heh, a bit confused on the question. You want to fade the pattern, or a gradient? Something like that?

Okay, so the way I do that goes something like this. Place the tone over an area in its separate layer. Then, in the layers pallette, next to the "Lock:" option is the square thing that says "lock transparent cells" or something. Click that.
Then click on your gradient tool, hidden under the paint bucket in the tools menu. At the top of the screen you'll see your gradient options. It'll say "Mode: Normal".If you're fading the gradient into white then keep it at normal. If you're fading the gradient into a darker shade, then select "Mode: Multiply". This will pretty much make sure you cans till see the tone dots through the dark gradient. Also in that top window, make sure you've selected the gradient that merges into a transparent area, and not your selected bg colour. That way, you'll be layering the gradient over the tone.
Wow..that all sounds really confusing. I'll make a more in depth tutorial for toning shortly I think. : )
