Description Warning: Large File xD I have always wanted to write that on one of my tutorials.

Anyways, here it is. My super massive coloring tutorial/walkthrough. If you have ever wondered what materials I use or how I color my furry animals well here you go

Materials that are mentioned (it is not mandatory to use these. you can experiment with other things)
-faber castell polychromos- a hard colored pencil. Some consider it to be the finest brand
-faber castel art grip- a hard colored pencil good for detailing
-Prismacolor- a soft colored pencil
-Derwent colorsoft- a soft color pencil. Colors are very vibrant but they are not good for deailing
-Pearlescent Inks- artist inks that have a nice shine. They can be easily mixed with water to make nice washes.
-FW Acrylic artist Ink- another nice ink that does not have a shinny glow
-gel pen- just your everyday gel pen. Can be purchased at most office stores
-smooth bristol board- a nice smooth paper that I like to use for colored pencil drawings and is nice for inking

That is all I think If you have any questions just feel free to ask.

You have saved me. D:
Just a question, is it ok to use a .2 pen to ink it with? I currently don't have a .3.

Great tutorial.
I do have a question tho.
See I draw just little pictures of pokemon or whatever jusfor fun and to take up time. I'm not very serious about it but I would like to make my pictures look better. I am wondering what the MINIMUM of art supplies I need? The style or whatever its called that I'm looking for is this:
[link]
This persons shading and coloring and stuf is AMAZING and I was wondering if you could tell me what they used and what I need to start experimenting with coloring and stuff. I'm just a beginner and I was looking at an art supply website and I just became so overwhelmed! I need help! so if you could help me i would sooooooo apreciate it! thanks!

Hmm if you want to use this style I would say you need:

1. Bristol board. It is a fabulous paper (and fairly cheap) that allows colored pencils to be applied smoothly
2. A good multiliner pen. I would use a .7 micron or copic pen. The copics are a bit more expensive but they are wonderful and are not prone to smearing.
3. Colored pencils. This is the tricky part. There are many different brands that all have strengths and weaknesses. It really depends on what effect you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend. I have found that the absolute best brand (for me) are faber-castell polychromos. I am guessing that the person who you linked to, probably uses these as well. Another great brand are prismacolor. They are very soft and blendable. Derwent colorsoft are amazing as well. They have vibrant colors and produce very interesting effects.
If you are looking for something a bit cheaper I might go with derwent studio pencils. Or if you look at Dick Blick's online store, they sell a custom brand of colored pencils for very cheap. I have used them before and they seem to be pretty good quality.

As for other supplies (not necessary but still something to think about):
-A good sketching pencil never hurts. I normally just use mechanical
-Kneaded erasers are nice. They lift up portions of a drawing without completely erasing the lines.
-Markers are fun to mix with pencils. They can give the drawing a cool effect. I really love this brand called tombo.
-Watercolors can be fun for backgrounds
-Gel pens are fun too...I use them in a lot of my drawings

I hope this helps!! And if you are looking for a store to order from, I would go with Dick Blick. I think they have a lot of stuff on sale at the moment.

O! Thanks sooo much. I really just needed someone to tell me exactly what I need, that's how I am. So thanks ALOT! I think I will start with one of those pens and some colored pencils because I was using a stupid cheap pen from walmart to outline and it... was not good! And roseart colored pencils we had laying around. And they don't blend... at all. So thanks alot!

Are the dots supposed to be markings or highlights? They look a bit odd for highlights.

Anyways, I love the texture of the fur. ^^

This seems to be more of a step by step presentation than an actual tutorial. I don't see how this could help an artist to improve his skills. This presentation seems to be aimed at the amateurs of the community.

I never quite understand artists that do what hundreds of others are doing (aiming at your subject matter and character design) and then also try to help amateurs to get them to make the exact same things. This whole anime scene is very ill. I see no individuality or real artistic creativity.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatyLipscomb In reply to MartinSilvertant [2009-02-03 21:20:06 +0000 UTC]

Ummmmm......not to be rude but all I was doing with this walkthrough was explaining how I use my materials. It gets very old explaining over and over again how I use materials. I am not particularly trying to help others "improve", am just offering another way to use materials. There are hundreds of ways to use materials *shrug*

Really, people just asked me to make a walkthrough and so I did. I really don't understand why you are so bothered.

But thank you for input.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MartinSilvertant In reply to KatyLipscomb [2009-02-03 23:00:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm not bothered; I simply don't understand why people share their style with the community. You should develop your style and keep your techniques to yourself so you can stay unique. I think most people that make tutorials aren't really interested in helping others to improve, but rather do it for recognition, admiration and attention. It's everyone's choice to do so, but I don't understand it. I strive for individuality.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatyLipscomb In reply to MartinSilvertant [2009-02-03 23:07:08 +0000 UTC]

Ah I see^^ No I'm not doing it for recognition or anything xD Really I wasn't even expecting to get so many faves on it 0.o I just posted it for a couple people who were wondering how I use my colored pencils.
I think I understand what you mean though. A lot of artists seam to get stuck in a rut drawing the same kinds of things over and over again (I know that I am guilty of that)
