Description

Rodan

Intro:  There was a time when pterosaurs, like most creatures of prehistory, were seen as but evolutionary flukes.  Their paper-thin wing membranes supported by brittle twig-like limbs doomed these crude gliders to certain extinction in the wake of the fairer birds and mammals of the modern era.  Modern research has all but wholly disproved this first impression.  It is now seen as a possibility that pterosaurs were the most aerodynamically fit vertebrate flyers in Earth’s history, having yet to be surpassed.  In the age of kaiju, this outlook has not only been likely confirmed in regards to the past, but is also the staggering, terrible truth of today.  This is owed to the presence of the mighty pterosaur god; Rodan.

Story:  It did not take long after the discovery of Godzilla in the 1950s for the possible existence of other creatures like him to be taken into serious consideration.  Investigations were carried out all across the world.  One area that gained attention from the covert seekers in the 1960s was the deserted Isla de Mona, of the Puerto Rican island chain, said to be haunted by evil spirits and monsters by people of the neighboring islands.  Within the numerous caves were discovered a species of large insectoid, soon named Meganulon after their vague resemblance to dragonfly larva.  These creatures, though vicious, were not deemed a threat to the general public, as it was discovered that they were parasites, incapable of surviving on their own outside the caves for long.  Studies of the radioactive blood-like substance within the guts of neutralized specimens were inconclusive beyond the fact that something far larger was resting deep within the island’s dormant volcano.  Low-frequency acoustics, described as “moans” or “howls” were also detected echoing through the caves.  Cave-ins and Meganulon attacks made manned expeditions implausible, and for decades research was limited to remote monitorization.

After Godzilla’s appearance and apparent defeat in 2016, things began heating up.  Literally.  Volcanic activity spiked across the pacific rim, and the dormant Isla de Mona was reactivated.  With the existence of kaiju now revealed, great attention was given to the facilities that had been built on the island.  In 2018, the volcano erupted, and the world watched in terror as a great winged beast took flight from the ashes.  It flew at incredible speed across the United States before missiles damaged its’ propulsion system within the chest cavity, and unfortunately crash-landed in Chicago.  A new containment/research facility was hastily built around its’ comatose body over the next few months.  It was eventually dubbed “Radon” after one of the more common radioactive elements in its’ metabolism.

It was soon determined to be a sort of hyper-evolved kaiju pterosaur.  Also, it was apparently female.  This discovery, mild as it may seem, caused some concern among some researchers.  Comparative physiology suggested a close common ancestry with Pteranodon.  This well-known pterosaur, hailing from the late cretaceous, is known to have been highly sexually dimorphic.  Males were over twice as big as females.  And likely far more aggressive…

This theory would unfortunately be confirmed.  Another volcano erupted near the western tip of Alaska, and a small town was found wiped out even though it had been clear of the eruption.  Soon, there were reports of a very large, very swift UFO moving across the North American continent, gradually spiraling towards Chicago.  This object proved to be a male hyper-pterosaur, and was thus labelled “Rodan”.  He descended into Chicago and freed his awakened mate.  The pair then unleashed their fury upon the human constructs and obliterated the windy city before returning to the Alaskan volcano.

Over the next month, Rodan attacked several nuclear watercrafts and carried them back to his still-recovering mate within their volcanic nest.  While he was away, the nest was bombed in hopes of triggering another eruption like the one that engulfed the previous monster.  This time, though, there was resistance as Rodan returned to defend his mate.  Radon attempted to escape, but another round of bombs to her smaller form felled her from the sky and into the pit of the volcano.  Rodan descended after her, and a final bombing trapped both of them back within the Earth…

Abilities:  Rodan is one of the swiftest and most powerful flying creatures to have ever lived.  He is incredibly agile, despite his size, and routinely cruises at supersonic speeds.  When pressed, he is even capable of accelerating beyond mach 6.  This is owed not only to his powerful wings, but also to a unique propulsion system with openings along the chest and body cavity.  This feature seems to be highly derived from the respiratory air sack system and is analogous to a biological turbine engine.  Though this makes him much more lightly built, Rodan is still very resistant to damage as his ventral surface is covered in armored plates and spines.  This armor is also very heat-resistant.  It is speculated to have evolved as protection from creatures like Godzilla.

