Description

EDIT! HEY ALL! Since I posted this tutorial, I have changed by technique a bit! I have realized that it's better to use SOFT LIGHT-layer style for the color-layers instead of overlay! Overlay can be too strong and garish, using soft light layers and making many of those can give a much softer result! Sorry for the inconvenience, I'll be making a new tutorial sometime that explains the soft light layers!

Here's tutorial 2/3!
I hope I was able to explain how I add the colors. And if you need clarification on some part, don't hesitate to ask!

I will try to finish part 3 soon, where I will show how I start to actually paint over this base I've created.

I used Photoshop CS4 with Wacom Intuos3 for this.

The brush is Photoshop's standard hard round brush.

The lineart was provided by MeganeRid , go see his gallery for awesome drawings!

I kinda gave up on digital drawing a long time ago, since I never really liked ANYTHING I drew on the computer... but now looking at these methods, I kinda want to have another go

BLESS THESE TUT SERIES. I personally really like digital painting but I cannot stand seeing the colors get mixed up or using a bunch of layers so this method is pretty much perfect!

It's much better doing it this way but..
When I add my colors, the shadows are still extremly balack/grey
( I used that style before but now I don't know the problem o.o)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to Dissidius [2013-03-25 08:29:41 +0000 UTC]

HMM. The shadows should also become colorful when overpainting them in overlay... you could try to paint on top of them with a slightly lighter color, that'll lighten the grey areas underneath. Let me know if that solves the problem!

Dissidius In reply to juuhanna [2013-03-26 18:29:04 +0000 UTC]

sadly it doesen't solve the problem ):
But I'll keep working!
Thank you anyways!! <3

Hey hey, first of all thanks again for making this tutorial. It's always good when other artists share their knowledge. And I was wondering when you think the third part will be done? I know you are busy and have other things I was just curious cause I'm actually trying this technique right now. Thanks again!

juuhanna In reply to NekoThunder [2013-03-11 12:03:38 +0000 UTC]

Aaaah sorry sorry! D: I have all the visual materials since forever, I just need to figure out how to actually explain the technique in a useful and understandable way... I'll try to get it done asap! ;o; (this week, I hope, but no promises).

Nice job and great tutorials. I do admire the fact you can work black and white first. Personally it drives me crazy. I feel I work best going straight into color and letting it mix into the values needed.

juuhanna In reply to AnneHijme [2013-01-28 12:01:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I used to start painting without greyscale but it proved to be problematic at times, so I feel like it's better for me to take the extra step to make greyscale rather than just paint directly. But then again everyone has different method that works for them so my way definitely isn't the only way.

AnneHijme In reply to juuhanna [2013-02-19 18:41:57 +0000 UTC]

No it isn't, but a lot of great artist do so (paint in grey scale first).

I just love color too much, lol.

^ o ^

EdgeKagami In reply to ??? [2013-01-02 08:47:40 +0000 UTC]

Nice tutorial! Sometimes I struggle to keep my picture from having too many layers (large file size), and I don't know if I should use 'Overlay' or 'Multiply' mode. I'm still experimenting to see what works.

I get the case where the lineart looks nice, but my colouring kills the picture.
Do you have advice for color of the lines for lineart against colour?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to EdgeKagami [2013-01-06 11:36:14 +0000 UTC]

The difference between multiply and overlay is that multiply is transparent and darkens itself and whatever is below, whereas overlay is transparent and lightens itself and whatever is below. I hope that clarifies the difference.
But experimenting is definitely the best way to figure out what works the best for you!

I'm not sure if I understood your last question?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EdgeKagami In reply to juuhanna [2013-01-15 00:16:10 +0000 UTC]

I think that's ok, I'm experimenting. Thanks!

Thanks! I'll make third tutorial where I explain how I clean up the image after this stage, and I've been thinking of making few small extra tutorials like how to paint golden decorations etc... no promises though, I'm busy with commissions right now. But I'll try to get something done nonetheless.

juuhanna In reply to valkyrie1858 [2012-12-27 08:24:07 +0000 UTC]

I use Photoshop CS4, and I got it from a store! (Well, my boyfriend did, but anyway)
But you can download a trial from Adobe's website and also you can use this method with other programs too I'm sure! I have Painter 12 as well but I haven't been using it much recently since my previous computer was too old to run it... now I should try and see if this technique works with that program too, and what would be the ideal brush.
