Trouble Brewing

The meeting of the council of the GDF was now in session.

“Ladies, and gentlemen,” The head of the council said, “we are currently faced with the greatest threat the world has ever seen. By now, you are all aware of the giant ‘space crystals’ that are slowly tearing our world apart, and the extreme meteorological transformations that have accompanied them…..the greatest examples being San Francisco now lying in ruin, ravaged by massive earthquakes, Sydney transformed into a frozen wasteland, and volcanic eruptions have all but swallowed seattle whole…..

“And that’s not the worst of it.” came the voice of Dr. Shiragami.

“Dr. Shiragami, this is a closed session! What is the meaning of this intrusion?”

“With the council's permission, i’ve just made a startling discovery that has a bearing on these proceedings.”

The head councilman sighed, “Very well, proceed, doctor. This had better be important.”

“Thank you.” Shiragami cleared his throat. “As everyone present knows, giant crystals have manifested in several major cities, causing destruction on an unprecedented scale. However, several weeks ago, I discovered a new, more powerful type of crystal collected by Moguera, which is distinguishable by a bright, colorful aura of energy surging from its core. Our initial analysis further proves that these crystals did not originate in our galaxy...nor from this universe, I dare speculate. And what’s more, the radiation they emit has been having an…..unusual effect on the monsters. It seems to be drawing many of them in, and in several cases, monsters such as Godzilla have actually been attacking these crystals.”

“Doctor, with all due respect, we know Godzilla has been attacking them.” Tanaki stated. “So have the others in his group. They’re the reason London is back where it belongs. I fail to see what the alarm is.”

“Yes.” Miku said. “The Earth Defenders know that the crystals are harming the planet. The earth is their home, and they WILL defend it by destroying them...and stopping the mutants and aliens.”

Gyozen scoffed. “Don’t be absurd. These are mindless beasts we are talking about. The simple explanation is that all of them are hungry for the power these crystals generate.”

“You may both be correct in certain cases.” Shiragami said. “Although their true motivations remain unclear, one thing remains certain: some of the monsters appear to be growing stronger from their interactions with these special crystals. My theory is that they are absorbing the radiation surges these crystals emit, and that these surges are altering their DNA somehow. These mutations are giving rise to emergent abilities we’ve never seen before.”

“Dr., what’s the bottom line?” Tanaki asked. “What kind of threat are we facing?”

“Our simulations show that kaiju, as they absorb the radiation of these Power Surge crystals, could become unstable….a point of “critical mass”, if you will. The consequences of which could be catastrophic. There is no force on Earth that could withstand the potential destructive power of one of these titans if they were to reach “Critical Mass”.”

“Dr., that won’t happen” Miku protested. “I KNOW the Earth Defenders will continue to work together until the crystals are destroyed….

“I’ve heard enough.” Gyozen interrupted. “Our course of action is clear. We cannot allow the monsters to become even more powerful. For the sake of humanity, they must all be destroyed at any cost.”

“NO!” Miku exclaimed. “The Earth Defenders are our allies, and we cannot betray them like this! You only want revenge for your failed battles against Godzilla. When will you learn he isn’t our enemy? If it weren’t for Godzilla, and his friends, the earth would be in the Vortaak’s hands by now. We just need to give them more time, and they’ll destroy the crystals. We just need to help them along, and-”

“Miku! Please, that’s enough.” Tanaki said. “As much as I hate to say it, the admiral’s right, i’m afraid. We can’t just stand by, and let the monsters run amok. We have to do our jobs.”

“Thank you, Captain.” Gyozen said in insincere gratitude. “I’d also thank you to keep your protege on her leash. Gentlemen, the Gotengo is fully operational, and awaiting departure as we speak. In the meantime, Shiragami, I believe, is continuing research to unlock the secrets of these alien crystals as we speak.”

“I don’t know what he’s up to,” Miku thought to herself, “but it won’t be enough if the Earth Defenders don’t work together to stop this menace.”

