brings back good memories.

I finished this one with my father, helping each other when things got messy. But since weΒ΄re kinds of "adventure players rivals" we tend to play by ourselves instead of seing each other playing.
Me and him are old adventure farts.

Good old times...
