Description
My latest in a series of what I call "Moment Posters", just highlighting a particularly epic moment in each G-Film. Unlike a lot of fans (apparently) I'm not the biggest fan of the Kiryu Saga, they've just never been my favorites of the whole history of Godzilla films, but Tokyo SOS was a pretty strong entry regardless of my feelings, and the final battle was quite good. I thought it was a nice, gutsy touch to have Kiryu get in there and be so aggressive toward the end with the drill arm.

Mechagodzilla really looks like he hates the fact that he has to fight one of his own.

Pretty encouraging if that can come across on a metal lizard face

Just that it's nice to know how expressive these monsters can be, even on the suits with static facial expressions it's always been a fun part of the franchise that you can still read the emotion on the suits during certain scenes.Β It's nice to know that translates into drawings as well.

Kiryu became one of favorite characters in the godzilla universe. Giving a Mechagodzilla a soul was an amazing choice in my opinion. For me these two movies were great and really drove home what Godzilla is about. Nature showing the folly of man as the song goes. I really like this piece and I hope other people can see what I saw in it. You did a great job.Β Β Β

Thanks for the good word, and I would definitely agree that Kiryu itself is my favorite element of those two movies, the ghost in the machine is a concept I can get behind.Β Doesn't change the fact though that it is a pain to draw XDΒ But that's mechs in general.

Magnificent. The action with the drill hand is such a spot on scene to build this around. You did a wonderful job all over. Having the Mothra stuff on both opposite corners is a great way to compact the action

It warms my monster loving heart to get the affirmation on the composition choices, believe me, since I tend to fall into the camp of artists who second guess every dumb thing Β All I knew from the outset was I was going to highlight dear old man Koizumi over that annoying kid because I love the old boy and he deserves it! XD

Oh! Nice! Tokyo SOS was one of the Godzilla films I used to rent from my, at the time, local library pretty often, so I have some nostalgia attached to it. Kiryu is a pretty awesome MechaG, even though it took me a long time to call him that and not exclusively "Mechagodzilla 3".Β
I actually just finished and posted a Showa Mechagodzilla sketch myself that took hard work, but I think it turned out well. However, I read the description, and I'm curious,
What's wrong with the Kiryu saga?Β

To be clear there's no Godzilla movie I hate, and I do mean that, but there are some that just don't do it for me.Β When Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS came out in the States on dvd I was already 18-19, and had been loving Godzilla since I was about 3, so when they announced Mechagodzilla for the Millennium series I was a little annoyed that they were recycling old monsters again since my hope was to keep seeing new kaiju, and we'd just come off of GMK.Β For me GXMG was just really, really boring, and I didn't like how they portrayed Godzilla in it as much (especially him standing still while taking a barrage of missiles at the beginning), especially running away from battle early on which seems against character.Β The audience of fans I watched it with at G-Fest actually booed that moment they found it so offensive.Β Tokyo SOS on the other I like a lot more, though it still has a lot of recycled elements and re-using monsters I was kinda tired of seeing over and over again.
Over the years I've grown to like the films more for their merits, there's a lot to love for sure.Β Kiryu is a cool Mechagodzilla and the designs on the suits overall are just great, and of course the music is just rad.Β They're still pretty low on my overall ranking of the whole series but they're not terrible, just not personally satisfying for me.Β I have found though over the years talking to other fans of all ages that the two movies are definitely popular with younger fans, extremely so, so I don't really rag on them too much because it's clear the movies won the hearts of the Millennial fan crowd.
