A quick & dirty tutorial on a magical light burst effect that I've been using a lot lately. May be helpful, maybe not...thought I'd shareRelated content

This is a great tutorial!
In order to spare a few steps, I came up with an alternative method, though:
Rather than using a black -> white gradient, why not use black -> transparent (on a new layer, ideally)? When you do that, it circumvents the need for that whole Quick Masking section, and you're left with the completed effect the moment you add the Polar Coordinates filter!

Oh hey, I was just looking for a way to do this exact thing. I'd been using Filter -> Stylize -> Wind to make the stripes before Polar Coordinates, and the results were pretty lame. Wave works much better.