“Very well, then.” The head councilman said. “Then I believe that will be enough for now. Meeting adjourned.” And with that, the view of the council turned off on Miku’s monitor. Now, she was going to get to the bottom of things. “Captain Tanaki, sir, you aren’t really considering betraying the Earth Defenders, are you? After all they’ve been doing for us-”

“Which is precisely the reason we’ll continue lending them our support for as long as possible.” Tanaki stated. Miku was confused. “But, sir, didn’t you say before-”

“I said that Admiral Gyozen was right, Miku: I just didn’t say he was right about all the monsters. We still have an alien, and mutant threat to deal with. And it wouldn’t do us much good if we killed off the only other chance we have at beating them, now would it? Nothing’s changed, Miku: we just have more reason to destroy the crystals, the mutants and the Vortaak forces before it’s too late. Do you follow me?”

Miku smiled. “Yessir.”

“Good. Now let’s get back to work. You never know when a new mutant is about to appear.

In Seattle, everything remained the same. Granted, many of the buildings had been damaged by the battle between Thanatos and Battra. But it hardly took away from the volcanic environment that still raged in the area. The largest volcano spewing its lava, and that lava pouring down into rivers leading out to the bay. It was still an unnatural disaster, thanks to the crystals that also plagued the city.

And it was about to get worse.

A loud rumbling began to shake the city, and caused the massive volcano resting beside it to start expending more lava than normal. Then, a massive shape began to emerge from the mouth of the volcano. It grabbed the rim of the summit, and roared into the heavens with a confused rage. The creature then began stepping out of the volcano, revealing its full form to the world: a humanoid monster made of stone, and lava with crests on its sharptoothed maw that made up its eyeless head, and a long, shark-finned tail. Its shoulders were like volcanoes, and continued to billow smoke as it marched down the mountainside.

It pounded its chest, and roared into the sky as the beast made itself known to all.

“Captain Tanaki, i’m detecting a new mutant monster reading coming from Seattle.” Miku said.

“Any idea where it originated?” Tanaki asked.

“I...don’t know. It’s like this thing just came out of nowhere. But based on the thermal readings, it’s possible this thing originated from the volcanoes themselves.”

“How is that even possible?”

“Perhaps the crystals had something to do with it, sir. Coming into contact with the Earth’s mantle must have triggered a mutation that gave this….Obsidius creature life. It’s not much, but it’s the best theory we have for the moment.”

“Agreed. And it’s best to deal with this before it becomes a major threat. Prepare Kiryu for departure, immediately.”

Due to his primal nature, the Obsidius monster knew only one thing: to destroy everything in sight. That was the only thought-process this atrocity had, and it was the only one it was interested in. Buildings fell to its intense rage as it roared violently, and shot streams of molten magma at everything in sight. What was left of Seattle would soon be rubble, and ash unless Obsidius was stopped. And the GDF were having little to no success in stopping this behemoth which could be described as a living, natural disaster.

So it was when Kiryu finally made landfall. And to say that he was shocked by the appearance of the beast would be an understatement. “Just when I thought i’d seen everything.” He said, making his approach to the creature, finally addressing it by name. “So, uh….Obsidius: I don’t suppose it’s too much to ask that you go back to sleep in the volcano you came from?” The only response he received was Obsidius pounding his chest, and roaring in defiance as he prepared for battle. “Well, it was worth a shot. Shoulder missiles: deploy.” Said missiles fired, and struck Obsidius at full force. But the beast growled as they did nothing to chip at his stone body. It just seemed to make him angrier. And drove him to tear a boulder out of the ground, and hurl it at Kiryu, who fired his Hyper Maser to blast it out of the sky. “This is gonna be harder than I thought.”

