Description
Of all the fan artworks I've seen, no one has given any attention to the Death Star like thing at the upper corner of the official Force Awakens poster. Then I found out that the Starkiller base, is actually a weaponized, planet, with a destructive power that outmatches its predecessor Death Stars, and probably much larger too.So no longer would you need to squint your eyes on the poster to see its details. Here it is in all its glory.

Thing still got the same cooldown problem the old Death Stars got. Couldn't they have recharged their weapon sooner? Like, immediately after first launch, sooner?

Color me a nitpicker, but when it turned out to basically be the Deathstar 3.0, I found myself thinking "It didn't work twice already-what was making it bigger supposed to accomplish???"

Yep. That thing's pretty much a painted target. Think sometimes, versatile weapons are more effective than large-sized ones.
I played the Norfolk Naval Base level on Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, and that base defences gave me much more of a fright than this laser.

Not just that. What happens if the rebels' bases were stationed on another side of their galaxy, or become mobilized flotillas? How long do you reckon it would take for them to even turn this thing?

That was actually one of my first thoughts when I saw the movie. If the Death Star already didn't work twice, what difference did they think making it bigger would make-especially since they leaf the same exact freaking vulnerability on it?

I think it actually was designed by the same guys.
There is no way the First Order, with far less industrial capacity than the Empire, could pull off an engineering feat many times bigger than the Death Star by themselves and get it finished by the time of the movie.
I think Starkiller Base was originally an Imperial project, being built alongside the Death Stars, but the First Order took over and finished the project after the Empire's defeat.
That could explain why Starkiller has the Imperial "hit this spot here" signature while the rest of the First Order's designs are more practical.

Pretty sure the First Order is actually a far more massive faction than what we see in the film. They have an armistice treaty with the New Galactic Republic.

Hi again. Good idea; maybe it's the next step after both DS that got cancelled with the Empire's defeat at Endor. It's the type of weapon Palpatine would have liked to have.
EU material, by the way, suggests the First Order has entire fleets prepared to strike the New Republic, that the latter scrapped most of its fleet to center on rebuilding planets, etc., and that those ships destroyed along the New Republic's capital were the bulk of the remaning warships -at least that's what I saw at Wookieepedia and elsewhere-.

Oh, I hope the New Republic didn't scrap the majority of their fleet, otherwise, we're gonna get another story were the Empire shits on whoever they want, the Republic is gonna get screwed!!! I was under the impression that those few ships we saw we're just a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of their fleet.

And yes, Starkiller base is probably the most powerful weapon in the (canon) Star Wars universe. (Legends has some more powerful stuff, but Legends isnt canon anymore so it doesn't count).
Starkiller Base is no joke. It hurls energy and plasma through hyperspace at relativistic speeds (as in, it forces the "beam" into hyperspace!) Because of this brute force it also causes a rip and distortion in spacetime casting a shadow into realspace. The movie crew actually stated this as an explanation as to why they were able to see Hosnian Prime's destruction lightyears away at the moment it happened, turns out they were not seeing the destruction itself but rather the hyperspace shadow from it's effects on spacetime.
So yeah, not only does it eat stars and kill many planets from light years away, it also pretty much screws with relativity (distorting the fabric of spacetime itself) as a side-effect.
