Description
Character is Fen, who belongs to ! <3 Fen is her wonderful character from the audiobook, Alstrat's Journal:[link]
This is just a rough walkthough (meaning: "subpar presentation"), not really a full tutorial. There's tons of explanation I left out. Feel free to ask about anything. I know especially towards the end, there's a big jump. And that background just.. appeared. HAHA. Also, I recommend inking your image before colouring it. I changed my mind part way through as to how I was going to approach the colouring, which is why inking doesn't appear until a chunk of the way in. I also recommend you do the background right after you block in the flat colours, especially if you have trouble choosing colour palettes.
Out of curiosity, would anybody want to see a full colouring tutorial? If so, what would you like me to go over? Colour palette selection? Blending? How to do a specific feature like eyes or hair? Background? Skin? "Finishing" an image? Next time, I will actually take appropriate closeups and make more frequent screenshots.
I'm afraid I can't do an OC walkthrough of my shiny pattern style- I recently bought the newest version (because I couldn't get the older one) of OC, so I'm still figuring it out. xD
Adobe Photoshop CS3 all the way!
Note: I use a different method to colour comics, and another method for my OC/PS hybrid colouring.

This was great! It's got so many incredibly helpful bits of information, especially the tips on colour choices for the skin and the blending and shading thereof. Thank you very much!

*is envious* You have skills. That's pretty much all there is to it.
But if you're doing a tutorial, background, skin or blending would be useful

Quite interesting. Despite this not being a full tutorial, I'm sure it helps me with my art. :3
Tutorials I'm interested in:
- Backgrounds
- Finishing images up
- Shadows and light on different textures (metal, skin, hair, cloth, etc.)

So do you draw the background in a separate layer or is it a completely separate image? I note that in the layer for it that there is a chunk that looks empty around his head, so I was just wondering if it was pasted into a back layer later.
I think I'll need to search out Adobe again (maybe a legit copy this time >.>. GIMP on windows seems to lack something, though maybe I need to goof around with settings more (it no longer knows what to do with my tech pad, might need to see if they've updated or are just panning it for the Windows release. Would like it to be more than just a finer mouse!).

I draw the background on a separate layer- I left the empty chunk because I knew it would be covered by Fen, so there was not too much use in working in too much. xD

Oh my gosh, this is wonderful, thank you!
I don't have any specific questions regarding this at this moment because I'm not drawing yet, but if you do a coloring tutorial.. Some things I'm dying to know how to do would be how to color noses, lips, and eyes. I was staring sooo hard at eat step and wondering how you did that. XD Maybe a little blending, too! Though the little bit of that here helped lots as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep them in mind! Especially for blending, that was always a mystery to me. xD When I read other tutorials, it would jump from chunky shading to blended product in one screenshot. TAT;;

I knooow! It's like, the artist has amazing blending skills and then they make a tutorial so I have high hopes.. but then the shading magically happens and I'm so confused.
I've tried experimenting, too, and try and get the same effect, but it doesn't work for me. XDD
In any case, I look forward to it. Yay. |D

Amazing! I'm trying to do it along the lines of here, so hopefully.. I can get better. XD
I have a couple of questions though.
-How do you get the lineart/coloring so blended together and looking nicely?
-how do you choose the overall color pallets? I like it when you do complimentary colors and all.
-any tips for getting that super-saturated really pretty fabric colors like.. here: [link] and here: [link]
Thanks!

Starlitdragon In reply to kradeelav [2009-04-04 18:26:31 +0000 UTC]
1. Because I ink on a separate layer, I can 'colour' the lineart afterwards. The easiest way is to lock the layer transparency. Then you can colour without going outside of the inked lines. I generally eyedrop a colour close to the inked line, and darken it a little. For lines facing the lightsource, I often eyedrop a bright colour (in this picture, blue), and brighten it a little.
2. Choosing a colour palette is hard. I haven't taken any colour theory courses, so I cannot explain in an official manner. That being said, I'm a fan of combining warm and cool colours. Yellow/purple, yellow/blue, yellow/red, purple/red, lime green/red, orange purple.. Do experiment! It's not really an exact science. Also, you can find pictures with strong lighting/colour palette choice. You can eyedrop colours from there. When eyedropping, look at where the colour falls in the colour selection chart. Is a shade that looks blue in its original image really blue? Often you will find that this 'blue' is actually a greyish shade of red. When it is combined with a certain tone, like red or orange, it looks blue. If you learn how colours affect eachother, then you've got the basics of choosing colours. The beauty of colour charts is that you put a whole bunch of colours side by side, and you can see what a different hue and value make.
3. For the two pictures you linked.. that was done with my PS/OC style. Basically, I use a 70-100% feathered airbrush and.. brush bright colours everywhere. That one has to be seen. XD Sometimes I set my brush mode to "Overlay" and put some bright colours (I like to use light yellow or blue) over top of the base colours. Then I go into Open Canvas and start refining the mess with the pencil and airbrush tools there.

Actually, I have been colouring like this for a little while, although definitely not frequently- I think I started this style way back when Budgie posted her first realism tutorial. XD I think I have.. four main colouring approaches, this one being the second-easiest to show.

Haha, I think you could have shortened this a lot by simply saying, "Step 1: Be Amazing. Step 2: *finished picture*"
I kid, I kid XD;
Honestly though, this is really useful and interesting. I do love seeing the different ways people approach their art.
Personally I've love to see more about how you do backgrounds o: They look beautiful, but it'd be fun to see how you work on pretty much anything XD
Yes, beautiful work as always (:

frozenfiredragon In reply to Starlitdragon [2009-04-04 06:21:20 +0000 UTC]
Gah, but they look so beautiful! XD
Like the one for this picture; I adore kind of speed-painty backgrounds like this. They have just enough form and detail to look nice on their own, but they aren't distracting to the main focus.
I for one cannot get my backgrounds to have that nice painty look XD Hence why I'd love to see a walkthrough on that.
This was very useful in general because you include the brushes and such as well as the technique :3 So I'm sure you could put together something great for what ever you decide to focus your next tutorial/walkthrough on ^^
