Description Given the passing of time and finally having GOOD shots of the new Godzilla, it was time to update one of my favorite old pics.  That, and in the interest of fairness give Zilla a chance for some snarky comebacks   It's all for fun, folks, please don't freak out and start a flame war.

I actually liked the animated cartoon, the relationship that Nick had with Godzilla/Zilla jr was kind of emotional. any moment Nick was in danger I always pictured Zilla thinking "STAY AWAY FROM MY DADDY!!" I don't know why but I always think that's what Zilla was saying. XD

I like that, actually, to me Zillers sometimes acted like a big scaly cat so it fits

Exactly, too bad so many people hate the 98 Godzilla. I mean yeah it's different and I myself hated it till I watched the animated series, every moment Zilla charges in to save Nick it reminds me of how dogs and other loyal animals charge in head first to save their owners. The only thing I hate now about 98 and the animated series is Nick's girlfriend, I was hoping out of these events something would make her just go away.
1. She gets stepped on by another mutant who she was trying to get a better shot.
2. The French agent girl "Forgot her name" slaps her and calls her a idiot.
3. Nick gets tired of her taking advantage of his investigating and breaks up with her.
and finally number 4. The aliens "Forgot their names too" mind control her to get information and almost shoots Nick with one of the aliens blaster things and Zilla steps in being like. "Bitch you better back off before I roast you big time."

Kinda funny given your name and avatar   It's a really solid show though, far more fun and in keeping with the spirit of original Toho Godzilla than the film, just kinda hindered by a low animation budget like a lot of cartoons were in the late 90s

No worries, for the record I have a big soft spot in my heart for ol' Zilla as well, I enjoy the film and take it for the fun it was intended to be.  Kaiju fanboy snobbery over the movie is about the cringiest thing the fanbase still regularly indulges in.

Nailed it.  This little comic strip was something I made as a direct response to real conversations with an insane Zilla/Shin hater.  The absolutely dumb side of the fanbase that doesn't know how to have fun with the thing they supposedly love.

Actually, The animated series failed.

KaijuKid In reply to GojiFan78 [2018-11-03 15:33:34 +0000 UTC]

Not really, it was bumped off mainly by the impact of Pokemon and Digimon booting lots of otherwise good shows out of the schedules, otherwise the Godzilla 98 series was considered a solid ratings holder.

Well in a History of Godzilla video, The person that made the vid said it failed.

Well send along a link to the video and I'll observe their professional opinion and see what their facts are.  Because the show did "fail" in the sense that it got booted in favor of bigger fad shows like Digimon, but it was a well watched and well liked show, so in that sense no it didn't "fail".  Because fan opinion otherwise isn't "fact".  A fan once tried to inform me that Megaguirus was a terrible Godzilla film, and it's one of my personal favorites.  I asked them what their sources were.  They said "a guy that wrote an article said it's a fact that it's terrible".  That's not fact, that's opinion.  There's a massive difference.

At least the 90's version didn't trip over its own feat.  It was able to dig underground and tunnel behind the enemy while being fired at from all over.  Look at half of the stuff it did.  After the lasers or beams were exploding in front of him while standing still, he was gone when the smoke cleared.  This means he tanked those attacks like it was nothing and tunneled in a matter of seconds.  Heck, he even tunneled through buildings with such efficiency that the building remain intact.  HE could even scale them without doing damage to the walls.  On top of all that, it was implied to have all the same powers as the original Japanese version while being actually intelligent.

I have a lot of love for Zilla 98, I don't think it deserves all the hate.  I mean yeah I think the series was better, but as a standalone movie there's honestly a lot to love, especially as a time capsule of fun 90s movie tropes and styles.

I would have killed for a top shelf anime during the height of the Heisei series as I love that era of anime, but for whatever reasons 2017 is the year we finally get a full fledged Godzilla anime feature and while I can lament the past I am pretty thrilled to see what it will offer.  But yeah Godzilla the series was my jam, I cannot express how happy I was when that finally hit dvd shelves.

Probably the fact that the Godzilla The Series version of the character really was more like classic Godzilla than his movie associate, I would say

Yeah. I learned today that all incarnations of the character have to be referred to as Zilla, but that one from the series does act a whole lot like Godzilla.

In a good manner. So the 1998 GODzilla was way better than the 2014 one.... Okay the 2014 looks cool and stuff like that, but the story was boring unenjoyable. 1998 is mostly showing the american arrogance thou, and set GODzilla as a scared small lizard, and had no special capabilities, like radioactive fire breath, but it was stuffed with more action than the new one. I bought the 2014 one but its a huge disappointment to me. I feel I wasted my money on that.

1998 GODzilla is the best in my opinion.

JW-Gojifan In reply to SkywalkerWilliam [2015-12-04 18:44:08 +0000 UTC]

1998 had the monster doing absolutely NOTHING and is an insult to the franchise.  The 2014 film redeemed the character in America and now we get sequels.  There is honestly no comparison between the 2.  Zilla insulted Godzilla and TOHO was disgusted

All fair points from the perspective of personal enjoyment.  I still have a soft spot for the '98 film, and like the point of this pic the series it spawned was one of my favorite shows growing up.  Cheers.

KaijuDuke [2015-08-07 06:59:40 +0000 UTC]

I like both Godzilla cartoons, & I have to say Godzilla the Series was the only good thing that came out of the whole 98 fiasco (besides Toho producing the Millennium era to wash away the disappointment & even later on our second chance at an American Godzilla film, which thankfully worked out XD). So many cool monsters were introduced in that series, would love to see the Legendary or Toho Godzilla throw down with the likes of Crustaceous Rex, The Crackler, & the Lizard Slayers, etc, shame to let such cool beasties go to waste (though i will admit some of them could have used better names...Or names period, seriously, kaiju should not go nameless lol). I will admit however that while the cartoon did a better job of being faithful to the Big G than the 98 film, I do feel there were a few too many episodes in which Jr. only won the day because the H.E.A.T. team exploited some crippling weakness of his opponent to give him the win, or the humans flat out beat the monster themselves...I mean, nice to see strong human characters mind you, but I watch Godzilla to see Godzilla win the day not his human buddies.

Ironically, the formula of the series would have lent itself well to the Legendary Godzilla continuity, you know, recategorize the mutations the H.E.A.T. team usually faced as primordial giants like in the Legendary film & they wouldn't have to come up with as many weak pseudo science explanations for the monsters each week, or wave the origin story away by saying "they were created by the same radiation that created Gino" etc. That way mutations could have been categorized along with aliens & robots as something to shake up the norm while the bulk of the monsters would be mysterious living fossils like Godzilla, can show up whenever & wherever without warning...And Elsie's paleontologist degree would come in handy more often too! XD

Excellent work on this piece here btw, I like the first one two, but you can see an obvious improvement in the art quality and designs of both monsters, very well done
