Description New and improved!

All of the color guides are getting a revamp. The guides are all now two pages, one for digital applications (such as vectors, painting in Photoshop, 3D modeling, etc) and the other for print applications (customs, merch, T-shirts, et cetera). The PNG preview for the digital guide should be OK to use as well, so the PDF is optional.

If you use Google Chrome or Safari, they will attempt to open the file in-line with Google Docs PDF viewer. DO NOT EYEDROP THOSE COLORS. SAVE THE PDF FILE. The Google Docs viewer displays in a very low bit depth that results in dithering of the colors. Until Deviantart gives me a way to disable this, you should use the download file link to view the guide!

They are also now more space efficient, and will be able to scale better with ponies that have more colors than normal.

The Digital guides aim to be as close to the show as possible, while the print guides aim to be as close to official merch as possible. When there's no merch of that pony (e.g. background ponies) then the print colors will be based on my conversions which will aim to reproduce the show without looking too weird or have obvious gamut problems.

It is safe to eyedrop the digital colors or use the hex/RGB codes - the swatches should match up just fine. Just make sure you're working in sRGB color mode.

For the merch guides, the spot colors are rendered using CMYK alternate color space. This is based on my own examinations of the merch boxes, where the spot colors are simulated straight to process anyway.

Your guides are great! Glad I found them now before trying to do too much. I went through the color-search process for making a vector of Cadance and Shining Armor and know how tricky it can be. O_o
Keep up the good work! We all appreciate the effort you put into these.

I thought the eyes were only that color because they were blue shifted o3o

I am writing a very long thing about this. You'll probably see it up on journal soon enough.

Speaking about the Eye:
The canon color is in the Royal Wedding DJ Flash game. It's Magneta.
If you want the exact value: It's a gradient of 229C to 675C (Pantone color)

I've seen it, they're identical to Dash's eyes.

I wish you had added the eye gradients. Even if they weren't official. I want to get a good looking red.

Her eye colors are fanon. If they ever show up in the show, I'll be sure to add them.

Yeah. That's why I didn't expect you to add the colours. Anyways, I came up with my own. Check it out if you want [link]

Is it ok if i use this for my art project as getting her normal colors is impossible with only using screenshots, please.

Oh wow. This looks much better than what I supposed her colors were. Mine seem too bright/vivid compared to this. I may go back and change them now.

While I'm all for accuracy, I think that a large portion of the fan base will still continue to use her mistaken colors. They are very attractive with her design in my opinion. Maybe in time, everyone will lean towards these.

The colors that Scratch shows up in the show are perfectly fine - if she's in a dark/night environment.

Knowing the original colors means you can modify them to your liking for whatever lighting you want to use.

True. I prefer to represent ponies in their natural/default colors though. Or as close to them as I can get given my poor eyesight.

I appreciate the work you've put into these guides. They're definitely helpful as you've no doubt been told countless times.

Why isnt her mane a full color?

kefkafloyd In reply to CatsInBlack [2011-08-20 01:51:33 +0000 UTC]

What do you mean? Scratch always had a two-tone mane and tail.

If you're referring to dithering, blame the google docs PDF viewer that DeviantArt thought would be helpful, but isn't. Download the file and enjoy.

Wow, that was quick! I hope that it was easier to deal with the image as shapes instead of that dumb method I was using originally.

Let me know sometime if you wanted to do any other characters. These color guides are a boon to people like me so anything I can do to contribute to their creation is something I am more than happy to help with.

With shape layers, I can basically open up the PSD in Illustrator and it gives it to me with no questions asked. Don't even need to export anything, I can just go and start fixing fills.

At this point we'd just be going through background ponies (NMM should be next on the list, I guess). Then Lyra, Bon-bon, Octavia, Big Mac, et cetera. So, if there's anything you want to see a guide of, just send it my way and it'll get done.

I was thinking Nightmare Moon would be a great addition since you've done Celestia and Luna already. I'll have to convert her into shapes so I'll try to get that to you some time this week; I've got a lot of other work going on and I'm sure you do, too.

I don't really have many background ponies created (I think the only two I've even made are Octavia and Cheerilee) but I definitely hope to do more so I can basically send anything your way if you want it once I do get to them.

I *do* have Owlowicous, Winona, Opalescence and Angel Bunny made if you wanted to do a pet set or something. (Gummy would round out the set, although the only one I have of him right now is the one where he is biting Pinkie Pie's tail so I'd have to make one of him where he isn't partially obscured.)

Oh, and one thing I keep wanting to ask you and I always forget : could you please provide something for their mouth colors, like the teeth outline, tongue and cheek colors? I hate having to sample those from screenshots while using your color guides for all the rest of the colors so that would be a really great addition.

So yeah, let me know if you're interested in doing any of that.

Cool! That would be nice to have a full color guide set of all the pets. I don't know if KefkaFloyd was interested in doing them or not, though.

Also, we can certainly do NMM / Octavia / Cheerilee when time/resources permit.

Teeth lines: Pantone 290 C

Mouth: Pantone 219 C

Tongue: Pantone 164 C

These are probably not 100% the same as source due to generational loss but they're within the ballpark and I bet nobody would notice.

Nice! I've noticed that since this is textured, its a bit difficult to grab the precise color using a dropper tool though.

kefkafloyd In reply to ClickityHack [2011-08-02 23:05:54 +0000 UTC]

It's a flaw with this dag-nabbed Google PDF previewer. It uses a very low bit depth. You should download the original PDF file and open it in Photoshop or another program to rasterize it. Then eyedrop off of that.

It used to use my preview PNGs, but I can't seem to find a way to turn this thing off.

ClickityHack In reply to kefkafloyd [2011-08-03 00:12:23 +0000 UTC]

Why would a PDF previewer load PNG's? Can't you just snap a screen shot in GIMP or Photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to ClickityHack [2011-08-03 01:21:16 +0000 UTC]

DeviantArt used to use a PNG preview for PDF files (and which I still provide). Now they've started using this inline previewer for the PDF file instead of the PNG preview in certain browsers (Chrome, Safari). If I can find a way to disable this, I'll try.

When I said download the PDF and open it in Photoshop, that means it will rasterize it to whatever size you want. At this point, if you have one of those other browsers, the PNG preview I made (which has a very large FOR PREVIEW ONLY banner across the middle of the image) is now irrelevant. Unfortunately, these auto-previews Deviantart is generating are worse than my supplied previews because the viewer reduces bit depth.
