Description
DATE: 02/05/17 TIME: 2 PM LOCATION: Tōno, Japan
ID: 301 STATEMENT: 345
We were called out to investigate a sighting of a Kappa near Tōno when a video was uploaded on a streaming site. Our online digital masking team was quick to take the video down but we wanted to get out to the location as quickly as possible before the story spread.
Kappa have been known to hibernate for extended periods of time, the longest being recorded at 114 years, and have extended lifespans that can span centuries.
Upon arrival, we met with our Japanese division and made our way to the property where the video was uploaded.
We were greeted by an elderly woman named Ama Fujiki, who was present until we mentioned the Kappa, at which she became incredibly defensive. Eventually, she admitted to having been feeding it a mixture of cucumbers and cat food for the last few months. She told us it appeared after some heavy rains in the area made a small river at the end of her garden burst its banks. A few days later it appeared. She admitted it was her grandson who had uploaded the video and we were forced to confiscate many of the electronic items on the property.
We believe that the Kappa was hibernating within the river banks and was disturbed when the water eroded the soil.
She showed us to the river and we were quick to locate the creature. It was a ‘Lesser-Brown Kappa’, a generally non-aggressive species and shy away from humans for the most part, however, they have been known to mistake children as threats and drown them.

ASSET ANALYSIS: Lesser-Brown Kappa
THREAT LEVEL: 2 (DEFENSIVE)
Kappa are amphibious creatures native to Japan. There are a number of species, the largest and most dangerous is the Kawatora (川虎, river-tiger) or The Striped Blue.
The ‘bowl’ on their heads helps them stay hydrated on land, allowing them to go further in search of food. The larger a male Kappa bowl is, the more desirable he is to females as he is more likely to be able to bring food back to the nest.
Kappas also have a strong toxin in their skin that can be used as an undetectable poison that causes instantaneous liver failure which led to them being ruthlessly hunted in times of war.

Very cool. A kind of simian chelonian. Do these ones reflexively bow, spilling their ‘bowl’ like the legends too?
