Description I've finally finished Seele Schneider, the only bladed Quincy weapon.

The hilt is made from a combination of pine wood, plywood and basswood. It's constructed like a box, with a removable lid held in place by two strong magnets. The end with the finger whole is made from one piece of pine wood.
The hilt contains 4 AA batteries and a switch which power an LED string to make the blade glow.

The blade itself is made from 4 layers of 4mm sheet acrylic. With the two centre pieces having a cutout for the LED string.
The LED string comes from a Master Replicas Lightsaber, which I bought seperately from JQLightsabers. co.uk [link] They do Lightsaber conversions which involve removing the LED string and replacing it with a Luxeon LED, so have stock of these LED strings which can be bought cheap.

I've tried a variety of methods to difuse the light from the blade, but haven't been able to get it perfect. It looks better in the pictures then it does in real life.

If people are interested on how any of it's made just post a request and I'll write up more detail.

I also made a few 3D models prior to starting to get an idea of how I can get it to all fit together. You will need the Viewpoint plugin to be able to view them www.viewpoint.com

I've submitted a Deviation showing the electronic setup, which can be seen here [link]

Can it cut?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonsProjects In reply to Terror-From-Beyond [2009-04-08 09:03:05 +0000 UTC]

Nope, it has a flat edge. There is a bevel on it, but doesn't come to a point.

Terror-From-Beyond In reply to JonsProjects [2009-04-08 22:13:43 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I was wondering if that has shape has any effect on the lighting. And partly because that would make it even cooler.

JonsProjects In reply to Terror-From-Beyond [2009-04-09 08:15:55 +0000 UTC]

The blade could be beveled more, and this would make the light disperse differently. But I would have to be careful otherwise it might make the blade weaker and crack.

This is a technique I have got to try.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonsProjects In reply to fixinman [2009-04-08 09:05:04 +0000 UTC]

I'd highly recommend it, although I found it very difficult working with acrylic. My files kept getting clogged when I was beveling the blade.

fixinman In reply to JonsProjects [2009-04-09 00:53:25 +0000 UTC]

Use a belt sander. That's what I used to shape the shards for Adamant Barrage. Or you can hand sand it but it's slower.

JonsProjects In reply to fixinman [2009-04-09 08:14:56 +0000 UTC]

I was contemplating getting a fixed belt/drum sander station to do this. Although I could buy a regular belt sander and make a jig, this would be the cheaper option.

fixinman In reply to JonsProjects [2009-04-09 21:28:38 +0000 UTC]

I mostly use a regular belt sander. It's good for shaping things like blades and such. Mind you my bench one is only a 1" belt with a 5"disc. A bigger one might be better, but I was given this one.

JonsProjects In reply to fixinman [2009-04-16 13:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, see if I can get a belt sander for my next acrylic sword.

fixinman In reply to JonsProjects [2009-04-17 02:02:19 +0000 UTC]

Actually I use it for everything. I can do a handle in five minutes and a blade in ten. It is great for shaping.

Realm-Of-The-Shadows [2009-04-04 04:57:11 +0000 UTC]

interesting!

What I want to know is, are there truly flourescent acrylic materials like this in the RGB colors? (been seeking out those materials for so long for a sword project I'm doing)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonsProjects In reply to Realm-Of-The-Shadows [2009-04-04 13:31:23 +0000 UTC]

The plastic itself is just transparent acrylic. The light just comes from the LED string within the blade. I've posted the electronics in a seperate deviation [link]