Obsidius did not know what sort of creature was attacking it, but he didn’t care. It attacked him, so it was an enemy. One that he would crush like a piece of bedrock. It charged Kiryu, ready for close-ranged combat. As it did, Kiryu activated his Wrist Laser Turrets, hoping it would do something. It barely even slowed the atrocity down as it collided with him. The two were now caught in a reverse grapple as they pushed into one another. During the scuffle, Obsidius revealed his ability to spew a magma stream that destroyed Kiryu’s right Wrist Turret. Seeing one of his weapons destroyed, Kiryu activated Thermal rockets from his backpack, and watched as they collided with Obsidius’ back. They only made the beast growl in pain before it smashed off the blue missile launchers on both shoulders, leaving Kiryu’s pack useless. Kiryu looked around frantically, and then eyed his remaining wrist turret. “Ah, what’s the use? Left Wrist Turret, disengage.”

The wrist turret fell to the ground, and Kiryu made some distance between him, and Obsidius. “Alright, then, rockhead, let’s see if you like this: Rocket Pack, disengage and launch in 3, 2, 1!” Kiryu bent over, and let his backpack shoot at Obsidius with full force. In spite of his immense strength, even Obsidius struggled against the pack for a moment. Then, to its surprise, the pack exploded in its face. Kiryu was hopeful that that attack had done something to damage the volcanic golem. But to his chagrin, the attack only served to anger Obsidius further. The beast roared in rage as it pounded its chest in challenge to the mecha. “Fine.” Kiryu sighed. “Looks like we’re doing this the old fashioned way.” He then adopted a fighting pose, and met the stone giant’s charge.

He punched into the stone body of the kaiju with all his strength. Never relenting, and never giving a quarter for the beast to retaliate. The way the creature was pushed back, it looked as if he was making some headway. But then Obsidius back-handed Kiryu through a large building, and revealed how strong it truly was. And how relentless. While Kiryu was on the ground, Obsidius grabbed him by the tail, and started slamming him against the ground at least four times before hurling him over to the bay. The beast stepped into the magma rivers to draw thermal strength as it did so. It then began to charge all of its power into a stream of magma that would surely be Kiryu’s doom. But Kiryu was not afraid, and he showed it by roaring in defiance even as he lay on the ground.

Just before Obsidius could fire, however, a familiar Atomic Ray threw him off, and knocked him into the lake. Followed by a familiar roar coming from the bay. Had Kiryu the mouth to do so, he would have smiled at the sight of Godzilla arriving. What’s more was that he had back-up in the form of Tristan and Angilas. Once he saw the downed mecha, Godzilla went over to help him up. “Having a little trouble, Meg.”

“Oh, you know: fighting super-powered volcanoes with legs can be pretty tough.” Kiryu said jokingly, just as Obsidius rose to face these new invaders to its territory. Godzilla growled, and said, “Well, don’t worry. You won’t be alone fighting this thing.”

“Just be careful.” Kiryu said as he faced Obsidius. “This thing is pretty tough.”

“Yeah? Well so are we, pal.” Angilas said.

The four titans then charged the monster, ready to take it on. Or at least, that’s what they thought. Godzilla and Kiryu took the front of the fight, and tried to overpower the brute with their strength. But in the lava, Obsidius’ strength seemed to know no limits as it tanked every punch, bite, and scratch the duo delivered. The next time Kiryu went in to punch Obsidius, it surprised everyone with its strength by grabbing his right arm, and then smashing it off at the upper bicep before kicking him away. Angilas tried to ram into Obsidius, but the beast side-stepped him, and then used him as a club to smash Godzilla away from him. Tristan tried to use his atomic flame on the beast, but that only strengthened it further, and it burned him with its lava stream.

The sight of his mate being harmed really got Godzilla’s anger boiling, and he started grappling with Obsidius, trying to pull him out of the lava lake. After head-butting the creature, he managed to grab hold of the creature, and hurl it towards the bay. It stood right at the edge, roaring in defiance as it refused to surrender. But unfortunately for him, Kiryu exchanged a glance between Obsidius, and the water. An idea suddenly sprung to him. “Of course! Godzilla! This thing is made of pure magma! Water must be its weakness!” Godzilla heard Kiryu, and nodded in agreement before facing the giant volcano on legs. He fired his atomic breath, to which Obsidius fired his magma stream in defense, and the two engaged in a beam struggle. The two were equally matched, at first, until Obsidius showed signs of faltering.  Out of his lava lake, he was vulnerable, and this struggle only made him expend his energy. So in less than a minute, Obsidius found himself on the losing end of the struggle, and was hurled into the bay.

