Description A lot of people ask me how I paint my paintings and collaborations, so I decided to finally make tutorials explaining the steps I take to get to the results you can see in my gallery.

Here's part 1, which shows how to get the shapes down easily.
In Part 2 I will explain how to lay down the colors, and in Part 3 I will further explain how to polish and detail the picture.

This technique is actually a variation of really old traditional oilpainting-technique called grisaille, aka greyscale. It's a very useful technique which helps separate the painting-process into more easily controllable steps.

I know I personally can get carried away by all the lovely colors of the world and my painting turns out to be a complete mess unless I think about the shapes first, as a separate step! Then comes the colors, then comes the detailing and polishing.

I'm sorry about certain inconsistency with the screencaps and whatnot, I painted the painting in another city with a mac and then came home and changed to my PC, I used two different versions of photoshop, etc. So getting this together was a bit messy. Hopefully you peeps can still understand something of it! @_@

I'll post it to this same category within a week if all goes as planned, so I'm sure you'll find it from there.

what program did you use for this? is it possible to do this on Gimp?

I painted this in Photoshop CS4. I haven't used Gimp but I would assume that all of this is possible to do in Gimp too.

I love tutorials like this.

Step 1: Here's a sketch

Step 2: Here's everything else

Well, that's how it goes really.
Lineart, add flat base, then just toss light and shadow to it.

If I explained how to think about the line-art picture in three dimensions, as in how to decide the lightsource, how it reflects around, how it behaves on different shaped surfaces etc, this tutorial would be like... ten times longer. So I can only show how I do it as far as technique goes.

I have seen many photoshop tutorials. Yours ,by far, has been the easiest, simplest, and most useful to me in terms of grey scaling-overlay (esp. lowering the opacity of the lineart).
I look foward to your coloring tutorial, please also share the brush settings you use, or even upload the brushes. Thank you.

Thank you! I was worried this might seem a little too simple, but then I decided that the info is most important and I won't delay publishing this just for the sake of decoration...
I'll probably add info about the brush I use, I pretty much use just one brush though and it's a photoshop standard brush if I remember correctly.

Not at all. You've done a great job. It's probably your technique then. I know very little about painting brushing in Ps. I mainly migrated to SAI the first chance I got my hand s on a tablet. Anyways, I'm definitely looking forward to the next tutorial. Thank you, once again.

Thanks! And I'm probably gonna give a new try to SAI at some point, I switched back to PC just a week ago so now I can actually install it lol.

I look forward to it. Shading/Painting is something I'm experimenting with, so this kind of stuff is invaluable.
