Description
... although many of you will recognize this as the iconic footsoldier of the evil Dr. Robotnik from the Saturday morning DiC cartoon and Archie Comics rendition of Sonic the Hedgehog, otherwise known as a "Swatbot".In my own little fanfiction existance of that universe I recognize the initial robots that Julian creates under the guise of Minister of Science for the Acorn Kingdom being as his Mark I automaton. After he stages his coupe and seizes power as Robotnik, he designs an enhanced version of his creation that's been optimized for being his infantry while he seeks his goal of conquering the planet Mobius, the Mark II.
I took the original look of the Swatbot (as illustrated by Spaz from Archie comics) and tried to give it a more realistic, mechanical look.
Enjoy

hurm. you know, the only complaint i had was that they called em "swat bots" shouldnt they be "infantry Bots" or something? they where used for war, the ones in the cities would be "swat" id assume.. it really is one of my favorite designs though, i was looking for refference photos, always love finding more realistic items from the old show (or as far as "realistic" gets when it comes to anthropomorphic creatures and magical machines that turn biologic material into metal)

You know, this is true. Although technically, swat bots are used to suppress and control the civilian population of Mobius, which actually is a function you could assign to a swat unit. This is contradicted however by the point you bring out which is that Robotnik also uses them as his primary military force for everything, hence as infantry. But I think they otherwise do fit the specs for something more security/swat class while the "com-bots" are definitely designed closer to being actual infantry. But again, the problem is com-bots didn't see much usage really. The original subservient bots that got turned aggressive at the coup would be closer to military police or guerrilla soldiers that have to rely on traditional weaponry rather than specialized or integrated systems like their specifically combat oriented descendants do.
In the end, I think Archie or DiC, whoever first designed and coined the name, went with swat bot because they just liked the sound of it.
I'm glad you enjoyed my rendition of this mechanoid! I'm still thinking of revising it further though, along with other badniks. Although lately I've been more concerned with how to accurately render those Robians who are, as you put it, "biological material turned into metal". My current theory is that clothing and fur whould actually be scorched off by the intense electrical currents running through them and the resultant structure would be analyzed and converted to its closest mechanical equivalent, leaving the end result looking closer to an exposed skeleton with muscles and limited epidermal covering if any (likely modifications would be made post roboticization to best equip and protect them for whatever labor Robotnik assigned them to). I just don't see this solidifying garments and fiberous hair into smooth panels of solid colored plate metal being feasible. Whereas the likes of swat bots and related mechs, they're entirely manufactured so it makes sense.
I tend to ramble Thanks for viewing and commenting!

Finally! someone else who shares my passion for over analyzing a children's tv show! (and comic i guess). never got into the comics, they strayed off from the Satam Robonik by comic number ... 90ish?
dono, never followed it closely. i sometimes found the series more focused about his accomplishments then the other characters (Dr. Robotnik is actual my favorite character from the series, way ahead of sonic)...
i try to avoid being one of those "goddamn annoying sonic fans" but eh, the material never got to be fleshed out as much as i hoped it would, nor the show as dark, deep and mature as i was hoping it would be (i often wish to rewrite the series in a more plothole free and logical format, but... that would push me to the obsessive fan spectrum, something i try to avoid).
as far as robotization went, i always assumed the subject was scanned, analyzed by the computer, and the nearest Mechanical equivalent in the database was used, the subject gets converted by a nanobot swarm, creating the parts either on the fly from the matter there, or the spare matter kept within the machine. (fridge logic moment, why not use nanobot swarms to do all his dirty work?) the nanobots have to be kept "powered and controlled" within the machine, cant use them "freehand". the Mobians body is converted and cannot be reversed (assuming we are going for realism ish scenarios). anyway, i usually refuse to read Fanfiction period, esp sonic fanfiction. but i found this gem (mature dark and plothole free) [link] . i never read fics, but this was disturbingly good, almost professional work, anyway on chapter 12 ([link] ) a rather chilling description of how Robotification works is described in detail by the doctor (CNTRL+F : The former Crown Prince Martin to find the related paragraphs, the guy didnt split up his works)

quite an awesome update of the original design, keeps the basics of the SATAM cartoon design while giving it a much deadlier appearance overall.

