Machop are interesting creatures. Their species is quite unique, also being known as the 'Reptilian ape'. They are actually more closely related to dinosauria rather than reptiles or apes, they are simply named this because of their looks. Having long and very powerful arms compared to the rest of their bodies you can often see them running like apes.

Machop were selectively bred to gain muscle by fighting pokemon trainers. Over the many years their arms have become bigger and gain more muscle mass, while their legs have become stockier.
Machop are especially skilled at wrestling like moves and can often be seen fighting like this in pokemon gyms. As they are selectively bred it is rare to see these pokemon in the wild, however it is not unheard of as there have been reports of small colonies surviving in rocky areas after being released and started to breed.

Once the crests on its head were used by its ancestors as aggressive displays when fighting for territory, however now they have little use.
