Quick panorama from a couple of nights ago as the clouds were just starting to roll in and obscure my beloved stars. The thin high level cloud is scattering the light from some of the brighter stars, making them appear larger than normal.
Canon 5DMkII, 14mm, F/2.8, ISO 3200, 30 Seconds, 6 image panorama.

REally wonderful. I hate when the clouds roll in, but you have made it a feature.....

this is amazing! i tried something like this last night and couldn't get it on a 30 second exposure and then a 90 second. the foreground tends to end up like day light. I have a 5D and a 50mm lens.. Surely i can achieve this with what i have?

Thank you It also depends on what and where you are pointing your camera at. What time was it? Were there any artificial lights around? What section of the sky were you pointed at. You say you did a 90 second exposure, what were your other settings? The section of sky you see in my image is not visible in the night sky at this time of year and if you are too close to city lights or it has not got dark enough (for Australia at this time of year you need to wait until at least 10pm). The moon which is up at the moment at the start of the night will also play a big part. It will light up the foreground and wash out a lot of the stars. You ideally need to do it on a moonless night. The 50mm is a nice lens but to truly capture the milky way in all it's glory you ideally need a wider angle lens. According to the 400/500/600 Rule (www.capturingthenight.com/astr… the longest shutter speed you should be using with that 50mm lens is about 10 seconds. Anymore and the stars will trail too much. Good luck.

to the right of snapped with the milky way aligned in the dissolving clouds the picture would probably look even better
