Legends dating back to the earliest days of Native American history tell of colossal "thunderbirds" that blot out the sun when in flight, and who's wing flaps are as loud as a clap of thunder. Their enormous taloned feet were capable of grasping virtually anything. In 1956, Monarch received word of a traumatized coal miner in Kyushu, Japan who babbled a mad tale after regaining his memory. He and a group of co-workers became trapped in the mine after a tremor caused a cave in. Seeking a way back to the surface, they stumbled upon a subterranean cave filled with giant crawling insects the size of automobiles, as well as a giant bird egg. After the insects attacked and devoured most of the miners, the egg hatched to reveal a monstrous winged reptile which proceeded to eat the insects one by one. Fresh off the Godzilla case, a Monarch team lead by Ishiro Serizawa was dispatched to Kyushu to investigate. With the creature being airborn, the team had great difficulty in even finding it at first. Eventually, unrelenting attacks from the Japan Self Defense Force caused a mating pair of to attack Fukuoka. The colossal pterosaurs species was named "Radon" by Dr. Serizawa. A foreshortening of "Pteranodon" which the creature most closely resembled. Over the years as Monarch agents have found difficulty in pronouncing the name, it eventually came to be known as "Rodan".

Fossil excavations in the Kyushu underground confirm that the Rodan species does in fact belong to the pterosaur genus. The origin of the species dates all the way back to the early Jurassic period, and continues into the late Cretaceous. Fossil records indicate that the Rodans developed the ability to burrow underground somewhere around the time of the great extinction which allowed them to avoid catastrophe and survive into the age of man. Their time spent in tremendous subterranean pressures triggered a biological phenomenon similar to deep sea gigantism. Resulting in the modern Rodan's average height of 70 meters. In order to lift such a massive creature off the ground, Monarch scientists estimate that Rodan's wing membranes posess the same tensile strength as steel cables used to hold up bridges. This would also explain the Rodan's ability to generate tsunami force bursts of wind by flapping their wings whilst earthbound. Much like Godzilla, Rodan's call can be heard from a maximum distance of 3 miles and can shatter even the thickest of glass windows. The Rodan Monarch is currently tracking prefers to make his home in the alps of Japan's Nagano Prefecture. Using his claws to dig deep mountainside dens to protect himself from the harsh elements. Thus far Rodan has preferred to stay within his territory to feed on various wildlife and livestock. Though with the recent resurgence of Godzilla, it may only be a matter of time before he is stirred out of hiding.

When I heard Toho licensed the Big 5 for 2018... I mean, Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidora is freaking awesome, but Angius and Rodan too?!

Dream come true right there.

Same here, Angirus was always a Kaiju I liked. Never knew as much about him as I did King Ghidora or Mothra, but I did like his design.

I think it looks very awesome, though I wonder if Rodan will be bipedal in the next film.

I do as well, originally this Rodan was gonna be bipedal like he typically is in the Toho films (only with his wings folded along his sides like in the games or like a bird), but thought a quadrupedal stance may work better, & in the end I gotta agree. He looks powerful & equally adept on land or in the air, while at the same time his wings are protected from damage when not in use this way.

Have you seen 's recent take on Rodan? The monster is also quadrupedal, though it can assume a bipedal fighting stance.

The only thing that makes me believe Rodan will still be bipedal in the sequel is because of Otachi from Pacific Rim. I mean, they already got two similar monsters who can fly, so it makes a bit sense one would be bipedal. Plus, I always consider Rodan a bit more than a average pterosaur.

Awesome design here. Love how some aspects of Otachi from Pacific Rim where used for the wings. An idea I have for Rodan in the sequel is instead of just having 1 we have a mating pair kind of like in Rodan's original film. I even have ideas for how to tell them apart, The Male having a 3rd horn on his head much like the 90's version as well having the coloring of Fire Rodan and the Final Wars version, while the Female will look kind of like the picture above but have the darker coloring of the 90's Rodan had before he became Fire Rodan.