Rodan most often attacks while on the wing, pecking and slashing at opponents via a sharp, tooth-filled beak and large raptorial claws on both feet and hands.  The flapping of his wings alone in enough to generate hurricane-force winds, and his passing is often accompanied with sonic booms that can disorientate and stun smaller prey.  Though most comfortable in the air, he can also gallop about on land and dive into the sea like a gannet.  He has been observed hunting whales and submarines like this at considerable depths.

Rodan’s most effective attack is derived from his turbine system.  He is able to concentrate and accelerate the flow of air through this system before unleashing it as a “Pneumatic Laser” from his mouth.  The force of this highly concentrated gale in enough to reduce trees to sawdust and stone to sand.  This attack, fortunately, is used infrequently.  As his crest has been seen to glow during moments of heightened emotion, it is also speculated that he may be capable of some form of energy attack.  This has yet to be observed.

Character:  Though he is wary and aggressive towards approaching humans, Rodan has seldom attacked any major population centers since the 2018 incident.  Like Godzilla below, he claims the skies of Earth for himself and roosts where he pleases, generally in more isolated regions near volcanoes, especially around the Pacific.  Although he doesn’t have a set territory, there are certain areas rich in radioactive material that he will defend violently.  These areas are designated as permanent no-fly zones.  In the event that Rodan should approach a populated area, jets and rockets can usually provide a distraction, leading him to settle further away, or at least give more time for evacuations.  Like the wind, though, Rodan is very unpredictable and should always be approached with extreme caution.

I like the more pterosaur accurate design of this Rodan. As much as I like the MV Rodan, it did stick too faithfully to the original design without much change, this on the other hand is very different yet very familiar to the original Rodan!

This is so cool. It's the first quadrupedal Rodan I've seen, and I love that you've balanced accurate pterosaur design with his original style.

could Fire Rodan be a part of KR soon?, maybe based on new info on MonsterVerse's Rodan, it is said to have bio-volcanic combustion system which gives him pyrokinetic abilities, rock-like scales, plus it's wings can make sonic thunderclaps.

Another phenomenal entry.  You waste no time here when it comes to delivering the goods.  Godzilla's descent into the active volcano in the South Pacific in 2016 begins heightening activity in the Ring of Fire, which slowly awakens Rodan.  Of course, have to throw in that quality Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) reference with Rodan emerging from the the volcano on Isla de Mona in Puerto Rico in 2018.  You make this connection even further with the discovery of this potential kaiju hotbed in the 60s, whether the cave chasms around the volcano are plagued with Meganulon, a throwback to the original Rodan (1956), no less.  Since the film hasn't yet come out, we have yet to see how similar this interpretation really is but, either way, it's really nicely done.  I really like how you kept the dual Rodan scenario from the original Rodan film, then gave the female a separate name of "Radon," a nice little nod to the dub of Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993).  Then we have a grand finale where the two Rodans head off to a volcanic nesting ground in Alaska, where the humans use explosives to trigger another violent volcanic eruption to engulf them both.  As in the original film, it successfully catches both as Rodan refuses to leave his mate Radon as she sinks into the abyss of fiery fury.  It seems like a bit of a bittersweet victory for the humans, though.  Even though the two Rodans were engulfed in flames, that doesn't mean they died.  I mean, Rodan erupted from a volcano originally; what evidence do they have that an eruption will kill them?  Anyways, that's a little off-topic.  I also appreciated how you converted the two Rodans into a mating pair from their original brother origins, which I find to be more logical biologically.  Everything here seems to always connect back to biology, and love how you attempt to do so so succinctly with kaiju, which is very difficult to do.

