Description Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]

A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.

A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!

Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.

As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and to all of you!

Hey, thanks a lot for making this great tutorial. I do have some questions though. When I draw a path with the pen tool, and then right click on it, I don't get the option "stroke subpath". I do get the option "stroke path", but it's in grey, and I can't click on it. Before, I thought that you could only do that in CS 2, and I had CS. But now I do have CS 2, and I still can't do it. Am I doing something wrong?

Okay, question. When I want to draw with the pen tool in photoshop, first of all, I get a filling color. How do I remove that? Second, when I rightclick on the path, I only get two options: shape 1 and background. How do I get to the stroke subpath option?

This was very informative and helpful, thank you very much.
The progam you used was Photoshop, right? Do you have any other softwares that work well for coloring/sading, etc??
You are really good at making these, I've read each of the tutorials you made and when I get a tablet and software I'll definately use them ^-^

I was hoping I could ask your help on some troubleshooting? I opened up Photoshop and this tutorial both to try and digital ink something with the pen tool. I clicked and made the two anchor dots, curve it if its not a straight line, but when I right click on the line, the "stroke subpath" option is grayed out and I can't click it. Am I missing a step?
Sorry, but you're the only one I know if so far that can use the pen tool!

Hello there, great tutorial. Inspired me much to try to learn about tracing.

Question: what version of Photoshop do you use? The version I'm using gives me a color background "around" the traced lines. Its really weird and I don't know how to configure it not to do so : T

Thank you for making this! I especially liked the pen part. I always disliked drawing with the pen, because the pressure looks the same everywhere. But now I see you can do it differently, and the result is gorgeous! I'm so gonna try that!

I just wanted to thank you sooo sooo much for making this tutorial, I can't even tell you how much it has helped me. Just one thing, the commands are different on a mac, so maybe put in that warning, since I had to experiment a little to figure out which buttons did what for example, on the mac you need to press control for the right click effect and the apple button to move points.

Thank you soooo much for all of your tutorials. They helped me out a lot. But what makes me mad is that I have photoshop5.0 and i cant find the original version. No one has tutorials for 5.0 and its a little different than the original. But urs were a lot more helpfull than most other tutorials!

Perfect! Thanks a lot, this is just what I was looking for ^.^. But, I have one problem. I used your paths method, and I did get the boring normal lines, the ones that don't get thinner around the ends. Yes, I did check the box that said "Simulate Pressure." I was thinking it was probably because you had different brush presets. Also mine weren't thick. My lines were semi-soft, just not completely hard. It doesn't matter though, it fit with what I was doing. But I just wanted to know if you did anything extra or if you could help me for a future reference. Thanks in advance, and thanks for the tutorial.
