It was a cold crisp day in February when I traveled to the Pokemon Academy to give a lecture on Pokemon Biodiversity. One of my favorite sections was the Tajari Library. It was a huge building with millions of books dedicated to the history and study of Pokemon.

For nostalgia's sake, I decided to go for a visit before my class. Walking in, the musty smell filled me with memories. I made my way up the brass spiral staircases to the second floor. I was looking for something special. Something I had hidden away a long, long time ago.

I came to an extremely tall bookshelf. I pulled the rail ladder along and lined it up with the correct row. I climbed up the steps until I reached the very highest shelf. I grabbed a large red leather book and carefully flicked to the last page.

There is was, perfectly preserved, just as I had left it.

I shifted my weight but suddenly lost my footing. I slipped and fell backward. With a jolt, I hit something, but it didn’t feel like carpet or varnished wood. It was cool and felt very strange, even now it’s hard to describe. All of a sudden the structure beneath me vanished and I fell to the floor with a thud!

Bewildered, I stood up and looked around. That's when I saw it. Peering out from behind one of the large bookshelves was a Mr.Mime! It suddenly turned and waddled in the opposite direction. Following it, I turned the corner to see it awkwardly shuffling down the hallway. It peered back cautiously, saw me, jumped a little from shock, and sped up. Suddenly, it turned Invisible! I had read of Mr.Mime doing a number of amazing things but invisibility was never one of them. I turned yet another corner, almost bump the Librarian, Cornelius Weatherington.

He was an old man in his late 80’s with silver hair, large glasses, and a brown waistcoat. He had walked these halls since before I was in my first year.

Smiling, he greeted me like an old friend, calling me by my first name. Before I could even ask he mentioned that I was probably looking for Popcorn. As you can imagine I was rather confused but he simply smiled and turned ago look down at the floor behind him.

“Come now Popcorn, say hello, don’t be shy” he whispered in a comforting tone. Slowly, the Mr.Mime reappeared, cowering behind him.

Cornelius explained that he found Popcorn when he was a little Mime.Jr.

Ever since Popcorn has helped take care of the Library, eventually evolving into a Mr.Mime.

I surmised that Popcorn had developed a way to use its barriers to bend the light around itself, making it appear almost invisible.

We walked out into the main section of the Library where Popcorn immediately got to work. Like glittering shards of glass, the psychic walls floated around it like some extra-dimensional fracture. They then floated to their feet, allowing Popcorn to walk up a set of invisible stairs. It then turned and stepped onto a larger ‘plane’ that floated it up to the next level.

I suddenly realized the time and apologized as I had to get to my class. Gathering my things,

I went to leave, however, I felt something tug on my coat. I turned around to see Popcorn looking up at me. He held something in his hand. I had almost forgotten.

Taking it I looked down at the photograph I had stashed away in that book all those years ago. It was a picture of me and a dear friend of mine on the last day of school. At the bottom was a note written in pen.

‘On to the next adventure, forever and always, your friend, Delia’.

Mr.Mime unsurprisingly was a real challenge! It's hard to make something like this feel not only realistic but not 'nightmare fuel'. I'm sure it'll still creep some of you out but personally, I think its kind of cute
