Description
I took this shot near the VLA in New Mexico just as the moon was going down. It provided just enough light to capture details in the little tree but dark enough for the Milky Way to shine brightly. It's probably one of my personal favorites & i hope to be back in this area soon to capture more moments like this.Nikon D5100 + Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye
30 seconds f/2.8 ISO 3200

Amazing. So, the Moon had just set, and no part of it was visible anymore when you took this shot?
How did you make sure that the camera would find focus if there was so little light? (I've never tried to take such photos but I'd like to try some day, my problem is that it seems to me that cameras in general don't really find focus in the dark).

thanks so much! the moon was just about to completely set when i shot this. At 30 seconds/ISO 3200/f2.8 the moon provides more than enough light! On a full moon night with the same settings a photo almost looks like it was taken during the day.
For astro shots i have all my setting on manual and i manually focus the lens as well. once your eyes adjust you can see a fair amount with no light pollution. some lenses i can just set to "infinity". Others, I will point to a bright star in my shot and use the "live view", zoom in on the star and turn the focus ring slowly until it's at its sharpest point.
Hope that helps some. let me know if you have any questions
