Description
My most ambitious Photoshop manipulation.I scanned the cover of People Magazine (May 2000) which was "The Fifty Most Beautiful People in the World 2000."
They had chosen Julia Roberts for the cover.
In Photoshop I extracted all the elements of the image to layers and finally erased Julia Roberts and replaced her with a photo of my wife, Bee. Then I dropped all the elements back onto the background, leaving me with this.
I then printed the image and pasted it over the original cover of the magazine. I laid it on a table in the living room and said nothing. Finally, Bee saw the magazine as she walked by it (for about the fiftieth time), and did the world's biggest double-take.
She took it to work with her to show it around. One of the people there said "This is amazing! But I can't find the article!"
Update, Sept 11, 2010.
The image shown is the image I used in my photo manipulation. As I noted in my journal, People magazine demanded that I remove the deviation. I'm sure that sketchybob is very proud.

She is beautiful, though, don't you think? She deserved to have her picture on the cover!

I pulled up the elements with the "magic wand" and copied them to a new layer. Each element took several passes to copy, and then required some touching up. Finally I removed the background, the original image, and replaced it with Bee's photo. Since my Photoshop skills are minimal, it took me a lot longer than it should have! Still, I was pleased with the results, and, more importantly, Bee was pleased with the final product.

Hell it looks great, didn't think magic wand tool would work so good on this, yet I guess the text fragments are one complete colour so it is rather logical thinking of it. I'm very charmed by this, what a nice attention for your wife

I'm sure that a Photoshop wizard would have used different techniques, done it faster and done it better!
I'm pleased that you are charmed by the work!

I think it would more or less be done in the same way, with magic wand tool or that magnetic lasso tool, yet that would take more time. And it's not the speed of the process that counts, it's how the result looks. Very nicely done, first time i saw it I thought it was a real magazine cover hehe.
Did you like that fotofriday thing i sent you?

JosephThomas In reply to Wodanislav [2007-07-08 10:29:14 +0000 UTC]
Yes, the proof is in the pudding, I guess. At least that's what they say. I'm not sure the Photoshop I was using had a magnetic lasso. If it did, I hadn't found it. I've tried it since with moderate success.
I haven't really followed up yet on the fotofriday thing, but will when I can!

It'a page that launches a photo every friday, and people are supposed to write about the shot.
It's quite interesting, and they noted me to ask if they could use one of my photos in the future. That was quite a revelation lol, I don't like my own gallery, quite often I feel like moving it all to scraps.
I'm extremely insecure about my work, that's why I don't post much.
The magnetic lasso can be found at the same place as the normal lasso,
you just have to rightclick it, and select the magnetic one: [link]

Yes, it did look interesting, I just haven't really examined it yet. I guess you must be wrong about your work!!
I've used the magnetic lasso in CS3, but not sure if it was in PS7. As I said, if it was I never found it!

Wodanislav In reply to JosephThomas [2007-07-08 10:42:20 +0000 UTC]
I don't have CS3 yet. I should look for a place to download it somewhere soon.
You can do a lot more with black and white images, that you couldn't do with CS2,
so I've read somewhere. I has some interesting new thingies.

did you print it on magazine-like paper?? i was thinking of doing a similar thing but im not sure how to get the right sort of paper for my image...

JosephThomas In reply to MalaikahJamila [2007-07-03 13:01:16 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I did. (Read the story!)
I used a photo paper, not the heavy, glossy stuff but lighter-weight, semi-glossy stuff. I has a sheen sort of like a magazine page. I worked so well that some people were actually fooled and thought it was the real cover.
