Description
EDIT! HEY ALL! Since I posted this tutorial, I have changed by technique a bit! I have realized that it's better to use SOFT LIGHT-layer style for the color-layers instead of overlay! Overlay can be too strong and garish, using soft light layers and making many of those can give a much softer result! Sorry for the inconvenience, I'll be making a new tutorial sometime that explains the soft light layers!
Here's tutorial 2/3!
I hope I was able to explain how I add the colors. And if you need clarification on some part, don't hesitate to ask!
I will try to finish part 3 soon, where I will show how I start to actually paint over this base I've created.
I used Photoshop CS4 with Wacom Intuos3 for this.
The brush is Photoshop's standard hard round brush.
The lineart was provided by MeganeRid , go see his gallery for awesome drawings!

Perfect! What is the configuration of the brush for the lineart that you use?

And this is such a relaxing painting-technique 'cause you only have to worry about one thing at the time!

this is somehow a start -talking about techniques- and it works very well (well at least we have this first impression, without working on it...)
I've absolutely no experience in digital drawing (just bought me a bamboo wacom last month ) and at last I found something clear and effective to start with. A really well made tuto...I will maybe ask questions once I will try your techniques.
THANKS

Ah, thanks! I noticed that I'm not so good at adding bells and whistles to the layout, so I just kept it simple!

Aww, no problem. It's really true, you are an very talented artist. I added you to my watchlist.
Please tell me, how long do you take for a pic like this? :3

Hmm, I think this one took me about 8-9 hours to paint, but I'm not the one who did the linearts for this. If I did the linearts too, it would take me approximately 2-3 hours more I think.
And thanks for the watch!

Yeah, I occasionally go through other artist's tutorials and walkthroughs 'cause you never know what technique you could spot! And sometimes I'll remember some technique I've seen earlier but haven't tried yet, and suddenly find use to it! An artist always has more to learn!

You're welcome! Part 3 is my favorite love/hate step of painting.
It can be so time-consuming and so annoying and so enjoyable at the same time haha!
But it's a step that can also be skipped if so desired, just by making the original greyscale neat. I like a painterly, blocky style so for me the third step is essential though.

I have really enjoyed going through the first two tutorials. Your greyscale is nice and tight to start with and the layers build up with a very "rich" feel to them.
I know I need to study colour theory at some point to really get more out of a set of good tutorials like this.
I really like your style which is why I thought going through these tutes step by step would be a good learning experience and so far it has been.

Awesome, great to hear that!
Color-theory is great thing to know about, but of course you can make things easier at the beginning by color-picking from a picture/photo/whatever seems aesthetically pleasing to you. I know I sometimes almost get lost in the world of colors because with digital painting you can pick any color imaginable! There's just too many to choose from.
There are also some great color-swatches that can be installed to photoshop and are easier to pick from in my opinion... somehow it just makes things clearer lol, dunno why.
Let me know how it goes and ask further questions is the need arises!
