Description
my shading is nowhere near realistic but i do that on purpose, not aiming to be realistic
the normal version isn’t realistic either, it’s just it’s plain and i used to shade that way and the pics weren’t so lively

shading isn't one of my strong points, I'm getting better at it but you make it look easy and the difference between the two is really great

well your shading is actually more realistic, because you keep in mind that lightning and shadow aren't just black and white
you use very saturated colors, that's what makes it unrealistic, but I really like that
It gives this wonderful fantasy feeling :3

I always liked your shading, but could never really put my finger on it. Now I know why; your style of shading is a lot more vibrant, colourful, and almost warm, even.

Love how you did the apple! In a way, it looks like the apple is more vibrant/alive the way you shaded it!

Its nice, but I'd say it all relies on the type of light that is shining on the object, blue light, red light, yellow light, white light, etc.

As I understand it, "realistic" shading is not composed out of a single hue either, as colors interact with each other and their environment, lightings, and such... But you know.

yeah, honestly its seems extremely arrogant of OP to shade something poorly, call it "realistic" shading, then shade something as it should be, and slap on a label of his/her name like a trade secret

Well, knowing it is one thing, but being able to do it is another. I myself am not nearly as good as this even though I "know" how a realistic painting should be. Art is, after all, a technical skill...

Agreed, but I think knowing is more than half the battle in almost all elements of art. It's just a matter of keeping it at the front of your mind whenever you're picking highlights and shadows. I think I worded it wrong when I said OP shaded it "poorly". OP is obviously able to do realistic colored lighting, but he does it intentionally unrealistically and calls accepted practice his own style

Not that it matters, but I'm fairly certain English isn't kawacy's first language. If something sounds "arrogant" or simply poorly worded, I would blame it on that

I prefer the normal shading on the apple, but it's amazing how your way of shading seems to breathe life into the skin shading, and makes it appear so much more alive and vibrant, in contrast to the normal skin shading, which looks dull and flat. Thanks for pointing out these differences, and sharing this technique with us!

people figured out the shadows tend to be more blue-ish and highlights tend to be more yellow-ish ever since renaissance, this is nothing new... lovely coloring though, you're really talented, noone can take that from you keep it up

There is no "normal" shading, unless you are sticking with a strick one-light type of scene. In fact, your shading is what students studying art are encouraged to explore. Lights give so much to an ordinary object!

looks like sprite shading really, a fair style, the other is (digital) photo-realistic, and naturalistic/painterly realism has the midtones as the most saturated color with the highlight and shadow mass being less saturated. Each method has its boons, and busts.
