Description
Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.
A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!
Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.
As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and

this is an excacllent tutroial. I love how you explain everything, even things that may (for much more photoshop savy people) be obvious, but isn't for a beginner in digital work! I also really like how you give tips like turning the sketch lines cyan. I give you two thumbs up!This was amazing!

I'm glad someone addressed the problem that all humans have - a wrist with imperfect steadiness, even with a tablet! I use a Wacom Graphire4, but yet I always feel that my lines are horribly shaky. I like that you've provided at least 3 ways to ink. I think I'll take a look back at this the next time I want to try a new style.
Awesome tutorial!

Nice tutorial. I don't know if you'll be able to help, but I have a problem with using the pen technique in PS. I have CS3, and every time I try to use the pen on a curved line, instead of a line, I get a nice little half-moon shape. It's not exactly what I want. Do you know how to fix that?

This is very helpful.
I am curious about using the pen tool on photoshop to finish your lineart.
I am having a bit of trouble using this method. When I use the pen tool to create the curves, the area is filled with a color instead of creating a line. I am wondering how I can remedy this problem. Also. I cannot seem to select the Stroke Path option while clicking right on the mouse. I see the option, but it is grayed out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just out of curiosity which method of inking do you prefer?
I'm pondering about the Flash method but I don't think it will create the same results to Inking like Method 1 of your Tutorial. I spend a lot or time and patients cleaning up my lines in PhotoShop, I'd like something quicker but would prefer more Vector Based Lines but I can't get that. Might give Flash a go. Anyway thanks for the Tutorial.

I have a question! D:
How do you make the sketch onto a new layer? D: Like..
I scanned a picture, it's on the background layer which is always locked. I've trying Layer Cutting but then I can't color in the next layers ;o;~

um...i was wondering...
for the pen tool, what options should i set it on?
you know the little icons at the top, i think i played with it before and now it won't go back to it's original settings,
like right now it's filling in a shape as i go.
and i don't know whether to click the pen icon with the dotted line or the icon without the dotted line (at the top)
please and thanks!

Thank you very much for this tutorial! Though I have a question, When using the pen tool to create a stroke path, do want to close the shape?(For the convenience of coloring?)One more thing ,I was wondering what brush settings and size did you use to create the second sample under the pen tool?