Joshels In reply to zeiram0034 [2009-07-06 05:31:24 +0000 UTC]
Well, without breaking down into a step-by-step process of how I drew this guy, I'll give ya' the rule I worked with the whole time. Functionality. Every segment of this bot was drawn with a thought to how it'd actually work. Prime example, the elbow joint. The original Swatbot didn't have a visible elbow. I put in an exposed gear which would understandably flex the forearm up and down. This is complimented with ball-bearing joints on either side of that elbow module so it can also rotate it's seperate arm segments in addition to bending in the middle, giving it a full range of motion. Not exactly how we humans manipulate our arms, but an effective mechanical equivilent methinks.
I might make an exploded version of this bot to show the thought I actually put into its parts
The other bit is aesthetics, to make it look both completely mechanical and menacing at the same time.
For the robotic effect, I wanted the MK-II to be more industrial as opposed to futuristic, so all shapes are geometric with mostly sharp angles and flat panels. Very simple actually, just interlocking surfaces. Use as few "organic" shapes as possible; more lines, less curves.
To make it look deadly, really the only tweak I did different than the original was change the visor. The original straight band kept coming out like the bot had a blank expression, just dull whenever I tried drawing it. So I gave it a slight angled V shape, more aggressive. Now it looks pissed, and it wants to kill you.
Hope something in that wall of text can be the least bit helpful I plan on doodling a sheet of alternate swatbot designs in the very near future. Those should be interesting to you if you like the direction this one went in.

Wow, many thanks for the description, that's a very smart approach as far as industrializing the design and making it focus more on function then form.
BTW here's a swatbot design I did a while back been meaning to update it

Wow! Jay, I bet you'd be an awesome rper!!! You have good ideas and an interesting take on the story, not to mention this drawing kicks my butt all over the map as far as bots are concerned!!

Oh I definately have the imagination and material to do some RPing. Except I know and acknowledge those are precisely the reasons I'd be a bad RPer, I'm afraid I'd want to control too much as I fall in love with my own ideas too easily But I'm devoloping a wicked storyline I hope to bring to life in comic form someday soon for folks to enjoy!
I'm delighted you dig my take on the Swat-Bot I think I have a strength in mechanical stuff I haven't flexed nearly enough. Must draw more badniks!

I'm envious of that awesome skill of yours, I can't draw robots no matter how hard I try....
TOo bad about the rps though =/ I'd have offered to do a story line with you, you seem to have some great ideas!

Joshels In reply to bringonthethunder [2009-07-06 05:57:33 +0000 UTC]
Ah! See, you envy something of me right back. Don't get depressed on that, keep trying. What is it about how I drew this bot that makes it work so well to you? Look at the sketch. Dwell on it, disect it and make it do your bidding! That is the way of the art-jedi
Just don't watch too much Transformers, those robots make no sense in their construction o_0 They kick butt though...
I wouldn't count me out for a story collab, I wasn't saying 'absolutely no'. Especially when I get my cast of characters written/drawn out and there's something for you to work with, I'm gonna be more than down for some help with story-lines.
Interchange of creativity is the best, I love it. I just had bad experiences with power-players in RPing in the past, so I don't typically think of it as something I'd do.

