Even though I don't really use my phone that often, I'll try to keep that in mind...

......I don't eat at a dinner table. When I go out and eat, I don't text unless I've been in a conversation for a while. And even then I still manage to hold two conversations.

If I'm using my phone at the table I at least also carry conversation. However, I only ever have this problem when I'm out to eat, and I only ever go out to eat with my family.
I'd be much more likely to not use my phone at the table if all my ACTUAL friends weren't only able to communicate via the internet. My real friends are on the net, therefore I use my phone.

What about when you're the only teenager there and they're talking about things you don't care for like football or politics? What do I do then? Blankly stare into space and drive myself insane? I only use my phone at the table when I'm bored.

Then the adults around you are telling you that good manners no longer apply, by creating a social situation where a single person is left out of the loop. Since they're not bothering with courtesy, why would you?

Can you imagine what we did BEFORE the invention of the cellphone or texting? it's a time-honored tradition to be bored as a teen. Put away the phone and talk to the people in front of you. If you don't they could ground you from it -- or worse, cancel the service. As for conversations about things you don't care for, find out more about the subject. You never know, if you find out enough, you might enjoy it, or find a way to steer the conversation to something you'd rather talk about.

I try talking to them. But they usually just ignore me or talk about the subject I say about then leave me out again.

That's an entirely different situation. Keep in mind: you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family. And that sucks sometimes.

You listen to them and learn from what they say. Every bit of information can come in handy later on. This is what I hate about my generation and the new ones to come, ignorance to the point of where blank minds are ready to be filled with the sparkling colorful manipulative words of some company like the half-eaten pear. The football part would be something to use to socialize with. Stop wasting your time on meaningless highscores by cutting pixel fruits or writing about stuff nobody wants to hear anyway on Bookface, Fumblr or Instasellyoursoul.
Sorry for wasting your time.

1. Why would anthing about football be of any use to me? I hate everything to do with football, even the word annoys me.
2. I may be addicted to my phone, but I hate my generation otherwise. 12 year olds plastering in makeup? Boys thinking an education is nothing comared to 'swag'? Girls wearing skirts and shorts shorter than their underwear? I'd rather have been growing up a teenager in the years my parents did. At least I can comprehend things and be considered intelligent and even called mature for my age by more than a few adults. I can't stand this generation anymore than I already do.
3. I'm not on any of those websites. I'm talking to either my girlfriend, listening to music or roleplaying over text.

I find it so rude when a person does this! I've seen a couple on their first date both on their phones, not even talking. Just texting, even after their food came they still proceeded to text. It's just so damn rude.

But, as other posters have noted, what's the point of having a meal together if you're not even talking to one another? Kind of a "chicken and the egg" issue.

TechnicDragon In reply to Myrikay [2013-08-20 00:08:36 +0000 UTC]
The egg.
The egg came along LONG before the chicken.
So, to answer this dilemma, we need to look at the problem from further away. Which came first, talking during a meal, or texting during a meal. Β Hrms... I wonder!
But wait. If a group of people are sharing a meal and ALL of them are texting --- the real question you have to ask is, are they texting each other, or just texting about each other?
Oh, and one more: if they rode together, who's the unlucky stiff that has to drive everyone back and get stuck not texting during the ride?
This sounds like it requires an entire forum of texting, non-talking people to answer. I only hope none of them are having a meal together while working out the details. Β

I don't- need an answer to this dilemma. I don't have a phone, and if I did I wouldn't be using it at the table or in the car.

I went to the Chessecake Factory with some friends and family, just a regular get together. In the middle of me telling a story, one of said friends pulls out his phone, proceeds to check his FB status and then interrupts my story to tell everyone how so and so got into a fight with this girl on...FB.
I laughed with him for all of 3 seconds before I took his phone and chucked it in his glass.Β Told him next time I did that there would be water in it. He kept his phone in his pocket the rest of the night.

See, this is why I hate texting. If you're not going to listen to me, then don't pretend you're talking to me. If I know ahead of time that I'll be ignored, I can avoid having my time wasted. I hate it when people waste my time in such a way where they don't even think of it as wasting my time. Doubly-so for ignoring me in such a way where they believe they're not ignoring me.

Not as bad as playing with your phone (or other device) during a Dungeons & Dragons session.
When DMing over Skype, I heard one of my players playing Fire Emblem.

I dunno. To some extent that's kinda awesome.
The fact that you could hear them implies that they didn't even bother keeping the volume muted. As in, they had every reason to know you'd hear them. The epic shamelessness of that...

There is a very simple way to curb this behavior, It's called the phone stack.
Every one places their phone, Screen down, in a stack on the table.
First one to grab their phone pays for the meal.