The moment Obsidius struck the water, it writhed in agony. The cold of the bay was dampening his volcanic form, and weakening him. He tried to escape, but Godzilla was already on him like a scavenger on dead meat. Just as Obsidius stood up, Godzilla splashed him with more water, causing more pain to the stone giant. It didn’t take much longer before its movements started to slow down with every splash of water Godzilla splashed with his tail. Finally, with one more splash, Obsidius began to slow to a halt until it was completely immobile.

A living statue that would put the Colossus of Rhodes to shame.

Godzilla snorted, before he roared in victory. He then returned to where his friends were, and checked to make sure they were alright. “I’m a bit disoriented, but otherwise alright.” Angilas said. “It’ll take more than some burn to put me down, love.” Tristan said, licking Godzilla’s cheek. As for Kiryu, “I’ve seen better days, but i’m fine, too.”, who looked down to his missing arm. “All things considered. Thanks for the last minute rescue. I’m not sure how much longer I could have lasted against that thing.”

“Are you sure you’ll be alright?” Godzilla asked with concern, to which Kiryu responded, “Yeah, i’ll be fine. But I need to leave for repairs. You just focus on getting rid of these crystals, okay?”

“A simple enough task, I assure you.” Angilas said.

“Then until we meet again, take care.” Kiryu said, before activating his rockets, and taking off back to GDF HQ. Tristan, however, was curious about something. “So what do we do about the rock giant?” The trio turned to see the place where Obsidius was….only to find him missing. They were surprised, but Godzilla had a gut feeling he knew who was responsible. “We’ll worry about him another day. For now, let’s just get to work on destroying these crystals.”

“They did it again, didn’t they?” Miku said proudly as she watched the kaiju trio destroying the crystals infesting Seattle. “They worked together to defeat a common foe, and helped us in our time of need. Just like I figured they would.”

“Seems that way, Miku.” Tanaki said with a smirk. “Which only proves Gyozen wrong about some of them. But for now, let’s focus on repairing Kiryu, and worry about that stuff later?”

“Yes, sir.” Miku said, before saying to herself, “Stay strong, all of you. The world still needs your strength for what I feel is coming.

Obsidius awoke in a strange place, filled with more crystals than the eye can see. And standing nearby were Krystalak, and Thanatos, along with their newest member, Megaguirus, who Krystalak convinced to side with them as revenge for the Earth Defenders, and humans waking her from her slumber beneath Tokyo. Lies, of course, but she didn’t need to know that. The main focus was Obsidius. And right now, his focus was on Thanatos, resting on his floating throne. “Most impressive. To think that the crystals held the potential of spawning new life such as this. And one as strong, and fearsome as you. I feared you were lost to us until Krystalak brought you here. I felt your power core still burning, even when weakened by a natural weakness. It seems you cannot be terminated so easily. Advantage.”

Astaroth scowled, however, when Obsidius readied to attack him. “Or is it?” He then closed his fist, and Obsidius’ core suddenly began to hurt with such immensity, it made Obsidius bend over in agony. It was like his heart was being crushed by an invisible force. And the other monsters only laughed at his misery. Even as Astaroth kicked him onto a floating isle from his throne. “Welcome to the Mutants, Obsidius.” Astaroth said. “You shall be an honored member….so long as you never forget one, important fact about your new life: it’s mine.” He closed his fist harder, and the pain tripled in Obsidius. “Welcome, my new servant. Yes, welcome….to the Crystal Incursion!”

His monstrous laughter echoed through his realm as Obsidius writhed in anguish, and reminded of how demonic Astaroth can truly be.
