Description
After getting a lot of requests for "What color is that thing?" I decided to put together complete color guides for the new My Little Pony TV show characters. They're intended for informational purposes only and are produced independently. In some cases the swatches are researched from the official artwork. When that's not available, I used some analysis and my swatch libraries to get within a reasonable Delta-E.Remember to download the attached PDF file and use that for reference. Do not use the preview PNG for reference material, it's intended only for preview on DeviantArt.
This guide discusses a complete color palette for season one Princess Luna. Luna's colors were hard to decide on, because most of the options I was picking from printed color guides in overprint preview were producing something that was not to my liking in terms of differences from everything we have available on Luna. In the end, I felt the best result was to pick the best values in sRGB colorspace and let the cards fall where they may, since most users are probably just eyedropping these things anyway. Without some insight from the person who actually chose these colors in the first place, there's only so much reverse engineering can do.
Note that Luna's palette has changed consdierably in Season 2. Until I get a new color guide up, read the following journal post for more information. [link]
The intent of using a standard color library (Pantone Solid Coated) is to stay within the bounds of said official artwork, plus give some consistency to colors used. This should help when sourcing supplies for non-digital work. If your application does not support color libraries, then using the eyedropper on the swatch should give you an answer. However, this means you lose the more accurate simulations available by using Overprint preview mode.
This guide is not affiliated with Hasbro in any way and is produced solely in the interest of color science. For a changelog, more long-winded explanations, and other discussions, see this forum topic: [link]

Thank you so so so much for these. So many color guides are just little bubbles of color that are completely useless to people like me who have color blindness. This helps so much. Again, thank you for this.

Surprisingly, Luna refs seem to be a rare occurrence on the interwebz... How strange. Oh well . Thanks for the super-awesome refsheet!

Thank you for sharing this fantastic reference! I have to say - I just finished making a S1 Luna plush, and it seriously irked my perfectionist nature that her crown and armor are two different colors. Couldn't bring myself to use two different colors this time, but I might next time for the sake of accuracy. Even if it's right, it will still look wrong to me - ack!

The fill of the crown is the same color as the armor, but their strokes outlining them are different. I don't know why they did it this way but the new S2 color scheme does not have this problem.

Thanks for the clarification. I should have checked the numbers. The impression from the outline strokes plays tricks on my eyes. Good thing I didn't make them two different colors, haha!

The S2 guide is in the works, it's being ported to the new color guide format. If you put me on your watch list you'll know when it's available.

I know this will proabally make me sound noobish but how exactly does one get the PANTONE Colors? I am using Corel Painter 12 and Gimp if that helps. Thanks in advance.

Painter doesn't have them, probably. You can just eye drop the swatches from the guide.

I used this and the Princess Celestia one to make this [link] although I admit, I played a bit loose with the colours to get them to work with the other elements. Thank you for providing these guides; they've been really helpful!

I need to say that whoever chose the colours for Luna (i.e. in the show itself), his choices weren't too fortunate. Strokes in her hair blend almost totally with her coat, strokes in her chestplate blend too much with the fill colour of it, strokes of the crown blend too much with the fill colour of the hair, and it's pretty stupid how the crown and the chestplate have different stroke colours.
Because of such things, I practically spent 4-6 hours trying to redesign Luna's colours in order to have a decent base for my Luna-related artwork (see examples here: [link] ).

It is what it is... personally, Luna doesn't need to have strong contrasts between a lot of her colors, because in the night you often lose a lot of contrast anyway, and, well, she is a creature of the night after all.
We'll see if she gets any tweaks in her upcoming episode!

From someone who draws a lot of our favourite Moon Princess, I bid thee a Thank You. This is going to find use as I'm going to get me a graphics tablet in week or two, shifting my colouring more towards the digital side

Might it also be possible for a Nightmare Moon color guide? Also, you are amazing for putting these together, I can't wait to work with them tomorrow!
