Description Finished my first attempt at the male physique after doing my first female one in my Battle Sister Eden picture! ([link] ). Have to even up the gender odds!

Next time I'm going to choose one WITHOUT a tattoo!!

Reference below is the awesome ~SteinZupancic by *DiamonEyes so go check out his amazing gallery!

'Gunz Loaded': Actual Size photo:

This is done on A4 Bristol Smooth (8”x12” but had a tiny 5mm border around the edge for me to hold...now cropped out ) using 2H – 8B Graphite pencils and a lot of time and swearing (bloody tattoooooo!!!).

I could darken the background a bit more and just constantly keep fiddling with it...but it's time to post!

Fullview is a LOT bigger than real life size (see above), so you can see all the technical flaws heh! *Updated image as I saw some blotches *

Hmm really need to improve my tonal values! Not made some of the dark areas dark enough....something for next drawing! I am pleased with how his hands turned out though!!

Hope you like it, I think it's one of the best I've done from a technical point, but tons to learn still! Comments and criticism welcome!

Yeh, this one, his left arm behind his body should be much darker, so should his torso...in fact the whole right side of the picture is a bit light

Thanks Rick, but I think I failed you on this one...my dark tones aren't dark enough I'm backsliding into not really punching out the contrast hehe. The right hand side of the drawing is too light (ignore the background, I wasn't going to darken that ), but his torso and arms should be darker on the right side of the picture...I've not really got the tone right, so next piece I'll have to trust my instinct a bit more and put that graphite down

This very good, Jonkal! You've stepped up your game. I'd say the blending is my favorite part. I'd like to see you go even further with future projects and expand your tonal values-- 'cause you're really good at this.

Kalgoras In reply to desdainart [2011-07-12 19:35:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeh I think I could have gone darker on the dark areas...I was a bit half-hearted in many places

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

desdainart In reply to Kalgoras [2011-07-12 19:51:49 +0000 UTC]

I do that sometimes myself. That's why when I'm done with a drawing I set it aside for at least one whole day and then I come back to it to see if I'm still satisfied. If I am, then I'll spray it down. If I'm not, I'll continue working on it. After a day or so with a fresh mind you'll see that the half-ass shortcomings are an eye sore and you will want to touch them up.

Kalgoras In reply to desdainart [2011-07-12 19:54:53 +0000 UTC]

I may yeh go over this tomorrow and see what happens His left arm could be darker, but I'm not going to darken the background any more

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

desdainart In reply to Kalgoras [2011-07-12 20:11:05 +0000 UTC]

Meh.. backgrounds are of zero importance and I don't even make it a practice of paying any attention to them haha.. But yeah, you're right-- there are some dark shadows on his left arm and his whole front torso. You got this!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kalgoras In reply to desdainart [2011-07-12 20:15:08 +0000 UTC]

yeh, those are the things...I just seem to be afraid to go as black as the references sometimes...I see how dark it is...yet...I can't bring myself to darken the image so much...must be some kind of mental block hehe!

I did it for my Aragorn pic and that was the standout improvement for me, so I seem to be slowly backsliding to my old ways My Titan Legio Skitarii picture looks very 'grey' because of it, so I don't want to go that way again!

Next image...make my blacks black!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

desdainart In reply to Kalgoras [2011-07-12 20:23:26 +0000 UTC]

I completely understand what you mean. Sometimes I second guess myself when it comes to the really dark values. Well, if you take a look at your drawing and the most important part of it will be the face, right? Well, you can always use that as a reference for your darkest and lightest values. You can get by just using the same dark values as the face. For example, the darkest part of his face would be that hint of shadow under his left eye, therefore your darkest shadow on the rest of his body should be at least that dark-- you don't have to go as black as the photo. I hope I'm making sense.

You are! I think I'm at the stage where I need to sign off on this one and move onto another drawing hehe I could work on it for ever otherwise...

But I think what I'll try is be a bit more trusting of my eyesight and go dark when it's dark...see what happens