Very cool and evil looking while the cartoon versions are just too clunky and bumbling to be any real FF threat.
In my universe Dr R built the swat bots to serve as Mobotropolis premeire civil defense (or so he claimed). In the Wake of the great war gun violence had escalated slightly. try to imagine a race that had never seen a gun before and now suddenly had them thrust into their society.
My Billie warner is commander of the L.A.M.P. (Lost Angeles Millitia Police) they are the only civilian police force in place and only a few of their officers are trained to handle violent offenders. The Royal Acornian Secret Service is mainly a federal agency that rpotects the king and the government. enter the SWAT BOT. An envulnerable specail officer desighned to supress tense situations involveing a widening range of small arms.
originally the bots served to augment Billie's civillian police force but eventually the king had them replaced all together as he sought to remove all weapons and armed forces from the now peaceful kingdom. But on the dawn or Dr R coup they became his evil mechanized army already strategically placed.
You know the rest.

Cool cool. Sounds like we could both sit here and compare our versions of the SatAM universe 'till we're blue in the face But I like how you've thought of things from a political security stand-point, with the civilian police force and Secret Service and all. Mine's a little similar. I'm not gonna bash you with that wall of text now though, maybe if I ever get my comic goin'
I'd love to find out more about your story but I'll be honest and say I'm not much of a fanfic reader unfortunately
Thanks for the comment and fav! Especially the comment as that's precisely what I was getting at, glad it appealed to you so much.

Thats okay I'll be honest and say i havent written much fan fics in the STH timeline
Billie is a cop who eventually dies in the line of duty and comes back as a warrior angel so her lifespan is greatly extended if not indefinite. She is not imortal, she can be killed again in her mortal form.
Anyway what seemed like a spot of bad luck for Billie and her officers turned out to be the saving grace for the resistance. When Billie was decommisioned she returned to the New republic of Texas with many of her most loyal officers and family.
many years later the republic sent her and a hand full of troops to support the princess's rebelion. they were known as the Texas ranger Faction Freedom Fighters and they brought weapons and taught the young Acornians how to fight in true gorilla warfare.
Sally and her FF were reluctant to use guns as was there paradyme taught by their parents. But eventually they accepted the need for firearms (YAY). the Texans also brought tactical hazmat armor and gas masks needed to operate in the densley polutted warzone. all this before texas finally commited to all out war on robotropolis.
But Billie has a tendency not to use her angelic powers. She perfers olfashioned steel, firearms, and raw skill to supernatural abillities.

Well 'ya wrote me one there Decent cliff-notes version though.
Interesting sounding. Like I said before, I like the organizations you've thought up in the wake of Sonic's world. Archie tried spreading into other groups more, but the original show was a little narrow in showing mainly just the Knothole Freedom Fighters battling Dr. R. It's cool to think about what the rest of the planet did IMO.
Again, not gonna bash you with a novel now, but I will say none of my characters have supernatural abilities (not even super-speed). Only a few have fire-arms that they use sparingly, and most are just civilians banding together to try and help others as opposed to actually fighting back.

coonk9 In reply to Joshels [2009-06-24 22:25:14 +0000 UTC]
I'm with you supernatural abillities can be fun sometimes but both billie and i agree that it can beat good old fashioned skill and intelligence and a gun or a sword doesnt hurt.
Billie keeps here powers hidden until ABSOLUTELY neccessary. If anyone called her a superhero she'd probably say "PFT grow up."
She feels theres enough wannabe heroes and supervillians on Mobious already so she's content to play a bit part in leading her small band of Texans in support of the rebellion and provideing princess rebels with the tools and weapons they need to defeat Dr R like EMP Bullets and grenades developed by the Texans.
I havent even yet touched on the alliance the Texans have with many former Autobots and Decepticons who hide in vehichle form so as not to spook the machine fearing Acornians. Only Sally and a few of her most trusted leutenants know of their existance.
Of course Optimus Prime commands the auto-cons while Dr R has allied himself with the Decepti-bots and forced them to become dependent on him for their energon fuel source and maintenannce.
Optimus seeks to unite his people peacfully and free them from the bondage of Dr Rs rule as well as removing the threat to his furry comrades.
Yes i just saw the new TF movie but i had decided this after the first one so HAH
