Description
My 4th Portrait finished! I didn't have the heart to call it 'Blending and Hair Study', as the model is a beauty!Pic is about 7” by 10” on A4, using graphite pencils 2H – 8B
I've tried to look at blending and hair and try out a few new techniques, some of which have worked better than others! The hair still looks scratchy, so any hints and tips would be really welcome!
The Reference was: with the kind permission of the amazing =sachtikus .
His gallery is pretty amazing stuff and I saw this photo and thought 'I have GOT to try and draw that!'
Hope you all like it, but it's really a practice piece, as I try and improve, so please give me some tips!
- Kal

I have the Works in Progress to prove it! I did crop it right to the edge so you can't see the fuzzy graphite work hehe
Thanks for the comment though as ever!

The hair is gorgeous, well done on getting the contrast just right. I'm not seeing anything there that needs fixing imho. Seeing as this was a study on hair I wouldn't beat yourself up on the face (which looks good, again you've got the eyes spot on). You've got a good eye for portraits as each one is a leap over the last.
As for me, I'm struggling with getting that big WH40K piece done, too much is going on atm for me to sit down for a few hours to complete it, but your work-rate is pulling me along!...it will be completed!!

I've replied to your blog bud, but I'll re-iterate...don't sacrifice the quality. We want to be amazed!! Appreciate the comments as always! Yeh the hair is improved from my Aragorn picture as it looks a bit more realistic, however I did let the quality slip nearer the bottom of the piece, so I think I'll have to keep the concentration up and do the same processes all the way down.
I'll try and improve for next time!
The skin was blended a bit more successfully and actually looks smoother in reality as playing with levels and contrast on the scanner seems to define blocks of colour, rather than accentuate smooth blends
I'm pleased with how the piece turned out and I've had some great feedback, so I'm spurred on to new things! Got a 40k related piece coming next...

Yay, more 40K stuff!...go on, go on, ,go on, go on, go on.
It's funny how the artist see's all the flaws yet the person viewing just doesn't...I do that all the time too!...that self-critic needs a good kicking at times.

You can complain about the "scratchiness" of the hair all you want, but I just want to know how you make it look like HAIR. (That is still beyond me D
In other words, this is AMAZING.

Aww thanks! Well for me, it's about copying the photo...so I don't see why everyone can't do it?
It took me ages, but it's about drawing what you see
I'm pleased with the result so far, but improvement is the plan

very impressive, jonkal! look at all your hard work-- it totally paid off. the reference picture's hair is very soft with no defined highlights like how you have here in the drawing but i do like what you did to it because it actually looks more realistic in your drawing (but i would have loved to see more stray highlighted strands on her left side). this was a toughy and you pulled through so bravo!
i also saw that you submitted it to a bunch of groups which is an awesome way of getting your work out there.

Yeh I discovered groups early on and realised that people submit to quite a few! I like doing it, as so many more people look and you never know who will give that gem of advice or feedback, or who you get into conversation with!
I've got some great people on my watch list and friend list from groups heh. I'll try doing a bit more on my next portrait

desdainart In reply to Kalgoras [2011-06-01 18:19:09 +0000 UTC]
I started doing the whole group thing and realized it just wasn't for me. If I get a random group requesting to add my work into their gallery, then I was more than okay with that. I found no satisfaction in getting any more views/faves or whatever anddd I get random strangers saying random things in my comment area like "oh..." and I'm like really? WTF is that supposed to even mean? So I get a bunch of stupid comments blowing up my inbox that's not even worth trying to filter out and delete. You do what you gotta do sir.
I am completely happy with the little group of people that follow my work and I enjoy my conversations with them. I think I'll want more lime light as my clay work progresses because I actually want to sell those. I'm thinking of just making a separate account for that? I don't know. We'll have to wait and see.

Well for me, it's a nice little buzz of encouragement to keep drawing heh. I like people to see what I do and enjoy it, so I don't mind. The only minus side is going away for one weekend and having about 2000 watch messages heh... I'm not going to sign up for those 'pageview groups' or anything mad like that, but for me it's a bit like 'keeping score'
I know DeviantArt is a bit wierd in what's considered popular, so if I really wanted pageviews, I'd draw naked female manga characters performing sexual acts But if people enjoy the stuff I'm doing, it helps me concentrate to get the next piece done!
I showed my work to people other than my family at the weekend and somebody already asked me to do a picture for them...for...money??
I didn't think I was there yet, so might have to investigate heh
Anyway, thanks for the conversations as always Your clay work is coming on amazingly well, so combine that with your book craft, pencil work, what's next?

desdainart In reply to Kalgoras [2011-06-01 18:40:52 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, those pageview stuff irks me because of the shady things people are willing to do just to get pageviews. It's kind of sad really. DevART is just not the place to take as a serious art community any more. You are right-- your inbox will blow up if you don't mind it daily. It was more of a waste of time than anything else for me. I rather keep to the people who really enjoy my work and take the time to watch and converse with me.
That is true.. if I really did want popularity I'd take a photo of my big boobs and call it a day. And good for you! Look at you getting offered money! I think that's what did it for me-- when i finally caved in and started taking commissions to help pay for art supplies it ruined my experience with drawing. It started to feel more like a chore and I wasn't enjoying it any more. I think that's why I explore other media because I was losing the feeling I used to get when I had a pencil in my hand.
I want to continue my clay work and maybe my exploration of art will end there. I have always wanted to be-- and I'm still actively seeking to be-- a physicist. If you think I am good with drawing you should see how I am with a chalk and chalkboard calculating letters and numbers. But I think my true calling is art and I will die an artist regardless of what career choice I choose. I'm so melodramatic sometimes haha.

That's is a minor worry for me, when art begins to feel like work At the moment, it's still great
I would take a picture of my Moobs and splash it over DA, but I don't want to actively lose friends and be tried by the UN for crimes against humanity...
Ah well, we'll have to see where life goes! Good luck on the physicist front! I'd love to be a cosmologist, but I fail at maths
I'm a scientist at school and university, but maybe I should have taken up art 20 years ago instead of dropping it. My life may have been very different now...who knows?

Haha.. yeah, let's not share more than we have to, okay? We'll keep some body parts only to ourselves, thank you very much.
I want to be an astrophysicist and also study quantum particle physics. It's weird because one is at such a massive scale while the other is at a molecular level, but I love them both. Math has always been my strongest subject and science have always peaked my interest. Let's not dwell on 20 years ago and work on what we have now and you're doing so good.

I think the hair is amazing actually especially around the scalp! There is a difference between the shading in the hair towards the bottom and the top. Maybe darken your shadows a little there? Honestly though this is truly fantastic!
