Well this is really the 6th portrait of young Carol, but its deffintaly the most like her, at least in my opinion.
The format and colour of the backround is inspired the old chinese silk scrolls, as a nod to her backround, where as the handling of the figure is very western and modern, which sums her up quite nicely.
I've been working on this thing for the last 3 weeks, been giving me hell but at last is done. Enjoy

This is absolutely beautiful, you have captured the impression of flesh with such realism! And the extreme realism is nicely balanced by the soft white background - slightly ambigous - is it a sheet, or wings?

oh wow, thats an accomplishment! Out of curiosity, how do you feel about parting with your paintings? I know a lot of artists are have very strong bonds to their works, and refuse to sell - but others do the opposite! I'd love to hear what you think

at one point I was making a full time living between painting and performing, and when you have to pay the bills that way you take any sale you can get, there's been a few I didn't really want to part with but in some ways, a painting is really only finished once it's sold. That's the point at which it's no longer your problem I guess..
Need to put my pieces back together and start active chasing sales/gigs again one of these days

Its always disheartening to think of all the emotion you put into a piece, along with the hours worked, and all the hours studying art itself, and the timlessness of it - when someone can work at a general store for a few hours and receive the same amount of money for a commission as doing menial work. I suppose thinking of it as 'finished' is an interesting perspective - although I can't imagine any of your work not meeting a 'finished look'! Its great to hear back from such a talented artist, all the best with that chase

You have a really good technique. I love how this remains realistic, without compromising its painterly qualities. Excellent composition, and really sensitively done.
I came here through 's favourites, so am off to check out the rest of your gallery

oh! my! amazing! look at the details on the hand! >.< I just love this one. The composition and also the overall oriental mode. fav fav!!
hei, You paint them live or from the picture? I'm asking cause I've always been painting from pictures except for some still life painting and I've been invited to join a live nude painting but no matter how much I wanna to join I rejected it as I took freaking long time to finish a painting and I have no idea on how does thing works when painting live nude.

Thank you. That hand nearly killed me. I'm of the opinion this is my best work so far, hopefully can bounce back to this standard again soon.
I work from photos, because it takes me to long to finish
I do a lot of live drawing though, work in pastles on paper, and just use it as practice, its really good for your eye, and you might get one good one out of a night. They have a very different feel though I guess you are not looking for the highly finished look, but something with engery in it.
That;s what my take on it anyways

>.< I paint from photo too. It also took me a long time to finish a painting.. not that it really have to take that long but it just that I can't sit there and keep doing it non stop or i'll ended up spoiling it. I usually have to take some break (more time is spend on the break then the painting ).
yeah I agree, painting live is a total diff. thing.

Are you happy with how she turned out? I think it's your best Carol yet! Her hands are so very expressive and graceful. Her features are so lovingly crafted, and that little hint of a smile is great. This painting almost seems to touch the secrets hidden in a woman's smile. Delightful!

It is, sadly the I spend so long on a painting (90 hours in this case) Getting models to stay still that long isn't practical at this point in my life, when I'm rolling in cash I will work only from life.
At this stage all I can afford is to get them for a 3 or 4 hour photo shoot with myself and Karen, which I guess isn't too bad

This is rather brilliantly painted, wouldn't you say?
And I'm so glad you out up that image of yours in scraps- showing the proportions- it really gives such a better perspective of what we are seeing.

It does seem to have helped a lot of peoples view of my work putting that photo up...should have done it sooner

Yes Congrats my friendly!!!
I'm very proud of you, you've done brilliantly this year- and in such a small time frame.
Actually, I think you and I must have both started painting "seriously" about the same time. I started about 2-2.5 years ago.
Though we've gone down different stylistic paths, I still admire your work so much and relate to the feeling and energy you put in- it's your calling, and mine too!

ahh ok I feel I should have known you started at the same time as me....however I didn't til just then.
Cool good to see someone else as new to it as me also starting to make inroads..its been a bit scary since all the people I kinda hang out with and talk to art about/show my work beside have been painting for like, 20 years or sometimes a lot more....I allways feel like I should suck or something...
I hopefully will have my new thing oneline soon, its driving me nuts, not even sure if I like it at all anymore, but I get that way quite often towards the end of a paitning, so I need to give myself time to get over the effort of it before I could tell you if I like it or not..

bravo!!! is it just me or is this a big jump ahead for you? and it is not like i feel like you had anywhere much to jump to, but there is an attention what is going on here like never before... what ever was giving you troubles seems to have been worked out. well done, the hands are right on... and the skin is about as fleshy as you can get...but those eyes look right through you.

thank you for saying so, the way I guess it works is I get to a certain point, and stay there till it becomes easy (I really didn't struggle that hard with my last few at all honestly) so then I pull out all the stops just to see what I can do, then of course I'm committed to trying to do stuff that good all the time...agh!
Contest winners for the next 3 paintings, so that will be interesting

no problem...it is certainly interesting to see how we progress. and how we get to point and just do stuff and then one day, we whoosh off to another place or a new level... almost inspite of ourselves... it is good to be committed to such excellence...
are you saying your last 3 paintings have won contests?
