Description This idea just came to me and I couldn't let it go.
Originally I wanted to simply try drawing both Sonic and Sally in a more "realistic" manner, y'know, actually furry lookin' as opposed to a smooth cartoon. I guess I should give *ChakotayDgryphon credit and thanks for that is basically her style, and she makes it look great. Then of course, I start to doodle in my mind as to what sort of picture I could do like this, and it evolved into yet another SonSal concept >_<
Hope ye' all liketh.

Hiding, in my nearly 12 year old gallery. But it's definitely one I need to go back and try to gain inspiration from. People seem to have specifically asked to see more of this style.
Think I should?

It's funny, I've gotten specific commendation on the wedding rings, I didn't know matrimony was still a big thing nowadays But to me, it's massively rewarding as these two always danced around a serious relationship both in the cartoons and comics. So to see them both all cuddly and then actually hitched together, seems like the big payoff we as fans had always been waiting for.
Glad you like it! Always kinda saddened me I never truly returned to this fuzzy style.

Glad ya think so Seems silly from a grown adult, but the cartoon coupling of these two always stood as a standard to me as a child. Just seemed natural to evolve them after all this time to match my own standing on romance. Within appropriate bounds of course

Thank 'ya for the commentary and fav-marking!
I made an effort to make the fur look authentic, but at the same time I wanted them to be easily recognizable as their characters y'know? Wasn't looking to go into the more anthromorphic style with realistic anatomy and all, but I wanted to brainstorm how these two would look, say... in a next-gen video game that had high realism.
Only thing that stumped me was Sonic's spines. I didn't think it'd be cool to have him all furry and then have these few gigantic quills that looked weird. But I'm also not happy with covering them in fur since they are quills and really shouldn't.
I've since come up with a solution to that issue with another pic I'm doing in this style again. I'm looking forward to getting that one up

I'm glad you like the realism and the hair! Put a lot of care into getting that to look right. Although I still say *bringonthethunder is the Queen at drawing hair. It's definately something I try to improve on with each drawing.

You mean you've been a SonSal fan on DA and haven't come across *bringonthethunder before?!?
Definately, check her out. Unfortunately, she's had a problem with people violating her copyright, so she took down her gallery and is re-submitting it gradually. The one's she's putting back up have been upgraded to be even better with her current skills, but I lost a good many of my personal favourites ... at least I'd saved them to my mobile HD
But yeah, she's been an inspiration and envy of mine since bluestreak got me to join here and told me about her. And one of the number 1 things I think she does awesomely, is specifically hair. Check it out, she makes gorgeous locks of hair, she makes it flow in the wind, she just completely masters Sal's anatomy and fuzziness.
She's one of my true DA heroes. Or rather heroine...

But yes, MORE. I loved the way this style came out, and so do some of my more regular watchers. I've already come up with several sketch ideas revolving around this furry style.

~gootap : "... her art always show(ed?) up"
"showed" would be correct there You do know english pretty well, just gotta get s'more practice and you'll be perfect.

Not to my cellphone, that thing is a pain to browse online with, way too slow. I've a little 260 GB USB hard-drive I carry around with me. I've a whole collection of stuff on there from game and movie trailers to galleries of DA artists. With that and my Zune to store and play music on, I've very little use for CDs nowadays

Yup, I met BS on FUS for the first time. My life on that site was extremely short-lived now that I think of it But I saw a thread he had with his art, and it inspired me to want to draw again (used to scribble all kinds of crap as a kid. People told me I was good, but I never seriously tried to develop it. Got out of the practice of drawing for many years.) I'd heard of DA several times, but never really checked it out. He persuaded me to join up, and here I am about 2 years later now, a dedicated subscriber.
Blue introduced me to bringonthethunder's gallery pretty soon after my joining, so I've been a fan of her for a while now. She was a sweetheart and became one of my first watchers too, very nice gal all around. Her art is my heroine! I've been hooked on it

thanks ^^ practice is important.

>_> 260 GB? Isnt that a portable harddrive or something? I mean...USB with 260 GB? LOL?

Ive got an usb with 4 GB... I have halflife on it, Haha!

i like CD's, thats the way artists make money (thay also makes money at concerts) if no'one buys CD's, artists cant make music anymore but meh, the music nowadays sucks anyways...

"used to scribble all kinds of crap as a kid" lol

Ok.

i had a dream last night (wtf?) it started with Ratatouille (i was Remy, kinda...) and it ended with halflife and me getting killed by afrikans? i want more fun dreams haha

double post?

