Description
Pastel on Board. 89cmX 56cm.Part of my ongoing attempts at crossover between japanese woodcuts and western art.
finished, I'm still a bit confused about it.
Better photo but maybe a tad to cold now...anyone know how to embed the color from a raw photo into a websize jpg?
DA always makes things cooler/flatter when I upload them.

thanks. I need to do something with this some day...it's unframed in a cardboard box at the moment...and has been since it was finished.
Seems a shame

I like your work very much, this is missing your usual elegance, which gives it that crossover. as a painting it stands up well but not in the same class as "blue velvet" which so beautifully mixes french classical with japanese space.sorry if this is harsh ,sent with kindness

Thanks for the feedback, don't worry I'm big boy I can take an honest critique.
I can see your point, from my point of view it is leaning more to the japanese in the sense it more linear and less sculpted then the bulk of my other work.
It also didn't photograph very well which doesn't change the composition obviously, but it has lost the warm glow which is my fav thing about it.
As with anything one does that is new it splits the crowd (quite a number of people swear its my best effort), but I will add I've felt very lost this year, however by experimenting with things like this and the mountainscape, I've learnt a whole bunch of new tricks that will hopefully help me move foward.
thanks again

it is difficult when one is pushing personal boundaries and the final judgment is yours. one of the good things about DA is some of us have been there too and can sympathise and support hopefully.you do have a huge amount of talent and i look forward to your next pieces

Beautifully rendered and hypnotic. I finally pinpointed what was bothering me about her eyes though - left eye iris diameter is larger than right eye's. Maybe that is the way she is built, but ?

The painting itself I really like, as usual, but I kind of think you should've painted from further back because the close range of her face is kind of distracting from the whole of it for me.
great color and brush strokes as always.

I think the eyes really make this piece, they invite you in hypnotically.

Beautiful work, the hair and eyes especially are amazing.
Interested by the Japanese woodcut crossover, what is it about them that inspires you? The hair / composition gives it that feel for me.
I also like this because it's natural, she's leaning on her hand and it's distorting her face a little, as it would, and that brings a lot of realism to the piece but also weight and emotion
