Description
My 4th Portrait finished! I didn't have the heart to call it 'Blending and Hair Study', as the model is a beauty!Pic is about 7” by 10” on A4, using graphite pencils 2H – 8B
I've tried to look at blending and hair and try out a few new techniques, some of which have worked better than others! The hair still looks scratchy, so any hints and tips would be really welcome!
The Reference was: with the kind permission of the amazing =sachtikus .
His gallery is pretty amazing stuff and I saw this photo and thought 'I have GOT to try and draw that!'
Hope you all like it, but it's really a practice piece, as I try and improve, so please give me some tips!

Hey man it looks great. You've done a great job. If you want me to suggest anything, I would say some of the white loose hairs could do with being a bit more 'in focus' a little sharper I guess. Although I know this is hard to achieve. You probably need a sharper edge on your rubber (I don't know what kind(s) you use). Also where the cheek bone meets the jawline on the right side looks a little clumsy.
But I'm clutching at straws trying to give you some criticism (hopefully constructive), all in all it's a great drawing.

I agree with your points I'm using soft nylon rubbers and I don't think they do the job
They can't cut through the graphite layers properly, especially when sharp as there isn't any 'meat' behind them
I think I need a different way of doing things heh
Yeh there is that small awkward patch at the cheekbone...I should go back and correct it, but I need to move on now
I appreciate the comments though, so will try better next time!

Yes, then sounds like you need a harder rubber too, I use a couple different ones when drawing (and white tack xD).
And I don't blame you for not amending it either, I'm the same. When I have finished with a drawing then it's done and I wont go back to it (unless its a commission). Generally I would rather just acknowledge the error and move on to the next drawing, nothing wrong with that

Exactly! Except....now you've pointed out that cheek thing....it's just...staring at me...arggh!! Ok I've spent 5 mins on a quick erase and re-blend, then 5 mins rescanning and resizing image heh
Is that better? I'm leaving the hairs

YES, much better. Okay, maybe small alterations like that are actually worth it. But yeah I would leave the hair as it is too

Yeh I thought I could correct that in no time, but I'll need a new eraser if I use that technique for hair again I might try something different next time, but I suspect the only way to do the flyaways is a sharp eraser....ah well, might have to get hold of one

just use a regular eraser, the steadtler rubbers do a good enough job, and use a blade or something to cut an edge. Thats how I used to do it.

Yeh I chopped up my erasers into small triangles with a sharp edge...still doesn't want to cut through the graphite I'm wondering if one of the harder rubber erasers would work better, instead of the softer white nylon ones?

Yeah I dunno, I guess trial and error is the best way to find out

More than likely I've tried to find out while skipping the practice and it doesn't seem to work
Looks like I'll just have to keep drawing and muddling through to find my own style

I think you should try posing yourself a bit more bud. You could perfect the 'look'. Or even better...you and Stein could make a mean set of photo's heh...you just need to find another photographer to take them!

Good idea! Stein and I were actually talking about doing a tandem set. I was the one who got him started on going to the gym with me, and we've seen a dramatic change in our physique. Cool idea!

Sooooooooooo nice and beauuuuuuuuutiful work my dear
Amazing n nicely detailed
i m not professional but i think jsut a lil bit shade and scale difrence, just ignored or ... i dont know
but seeing ur work i think u can do
Congrates on so nice work

Kalgoras In reply to irfanwasiq [2011-06-01 12:08:56 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Yeh I tried to upscale this picture as the reference is a bit small, however I had another smaller picture for the shading and I think my eye was sometimes copying smaller details on the wrong scale
I realise the shading is a bit off, but I can't get my scanner to capture the image without ruining the blending a bit hehe. It's a lot more sensitive than my eyes to harsh areas of shading and less smooth transitions

I love this piece.
I have so messed up proportions myself and this doesn't come close to my screw ups!
The only thing I could possibly see is the nose is not as long but, not really.
You did wonders with the hair, the background, the skin a lot of excellent pencil work!
ty for sharing