Joshels In reply to gootap [2008-02-26 05:54:31 +0000 UTC]

Yup, it's a 260GB Western Digital portable USB harddrive. Less than an inch thick, fits comfortably in your pocket. Rocks my socks off
I thought I was cool in school with a stupid 2.5GB USB HD, now they've got thumbdrives with way more like yours. I'm looking to upgrade to a bigger brick of an external drive with a full tera-bite though. That won't be USB

No no, don't get me wrong. I still buy stuff on CD. I like having the original hard copies, and I definately agree with supporting the artists by buying their albums. What I meant by "I've little use for CDs" is that after I rip those discs onto my PC, and my mobile HD, I then put it onto my Zune and I really don't use the original CDs anymore besides in the car. And I don't burn data on CD-R's anymore, I just move it to my mobile HD in a few seconds, and away we go to the next PC with a USB port

That's a wicked crazy dream! You ended up in Hal-Life and wasn't killed by a head-crab zombie or a combine soldier, but by Africans...
I had a funky dream once where I was stuck in the Legend of Zelda world, only I didn't ride on a horse, I rode a magic carpet >.< And for some reason it all ended in a bathroom stall... ... but I remember it being super fun before that happened.

Yup, somehow I managed to sneak it past you it seems Had a preview of it in an old journal post without the shading, I guess this just got lost on your watchlist. Sorta had a hunch you missed it, wasn't gonna say nothing though
You would've found out soon, 'cuz I'm partway finished coloring it.

I'll say that when you get the hang of a fundament, fur and hair in this case, it's actually easier to make a realistic pic look awesome than a cartoon. Like what I say when drawing machines, vehicles, and armor: you can hide beneath detail to make it look better.

Of course, the point started off as trying a new style, but like always it changed to making Sally as gorgeous as possible. Thank you for saying she's adorable. And for noticing the rings too!

ChakotayDgryphon [2007-07-22 06:01:40 +0000 UTC]

*reads previous commentaries* There's nothing bad 'bout it. All I see are a Sonic and Sally that are simply comfortable with one another.

Yes, drawing them fuzzy definately makes them look better. Maybe I'm partial to the whole 'fuzzy-look,' but I've seen their "live" counterparts so often in person to have them drawn otherwise is so totally odd to me.

I love Sally's nose/muzzle. You always get it so spot on. She looks like she's saying some sly comment to which Sonic can only grin in return. And the shading is just too awesome. It gives the feeling of plush fur, which is I'm sure, totally the effect you were going for.

I was gonna say more, but I think my brain sacked out on me...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Joshels In reply to ChakotayDgryphon [2007-07-23 05:03:51 +0000 UTC]

Yay! I was looking forward to you getting to this on your backlogged watchlist

No, I'll agree that the fuzzy look is awesome. My only objection with it is that I'm far more used to seeing Sonic and co. drawn the more traditional way, so he looks sorta funny with a furry brow like this to me. BUT, that could change in a few more pictures done this way

Aw, well I'm very glad you think I get Sally's nose/muzzle spot on frequently, 'cuz that's one of the number one things I agonize over on her (that and her chest, I make a concious effort not to over-embellish on that ). It's sometimes kinda tough...depends on the angle of her face. So much thanks for saying I succeeded!
I'm extremely pleased with my getting over myself and diving headlong into traditional shading. I was a bit afraid to start "scribbling" all over my lineart before, but I've gained some confidence in my doing so responsibly now. Another "I'm very glad you think" for saying the shading came out awesome I consider that to be one of the real bits of brainwork when it comes to sketching. Unlike the anatomy of a character, there is no definate way to know how it should be done, you just gotta understand how shadows work.

So yeah, big hug and thank you for viewing, liking, faving, and replying!

Joshels In reply to freedomfighter4 [2007-07-17 06:01:54 +0000 UTC]

A loon?
No you certainly aren't a loon. In fact, I was hoping people would see the rings. That's what makes the title work
I actually came up with a short story of how they compromise for each other and get married. After years of struggling and persevering, going through a difficult time with their relationship, finally they get serious and live...yes that's right, "happily ever after" as a married couple. Tried to convey that with the way Sally's just so comfortably snuggling up against Sonic, and he's just equally thrilled to have her there, pure marital bliss.

I'm liking the furry look a whole lot myself. And I spent a lot of time with the poses/expressions on this one. Previously, I'd restrained myself from drawing any sort of passion between the two aside from cute little romantic stuff. This one made me think twice about uploading, but bah, glad I did. It's quite possibly one of the best things I've drawn sofar, I am proud of it.
Thanks for enjoying it
