Description
Be careful when downloading, because this is...gigantic.Finished my promised tutorial on how to make 3-dimensional animal ears. The craft foam and tinfoil ones are okay but I wanted something a little more realistic.
Important note: The base ears should look a little too small--once you add the fur, they will appear much larger. So be careful to avoid making ears exactly the size you want the first time around.
Feel free to comment or note/message me if you have any questions! Oh, and if you use this tutorial, please message me a link to a picture! I love seeing pictures. :3
Oh, and I totally take commissions on these little suckers, so if you run into a lot of trouble or just get lazy I'd be happy to whip some up for you. :3

And the ears I'm making are for a cosplay of this, but as a human - - > [link]
In that case, roughly how large should I make the paper bases and the foam?

My ears in the photo were actually 2" across at the base and 1.75" tall at the inner side. Since Ammy's ears would be more likely to disappear into a wig, I'd make the base at least 2.25 and the inner side 2.
I don't at all mind questions, ask away! But do please ask the same question only once. If I haven't answered it yet, I may not be online or might be preoccupied with something else. It doesn't mean I'm ignoring you.

Its okay. SOrry if I'm overflooding you with repeats, its not intentional
Also, I have the foam and the bases already measured out, and they look SO much more correct and cuter. Since the fur makes them look extra poofy, I made them a bit smaller then what you suggested there (because white faux fur is like a snowstorm when you fluff it lol )

You'll definitely want to scale down the size then. I didn't list the measurements because different costumes require different sizes of ears. But at least you can use paper drafts to make sure you're at least close to your ideal ear size.

Well, just for future ideas, you might want to list the dimmensions and measurements you used, in case any one wants to make a pair of ears about the size you made in the tutorial. : )

They can always ask, and I'd be happy to tell them. Besides, it's not like my ears came out the perfect size the first time anyway.

Also ALSO (Sorry if I am spamming you with questions!):
How large should the bases be if the ears I am making are for this? [link] I was thinking maybe an inch and a half?

True. Looks like I know what I'm doing over the weekend though lol.
Also, where can I buy the E6000?

E6000 is sold in many craft stores--JoAnn and Michael's should both have it.

I actually have my ears all done now!
Now that I scaled them down to a good size, they are perfect! And so much so, that I wore them into school today: my friends loved them lol

i really want to use this tutorial, but the shape of the ear kind of confuses me D: does the non curved triangle connect to the front of the curved one? what goes on the bottom?
thanks, this is great tutorial, the best i've seen for this

Katsumiyo In reply to windything [2012-02-07 08:05:38 +0000 UTC]
See where I wrote "IN" and "OUT" on the edges? That means the inside edge on the triangle connects to the inside edge on the curved piece. And there's nothing on the bottom; you just glue the clip to the bottom of the front, flat-edged triangle, as seen in the photo.

okay thanks! should my two triangles be the same height?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Katsumiyo In reply to windything [2012-03-02 22:16:13 +0000 UTC]
I'm...not sure what you mean by that. The inside should be shorter than the outside, and each side on the cone-shaped piece should correspond in length with a side of the triangle.

Not really. Unless you find clips that will hold onto your hair firmly, you'll have to mount them on a headband. But literally 99% of cosplays look better with a wig.

Hi, just wondering about what the dimensions of the ears you made in this tutorial were! I love the design but I think I might have to make mine a little bigger than as shown here.
Thank you for making the tutorial, too. Sometimes it's so hard to find clear-cut ways to make these things!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Katsumiyo In reply to SushiBee [2012-01-17 07:16:48 +0000 UTC]
In that case, you're gonna want to make yours about 2 inches tall and somewhere around two and a quarter to two and a half inches long at the base. But be careful; the size will increase considerably when you add the fur, so don't go overboard. Especially if you're making Horo; in art, her ears are pretty big, but in the show they're not nearly as large...and nothing ruins a good Horo costume like comically large and sloppy ears.

For attaching to ear to the clip, do you need to use E6000, or can you use hot glue just as well?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Katsumiyo In reply to Kapanet [2011-12-12 04:57:37 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't recommend hot glue. It might last for one wear but hot glue doesn't bond well to metal. It might even come off while you're just trying to situate the clip in the wig. But even small tubes of E6000 are less than four dollars, and they go a looong ways.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Katsumiyo In reply to LimeFlavoredAnimer [2011-11-27 23:11:14 +0000 UTC]
Hm! That's a tough one! Probably two sheets of craft foam sandwiching some wire so you could give them a cute partial curl at the base. On one side, grey fleece (or whatever color the fur is) and the other, pink. If you need me to draw a diagram, since it's a little complicated, I'd be happy to.
