A good way to start is to join writer's groups and start making connections with other writers/poets. Most writer's groups are open to poetry too, at least as far as my experience goes. You'll be able to get feedback/critiques from other members of the group(s) and possibly connections to publishing houses.
There are also many opportunities online, including DA, but many more places, such as The Writer's Cafe (www.writerscafe.org/ ). There are also many tutorials on youtube you could check out (not to pat myself on the back, but I have one too. The link's in my signature below) that give great and diverse advice.
Also, be open to trying various suggestions, from the. If you're new to the publishing game then you don't know what works best for you, so don't pigeon hole yourself.Β

Thank you. Β I do write replies to poems that are insightful. Β I try to tell what I like about the poems or short stories. Β I think I write differently than most. Β Sure, I have the typical love poems that really bore me any more. Β I also have lots of villanelles and people just don't get it. Β Then I have very morbid and vile poems that have all varying warnings. Β People call me a cross between Poe and King as a poet. Β Also I don't write as well as I used to. Β I'm bipolar and before I got on meds I could write like crazy. Β Not so much any more. I mostly just write for fun but it is nice to get feedback. Β I will check out that site.

If you're suffering from a bit of writer's block, my usual advice is to try meditation before writing. Focus on your piece, what you want to do with it and where you want to take it. Let your subconscious do the difficult work, and once you've finished with your meditation try writing again. I think you'll find it much easier.

Honestly it usually writes it's self. Β At bed time though lines and lines run through my head, I can't shut them up! Β But when I try and write it it down it doesn't work. Β I do mediate in a way, each night because I don't sleep.

Very interesting and useful I think. Also, reassuring, especially to those who are either too shy to show their work or too perfectionist to finish. Remarkable thought about using ideas, I mostly just throw away 99% of them tagging them as ridiculous. One of the reasons I dont write anymore.

Thank you so much for creating something like this! It's my dream to be a published author someday, but truthfully, I don't know what steps that entails (after the writing process of course). I found this tutorial to be very helpful and informative! I hope a lot more people get to see it!

Oh dear. The very beginning of a story I want published one day is on here. Do you think I'll be fine if I take it down immediately?
By the way, this was a great tutorial. Very helpful, and for once I feel like someone's telling me the truth about getting published.

jomog369 In reply to PoorEccentric [2012-04-18 03:30:08 +0000 UTC]
Well, first thank you very much. I always try to tell the truth. It can be bitter like medicine, but it's better than the alternative.
Second, if you haven't put too much of the story online, you should be fine. If you haven't reached a point beyond where characters are being introduced, you may not even have to take the story down, though it probably is best to disable it for now. The reason I'm pointing this out is that sites like this one can be very useful for self advertising after you've published a story. If your story does get published you may be able to use this site as a way of advertising.

Okay, thanks for the additional info. It's only the first introduction that's up. I wrote it here before I realized that I could extend it. I think that I'll still go and take it down for now, though.

If you're looking for a place to find a publisher, may I suggest Duotrope.com it's a database / search engine exclusively for publishing houses and publishers. They have more than 4,150 different entries in their data pool. I imagine you'll find a place that would be interested.

Thanks for that info. I'll definitely be checking that out. Though for the time being it will only be for basic research. I don't have much written for the actual story yet and won't until I can think through what I want to happen.

The posting of one's own story online and how the publishers will reject the manuscript.
That i did not know and other information....that i don't remember >_>...but i knew they would come in handy once i read it again.

Hey, thanks for checking me out! Simply, compose an article you think might fit, or be interesting to other writers, creators, self-publishers, etc - plus any links back to your own or affiliated webpages or sites - and I'll post it ASAP at the Fenriswulf page. Simples!

It's one of about twenty short stories in the Elf Love anthology, which you can check out here [link] I also have a story in the other anthology, Rapunzel's Daughters, FYI.
