Nail, head, HIT!

You summed up my feelings about MYST near perfectly, Jack. I was hoping you'd get this one.

I really wish I could play MYST Online again, but the only computer I had that was strong enough has gone blooey, and I don't yet have enough cash to replace it.

But, yes. The first one was the best. As much as I enjoyed Riven, I just never got that same feeling of serenity that I got from MYST.

It was... it was also the most challenging. Each sequel got successively dumbed down. I stopped playing after beating Myst III in one afternoon.

I have that game; got horribly stuck and never finished it. Maybe I should (on a weekend where I can put everything else aside and do that for 48 hours straight so I can get my bearings).

The "How to Play" comics are making my day!

Please tell me you're talking about the fireplace puzzle in frame 5. I hated that. I actually tried every single pattern in that book, and none worked. When I went back with a guide and realized that I had simply just missed one square I was...well, let's just say people needed to die for that.

Had the game for Sega Saturn.

Definitely one of the best games I've ever experienced. D; :: pines for the days when games were about gaming, and experiences::

Because of the game (the first that is, I never wasted any time with the other two...nor the online version, Urdu. Looked like a good concept though, a Myst MMORPG...), I actually bought a book inspired by it. :3 While not as ethereal or beautiful, it was still a pretty nice read. 8D

They had three, and it shows how deep the worlds are. You knew the world had a past and future even after you left, and this proves they they thought more about the game then most companys think about how to make, market, and redistribute a game

jdwunbound In reply to Photobeast [2007-12-11 22:41:58 +0000 UTC]

The Myst games is just a few on a list of games that are truly innovative, playable, and good ol' motherfukken fun! ;3

Seriously speakin' though, it's BECAUSE of these kinda games that I never left the world of gaming. ::nods:: Admittedly though, today my gaming normally centers around FFXI, but I still take time to play what games I got and plan on getting more...

Though, admittedly, I need to get updated console-wise. =TDT= PS3, Xbox360, Wii...I wanna get the whole trifecta. Plus what with the news about Dreamcast 2...

Admittedly, I enjoyed the Saturn more then the Dreamcast (I'm a staunch supporter of Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, NiGHTS into Dreams), but hey, as long as Sega can throw a monkey wrench into the trio that currently run things it'd be awesome.

Hell, I still remember the days of Turbo Grafx-16 and Sega CD...:: sighs at his happy, if violent, childhood::

They may not be so quick to topple Marios throne. After all, Nintendo did take them in during a hard time. Its the enemy you know over then enemy you don't sort of thing

jdwunbound In reply to Photobeast [2007-12-13 23:47:56 +0000 UTC]

Who said anything about Nintendo toppling? :/ I'm as old skool as it gets, man...I was there when Nintendo began, and even though I haven't bought anything since the NES 8-bit (omfg I want a Wii so goddamn bad!), I still recognize that the Nintendo's international and domestic appeal is as long-lasting as the blue sky above.

There was no doubt that the Wii would sell well, despite the silly name (OHHHH How I miss craving "The Revolution!"), but you gotta remember: the Xbawks and the Pee Ess Triple are newbies in this business, compared to Nintendo, Atari, and Sega (the original "Next Gen" trio. >XD).

If you study economics or history at all, you'll notice that trends and patterns emerge. It's been YEARS since the Great Console War that spawned so many innovative, awesome, and ultimately fail consoles (Turbo Grafx 16, Sega Saturn, Lynx respectively)...but today there is once again the trio dominating the console realm.

Who knows, with Sega sparking rumors about Dreamcast 2, either one of the current three will fall or it'll once again spark off a massive wave of Consoles.

Hey, hey, perhaps they'll finally release The Phantom?! >XD

Me personally, I'd LOVE to see Square Enix rise up with their own console, not to mention Atari make a comeback.

Heh...heheheheh...>8D ::just...ENJOYS...the chaos!::

I would be surprised about a Dreamcast 2 so soon after Sega announced they where out of the console business

Atari would be even weirder. Infact, my baby sister has heard of them, only through me, That are an unknown to the newer generation due to a lack of anything big

Well, thankfully the Wii allows this new generation of baby gamers to play the old NEC games. :3 Turbografx 16 should NEVER be forgotten!!!!

My mom adores Myst, and I evidently played it... and this is so damn true. It made me smile. XD It reminded me of those many times my mom would spend ages trying to figure out the puzzles... ever since, she always buys the guides to every game we ever get. I think she was traumatized.

Ah Myst... so true. My parents used to play that series all the time. I was tiny, but I loved watching. I remember the third one or something had a cute little mouse thing I loved too. Now that I'm older, I started the first one but it was so old it kept crashing and I kinda gave up. But I have actually played Uru. The third person set up of Uru is more my style, but I don't mind the puzzles.

I still play this game.
Been playing it off an on ever since I could work a mouse.
I have NEVER beaten it (probably because I've never done no. 5).
I'd also like to say that the landscaping in MYST overwhelms everything I've ever seen in any other game... ever, even the ones that use higher grade renderings.
And what else? MAC! I'm no rabid Mac user, but it's nice to know that one of the gods of gaming started on Mac.

.. what's kind of sad to me is that I haven't played Myst since I was a kid -- and I didn't even finish it -- but I recognize those locations even with these simple drawings. Nice.

I've played a good number of adventure/puzzle games and sympathize greatly with #5. These sort of games have an amazing way of making me feel like a complete dumbshit.
