My friends over at Facebook wanted me to give an interpretation of the Legendary Godzilla after the video leak today, so I decided to have some fun with it. I don't pretend this is incredibly accurate to the final creature, that video was bloody dark XDRelated content

I did redo this one, I didn't want people to think I was dumping too hard on ol' Zilla boy.

This picture was made long before we had a clear, good look at the design, if you'll notice the date on the upload it was in July of 2013, almost a year before the film came out.Β We didn't quite know what he looked like yet.

Zilla, as his own monster, is an entertaining sci-fi movie and late 90's cartoon series...but not so much a Godzilla movie/series. :/

I have a warm place in my heart for Zilla because of seeing the film at 13 and seeing it kick start the Japanese series again, it was a good time to be a G-fan even if the movie itself wasn't very true to the essence of what made Godzilla awesome, so no I could never hate him. Β Besides, as you point out it spawned Godzilla the series which I absolutely love, so hurray for good things coming out of mediocre things

love the redux . I dont hate zilla ether, i kinda like zilla he isn't one of one favorites, i just dont like that the fact that G-fans hate zilla just because he has the name godzilla in 1998 and a different look and dosent make a good monster, i do agree with them but just call him a different name now its zilla not godzilla, today in this year i expected fans to give zilla some love but only few.Β

Awesome and funny artwork, friend, as a fan of Godzilla since childhood, I could not agree more, Zilla; aka. american/Emmerich's "Godzilla" was a joke IMO. I have not seen the movie yet, I hope I'll be able to watch it this week.
As a side note, I wonder how Mechagodzilla (Kiryu specifically) could look like with A-budget special effects, I hope they make it happen because I have read there will almost certainly be a sequel(s).

Thanks much.Β But as another lifelong Godzilla fan I actually hope they DON'T do Mechaogodzilla, and I have two basic reasons for this; A, he's been done to death.Β 3 generations, 3 versions of him.Β I'm tired of him, frankly, I long for more and more original creations, like thankfully the MUTO were.Β Secondly, giant robots would not fit in the tone created for this new Legendary series, not unless one of the films takes place 50 years in the future when technology would allow for it to be "possible".Β But that just me.Β I don't want Mecha-G or Kiryu in the new series, but I know a lot of fans don't agree with that.

KaijuDuke In reply to KaijuKid [2015-08-04 21:56:41 +0000 UTC]
I couldn't agree more with the hope that they don't use MechaG for any of the future Legendary Godzilla films. Like you said already, for MechaG to be brought in they would have to have the story take place years into the future in order to justify the level of technological progress required to build such a machine, they don't even have masers yet. Plus, and this is the real kicker, MechaG has indeed been done to DEATH, he's had three different incarnations already and trying to explain away why anyone would build a giant robot in the image of the creature that's trying to kill them is not really an easy task (heck, for the Millennium series they retconned the destruction of the original Godzilla's bones to justify using them as the support frame & base for the new robot....I mean yes, they COULD find some ancient Gojira fossils to make this work, but again, would require major technology boost & has been done already). MechG is cool and all, but I'd rather see Godzilla face either a brand new monster to expand his rogues gallery further, OR, a monster who hasn't had the spotlight in a long time in sharp contrast to someone like MechaG who's been over utilized big time.
Honestly, if Godzilla were to face mecha in the legendary films or even the upcoming new Toho series, I'd much rather he fight an original giant robot, or perhaps something like the Super X from the Return of Godzilla or the Lizard Slayers from the cartoons, something different. Heck, updated versions of JJ or Moguera would be more welcome even than another MechaG...Hell, the video game I've been playing for the playstation 4 forced FIVE versions of MechaG into the game, two of which are just variants of the actual existing official three versions we know.

I'd love to see the Cybersaur from the Dark Horse comics done in live action, but I imagine there's probably copyright hassles involved with any of that.Β But the scary part is I'm hearing whispers that Legendary IS planning to throw Mechagodzilla into the mix of their sequel, which makes me afraid they're trying to overcompensate for all the people that were upset by the lack of kaiju in the first movie.Β We don't need a huge wad of monsters int he sequel, we just want them to have reasonable screen time and some awesome fights.Β I dunno, it's mostly speculative at this point, but for the first sequel I seriously think Ghiddy, Mothra and old Rodan would be quite fine!

KaijuDuke In reply to KaijuKid [2015-08-07 06:40:19 +0000 UTC]
Agreed, the Famous Four altogether again for a major monster melee should be more than enough for the second film, no need to force MechaG into the mix as well, especially since they only just established in the first film that all these monsters belong to the same nuclear primordial ecosystem, they should probably avoid robots and mutants and what not until at least the third film (& for that film I'd rather see monsters who haven't been in as many films or brand new beasties like the Muto etc). I'd rather see the Famous Four throw down with one another throughout the course of the entire film, or have Godzilla, Rodan, & Mothra team up against Ghidorah like in the good old days. I'll admit I wasn't initially impressed to hear about Ghidorah & Mothra being added to the film since they were common sights during the Millennium era, but at least it should be cool to see them brought to life using the same special effects they used for Godzilla & Pacific Rim (& Ghidorah as a primordial super predator makes a better alternate origin for him than benign magical guardian dragon in my book lol), and as for Rodan? I'm PUMPED for Rodan, since he really wasn't treated with love or respect he deserved during the Millennium era and is long overdue for a strong outing as either a serious rival for Godzilla or a powerful ally against Ghidorah....I also think it would be cool if Rodan were a predator to Mothra, the early bird catches the worm so to speak >;3Β

I see your point and I agree with your reasoning, but considering, although there is a rumor at best, that Guillermo del Toro expressed interest in making a crossover between Godzilla and Pacific Rim (personally I see it more as something you can read in a bad fanfic, tbh), a new Mechagodzilla could be interesting to see with A-budget special effects, I cannot lie, its one of my favorites.
Maybe I sin too much of being nostalgic, but among Kiryu, other monsters such as Space Godzilla (on that one, it could be impossible to come with a good reason for its existence anyway), King Gidorah, Biollante, etc., could look extremely badass with modern special effects IMO.

As he should be, I kinda look at Zilla like I look at Venus from the live action Ninja Turtles show...a footnote that will never be seen again but was really novel and interesting for the time.Β Besides, I enjoy GINO as a spin-off now, since he appeared in one "official" Godzilla movie and was humorously dissed in GMK.Β That, for me, makes it just a fun novelty in the series.Β I'm kinda glad more fans are cooling down about Zilla's place in the franchise these days.
