Description
Dragonite, some of the rarest pokemon of all. Once thought to be legendary until the successful training of Dragonair began in captivity.Dragonite are strange creatures, they are what's called 'mimic' animals. A creature which mimics another for defense or aggression to ward of potential threats. They almost completely change from their previous form. It is seen that they naturally mimic Charizard's, their bodies changing, growing limbs, changing colour as a defense against many larger ocean threats such as Gyarados. It tricks the predators into thinking they are more dangerous than they are. However this has puzzled scientists for some time as they are more than capable of protecting themselves.
These changes have come as a great advantage to the Dragonite. It allows them to travel far more easily on land as their newly grown limbs can easily hold their weight.
Though they are capable on land their strength lies in the water as they use their wings as flippers to power their way through the water at tremendous speeds making hunting fish and other marine animals a breeze.
Their wings don't just help them in the water, they also give them the power of flight.
Scientists pondered over their arial abilities for a long time as technically due to the animals size, compared to their wings they shouldn't be able to fly at all. The secret was not found in the way they fly but what goes on inside. Like fire types 'dragon pokemon' can extract hydrogen from the air, however instead of igniting and expelling the hydrogen like fire types, they store it in large 'bladders' in their chest. These pockets are even bigger than their lungs and can store and pressurize a huge amount of gas very quickly. This decreases their body weight by 32% and allows them to fly. Technically they cannot provide self powered flight but glide using cliffs to take off and then riding air currents, similar to Charizard's.
The horn on their head still acts as a weapon when battling for a mate, but unlike Dragonair's exposed horn, the skin has healed over it similar again to Charizard's back facing horns.
The fins that were once perched upon its head have turned into long 'whisker' like tendrils. Though they have no useful function they are believed to aid in acquiring a mate. It is thought that they use them in some form of alluring dance, however only a few people have said to have seen this 'dance of the dragons'.
Though they are mammals they do not give birth to live young, and lay their eggs in sea caves deep in sandy pools. They leave them until they hatch. Dratini have unique songs which their parents will hear from miles away to return to feed them. When they are strong, many dratini from around that area will gather together and swim upstream to warmer waters inland until they are ready to evolve and start the cycle again.
They live mainly in the ocean or near ocean cliffs. Its said they are attracted by lighthouses beams as a few times Dragonite have been seen near them.
Like their prevo they have beautiful songs that can travel for miles, however they only sing when they are either ready to mate or completely content. Only a few captive dragons have sung, one of the most famous is the world famous dragon trainer Lance, who's Dragonite's songs have earnt him a small fortune.
Hope you like it

Absolutely beautiful.
If Dragonite actually looked like that, I would so want one.
The real one looks soooooo doofy. XD
Is the Dragonite's means of flight some kind of reference to the story "Flight of Dragons"?

I believe it's a book, but when I saw it, it was a movie.
In Flight of Dragons, the way the dragons achieve flight is that they eat a whole bunch of limestone, which causes a chemical reaction in their bellies that fills up some organ that makes them lighter than air.
Then when they want to come down, they release the gas from this organ and out through their mouths, which comes out as fire.
Kinda similar to what you have here for Dragonites, but without the limestone and not enough to really lift them.

lol, Well they don't hold their breath. It's a separate organ from their lungs.
They can still talk and breathe and stuff while they're flying.
I think in the movie they called it a "fire sac" or something like that. Cuz when the gas comes out it becomes fire.
But yeah, they float like balloons and they use their wings to direct them in the air.

Oh wow I just realized this! I tried to figure out why Dragonite couldn't fly.. you said Dratini + evos were mammals. Mammals (except bats) don't fly... but they can glide! I get it now! XD

And the mystery of why Charizard and Dragonite look so similar is solved . Did not see that coming but it was a very good take on how something like Dragonair becomes something like Dragonite. The real question is why would a Gyarados be afraid of a Charizard?
Also, interesting note about Lance there.

What I'd like to know is why butterfree and venonat look near identical. Though I guess insect mimicry is much more common than mammal mimicry.

RenDragonClaw In reply to Octoboy-the-8th [2010-02-14 07:53:30 +0000 UTC]
I imagine it's because the original designs were similar. They technically are in the same genus perhaps. Moths and Butterflies being somewhat related somewhere. It's possible that Butterfrees look similar to Venonats to give an indication that they may be just as venomous and thus less appetizing of a meal ala the mimicry you mentioned.

I can tell you that it would be a pretty popular deviation if you drew that. Think of it as a sort of 'slice of life' for Pokemon Evo.
