Description
Download for full-size image. Page 1 here [link]A couple of people have been asking how to do lightsabers. I usually refer them to the really good tutorials on youtube for Photoshop users. But I'm sure there are a few out there, like myself, who can't afford Photoshop. So I figured I would do a tutorial of the way I do lightsabers. Now this is using the same old Paint Shop pro I bought back in 2000, so some of the tools I use probably won't be exactly the same as Photoshop.
And who knows, maybe I'll give some of them fancy Photoshoppers some new ideas

I think I might try this effect on the eye for a GLaDOS drawing.

I have Photoshop, but it's Photoshop Elements, which is like the trial version and came with only half the options and no instruction manual, so I like this! Very cool, very cool...

Very nice tutorial. My method is similar but you're one of the first people I've seen in a very long time that realizes the blade itself is white. To me, that makes it look authentic.

Thanks. Like they say, the best special effects are the ones you don't notice. The first few times I tried coloring a lightsaber I couldn't figure out why they never looked right .
And you got some sweet looking sabers in your gallery too.

Pretty much what I do to make light insensitive sabers, though the glow is much more poignant in mine. I'll have to try this.

Thanks this is a big big help. You wouldn't believe how long I've been looking around for a way to draw light sabers. Photoshop's Outer Glow feature doesn't quite hack it and your right about the white area providing the glow and the very transparent/subtle brushwork to define the color of the saber. Great tutorial!
