Sorry it's a little squished together. I wanted a one-pager,but underestimated the amount of space it would take...lll
It's a tutorial best suited for beginner~intermediate learners
and a great revision of my old Cell CG tutorial (which is a lot
simpler, but this one is a good memory refresher for me~).
Do feel free to share it anywhere.

very helpful.... but im having trouble with the 1st step. xD how do you get the lineart to be JUST lineart.
when i scan my stuff, i get the 'white' of the paper. i cant figure out how to get that checkerboard bg. waaahh!!!!

you can't get that checkerboard bg unless you draw the lineart on the computer on a new layer.

i tried to figure out photoshop o.o all i knew how to use is the gradient tool, so i switched to sai, but i dont know how to use sai either so im stuck.... oAo
my school has photoshop so now i can try it out :3

will it work if i use a MS Paint picture???

If you have Photoshop, MS Paint might be able to save the file to a PSD file (Save as > PSD) and you can open such files with Photoshop.
Otherwise you'll just have to erase all the whites from the picture manually.

For me, grouping doesn't work the way you explained it. I tried grouping in hopes that when I drew it would stay within the same boundaries as the other grouped layer but it didn't. I hope i'm just doing it wrong >w< and not that photoshop has changed it's preferences.