I found it very interesting and unique how you gave Rodan a sort of internal turbine engine within his chest cavity (which I somehow see being somehow connected to the folded patterns of plating and spikes on his chest) as a way to explain his insane flight capabilities... you know, alongside those crazy strong wings.  I also very much appreciated the inclusion of the Pneumatic Laser, a reference to that seldom-remembered scene where Rodan spits radioactive gas in the original film.  Tying that back to the biological turbine engine in his chest was also an ingenues use of that unique organ.  Such a unique biological structure would make sense to be capable of being used in various ways, especially when in the hands of a kaiju.  Then, of course, because everyone loves Fire Rodan, you added in the glowing of the crest.  Even if that doesn't turn out to indicate some form of radioactive emission like Godzilla's, it's still really cool to see that Rodan's emotional content can be tracked through the fluctuation of his cranial crests.  Very nice conglomeration of film references and genuine extant biology.

As for the design, I do really like it.  Very distinctly Pteranodon (since you did very specifically indicate that this Rodan is a hyper pterosaur species), but also unique in its own right.  Long pointed beak, but with teeth (which is unusual of pterodactyloids (which appears to be the group that bore Rodan)).  A cranial crest, but one that is reduced in overall length, but instead split into three segments, the largest of them being the central piece.  Personally, I have no preference for Rodan with 2 or 3 cranial crests, so this design choice towards a more Heisei Rodan appearance doesn't bother me.  I do really like that design for the character, so I'm all for it.  I also like the purely pterosaur wings; I think more people should adopt this more realistic take on the kaiju, even if it makes him look a little more awkward to the general public.  Biology can be weird at times, but if it works, hey, it works.  I also enjoy the aesthetic design to add quills to the back of the head.  Just gives a nice added flare to his design.  One thing I do find interesting is the raised sickle claw on the 3rd digit of Rodan's hands.  Usually, larger, more powerful digits are found closer to the body, such as on the 1st or--in the case of deinonychosaurs--on the 2nd digit, but you went for the furthest digit away that doesn't make up the wing.  I am also curious to see what function this extended claw would have.  Since most scientists believe that dinonychosaur sickle claws (which I'm assuming this is what it's based off of) were used predominantly for pinning and stabbing prey versus gutting them with grand slashing motions of the legs, I would be interested to see how Rodan would use his set of sickle claws.  Are they used to enhance grappling?  Are they for pinning prey and, if so, why would a pterosaur use its hands to pin prey and not its beak or feet?  Are these claws sharp and powerful enough to actually slash (since, you know, Rodan is a kaiju, so he doesn't have to abide by the laws of saurian biology/anatomy) and gut prey and, if so, would he use them as such?  Would this indicate a Rodan design that relies more so on this hands than his feet to attack, or even his beak?  Just some thoughts of mine.

I wanted to make this one shorter, but that was debatably successful.  Either way, this was another fantastic entry and I really look forward to where this series goes!

Rodan has a glowing crest... this only means that he could generate the dreaded Uranium heat beam, which is extremely dangerous for anything caught on it because of the sheer radiation it emits.

Thanks.  I went back and fourth a lot between doing something closer to some of the original designs and incorporating more accurate elements.  Eventually, I figured that real pterosaurs were just too unique and interesting to be left completely out.

Basically, she’s about half his size, has smaller crests/horns, and lacks the decorative red filaments at the back of the neck.  I also picture her as having a duller grayish hue.

I have.  It’s pretty convincing, but I’m not gonna say for sure if it’s the actual official design or not until we get a glimpse in a trailer or other clearer source.  I think the superficially avian features are an interesting touch considering that I’ve heard that one of the initial concepts for Rodan was more of a giant prehistoric bird, similar to an Archaeopteryx.

SapphicWolf In reply to Transapient [2018-07-15 13:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Fair point, it could still be a fake or even just an unused earlier concept. It'll be interesting to see whether he's supposed to actually be a pterosaur or another product of convergent evolution from the Permian period like Godzilla.

Transapient In reply to user70 [2018-07-13 19:16:39 +0000 UTC]

I went back and forth with a few different designs.  Mainly between a simple short-tailed look similar to the Heisei and Final Wars versions as well as real pterodactyloid pterosaurs, and something like a fan or filament-like spread like the original version.  Ultimately opted for the simpler one.  Most large flying animals in real life have highly reduced tails to lessen weight and drag.
