Description
Winter Wrap Up is coming, and in Ponyville every able bodied stallion and mare must do their part. Tradition demands that citizens do without magic, and just in case you forgot, posters plastered all over town drive the point home - Use Hooves, Not Horns, and wrap up winter the earth pony way.---
Someone requested that I do an homage to Abram Games' Use Spades, Not Ships with ponies. [link] The original poster, commissioned by Her Majesty's Stationery Office, implored British citizens to grow their own food and rely on domestic production, rather than having food and supplies shipped to the island nation. Ships were vulnerable to German U-boat attack, and countless tons of food were lost to sunk ships. The message was effective, and Britain's increased self-reliance helped them through the war.

That is because it's an homage to a WW2 poster, specifically an English one called Use Spades, Not Ships. I talked about it in the description.

We have been late on winter wrap over thousands of year, i don't know what is wrong we have the Earth ponys plow and the pegasi moving clouds, and the unicorns are force to move everything without using magic. "how we always late". i hated the idea from ponyville in that episode magic has been involved just as long as earth and pegasi, Mean the old fashion way CAN have magic. if unicorns can't use magic why can the pegasi fly? Been late for so many years it not like your putting a handicap on 1/3 of you town. Sorry this is the one episode i will fight on music great but i hate the logic on this episode

I actually addressed this in an earlier comment, reposted for your convenience.
It's not something that was lost on me. I don't think it really occurs to the ponies that winged flight is magic or possibly magic-assisted. Even then the pegasi are the only ones that could reasonably clear the sky anyway. All the other tasks involved in winter wrap-up can be done without magic (even Rarity's nest making).
Plus, clearing all those clouds is hard work, the pegasi can't just magic them away in an instant. Same with bringing back the birds. The point is to roll up their metaphorical sleeves and get down and dirty to clean up the town with hard work... which is kind of the same sentiment of the original work. Instead of relying on ships that are at risk, Britons hunkered down and helped shore up their own food production at home. It's an interesting parallel.

Thanks, I'm trying to combine a few techniques here with this one. I wanted to keep a sort of old-school coarse airbrush look. I experimented with it in Somepony Talked! and the Mare-Do-Well poster but those weren't very coarse, more blendy than anything. You can sort of see the same kind of stuff, but it's more subtle in those pieces.
I try to combine the speckly brush with a brush I call "the magic brush" to do layers of the texture. I'm still learning a lot and most of it is trial and error but I do feel I've gotten better at it since my first stab. I used to use the magic brush exclusively for painting (see Make Some Friends) but I found that to be limiting. The magic brush has this kind of opacity falloff with a hairy texture. Feels very crayon-y.
These old-school style posters were often airbrushed with mixed materials to create stark images based on flat colors. I tried a different take with FOREVER which used a very hard magic brush to work in the hairy texture. I've been trying to combine both of them together, with some success and often failure. I really like the aesthetic of airbrush on construction paper, for instance, and that's what I'm usually going for with these. The next one I might experiment with waves or square patterns.

One thing I never got from that episode, is that they use Pegasus ponies to change the weather, but Twilight can't use her magic.

I must say I really like the original poster! As it is, this one has ponies in it, so that makes it a lot better of course .
So uhh what I'm trying to say is, Nice work!
And I really hope they wrap up winter here soon... I've seen and felt more then enough of it after one day already.

I like this.
It's got a sort of...WWII propaganda poster feel to it, though the message isn't "buy war bonds" or "loose lips sink ships," it's "work smart."
Jolly good, sir!

Well, it's a take on another WW2 poster, but it's not American, it's from England.
