Description I've finally finished Seele Schneider, the only bladed Quincy weapon.

The hilt is made from a combination of pine wood, plywood and basswood. It's constructed like a box, with a removable lid held in place by two strong magnets. The end with the finger whole is made from one piece of pine wood.
The hilt contains 4 AA batteries and a switch which power an LED string to make the blade glow.

The blade itself is made from 4 layers of 4mm sheet acrylic. With the two centre pieces having a cutout for the LED string.
The LED string comes from a Master Replicas Lightsaber, which I bought seperately from JQLightsabers. co.uk [link] They do Lightsaber conversions which involve removing the LED string and replacing it with a Luxeon LED, so have stock of these LED strings which can be bought cheap.

I've tried a variety of methods to difuse the light from the blade, but haven't been able to get it perfect. It looks better in the pictures then it does in real life.

If people are interested on how any of it's made just post a request and I'll write up more detail.

I also made a few 3D models prior to starting to get an idea of how I can get it to all fit together. You will need the Viewpoint plugin to be able to view them www.viewpoint.com

you are serious!
you actually went all the way to put a light inside of the blade?!
wow! that must of been a real challenge?
but it pushes you and gives you more experience to make better swords right?
again!
nice one!

Yup
Working with acrylic was a real challenge, it clogged up the files like made, lucky I had my trusty metal brush for cleaning them.

If you have the equipment yes, clamps are a must. Just make sure you don't clamp too tight or your risk cracking it.

cool. dam I need to get the full Blech anime series seems there so many cool things inside I that I too got as similar idea in some ways.

It would be cool if you could do a tutorial n how you done this seele schneider. it is realy cool looking with the led inside.

the acrylic you use.. how good was it to work with? I just got the idea to try make a Katana out of translucent blue brown acrylic.. so it would look very dark itself but also have a light inside to give a very decent dark blue glow from its inner.

JonsProjects In reply to BlackTowerOfTime [2008-05-11 21:05:57 +0000 UTC]

Acrylic was a bit of a pain to work with. I started with a fine tooth jigsaw, but found that this just melt the plastic and as you pushed it, would reform behind the cut. That meant that the piece would stay whole. I tried using water to keep the plastic cool, and this worked for a bit, but it was bloody freezing outdoors so I abandoned that technique.
I then switched to my circular saw, but this chiped the wood sometimes, so I had to take great care and work slow. There was also a lot more flaking of the plastic, so googles are a MUST.

Another thing I would change if I did this again was the glue, I used Uhu glue which worked well expect it dried yellowish. This doesn't matter when the blade is turned on because the blue easily outpowers it, but when off you can see it.

BlackTowerOfTime In reply to JonsProjects [2008-05-11 21:47:35 +0000 UTC]

yeah glue together is also a difficult thing. I play with the thought to make a mould and than fill it with this liquid acrylic compund that hardens total clear. Did you have any experience in polishing acrylics.. I think its hard and time consuming to get all the scratch and not proper edges again glossy bright and clear.

JonsProjects In reply to BlackTowerOfTime [2008-05-11 22:44:51 +0000 UTC]

I don't have any experience in finishing acrylic, I just sanded and coated it in glass frosting spray paint, to get better light difusion. I might use some sort of paint to make it look blue though. I'll see what hobby craft has.

BlackTowerOfTime In reply to JonsProjects [2008-05-12 10:09:10 +0000 UTC]

maybe you can use a blue translucent color used for glass(back)painting

The glow doesn't look as even in daylight, but I'll guess you'll see at the Expo.
