Description New and improved!

All of the color guides are getting a revamp. The guides are all now two pages, one for digital applications (such as vectors, painting in Photoshop, 3D modeling, etc) and the other for print applications (customs, merch, T-shirts, et cetera). The PNG preview for the digital guide should be OK to use as well, so the PDF is optional.

If you use Google Chrome or Safari, they will attempt to open the file in-line with Google Docs PDF viewer. DO NOT EYEDROP THOSE COLORS. SAVE THE PDF FILE. The Google Docs viewer displays in a very low bit depth that results in dithering of the colors. Until Deviantart gives me a way to disable this, you should use the download file link to view the guide!

They are also now more space efficient, and will be able to scale better with ponies that have more colors than normal.

The Digital guides aim to be as close to the show as possible, while the print guides aim to be as close to official merch as possible. When there's no merch of that pony (e.g. background ponies) then the print colors will be based on my conversions which will aim to reproduce the show without looking too weird or have obvious gamut problems.

It is safe to eyedrop the digital colors or use the hex/RGB codes - the swatches should match up just fine. Just make sure you're working in sRGB color mode.

For the merch guides, the spot colors are rendered using CMYK alternate color space. This is based on my own examinations of the merch boxes, where the spot colors are simulated straight to process anyway.

Just for those having trouble in inkscape, just type the code and FF at the end.

Or, just copy the # with it. You don't need to do anything special.

I'm a little confused...
Why are there two pages of Vinyl Scratch? I noticed one palette is more yellow than the other so I'm a little confused on which to use

kefkafloyd In reply to Leapingriver [2013-06-11 02:37:31 +0000 UTC]

One palette is the "digital" or screen guide, while the other is the print guide. If all you're doing is stuff on screen, then the digital one is the way to go. If you plan on printing or want to be closer to the merch palettes, then the print one is the way to go.

Some colors do not reproduce well when used in print, and in some cases Hasbro/DHX has different palettes. The "digital" palette is derived from flash assets, while the "print" palette is derived from printed assets.

Fudlite In reply to ArcusWind [2012-12-22 07:48:30 +0000 UTC]

Just convert each hex value to decimal:

#0099FF is 00, 99 and FF when split up.

00 = 0,
99 = 153,
FF = 255.

Therefore, #0099FF in decimal RGB = 0, 153, 255.

Hex is generally easier as you can represent it in string form without the need for delimiters, and it's shorter to write overall.

kefkafloyd In reply to ArcusWind [2012-12-19 21:29:01 +0000 UTC]

The hex values are just another way of expressing RGB instead of 255/255/255 notation. They are still RGB colors.

kefkafloyd In reply to ArcusWind [2012-12-19 23:25:25 +0000 UTC]

I am unfamiliar with Inkscape. People keep asking me this, maybe I need to try it just so I can answer questions. But I'd find it highly unlikely that their RGB color picker couldn't accept hex notation.

Yay! Vinyl Scratch is best background pony! I needed a color guide like this...I was trying to make my own, but it isn't easy. Then I realized my colors were all wrong, so I had to keep remaking my own Vinyl palette...this makes drawing Vinyl 20% easier! Thank you SOSO much for this!

BB-K [2012-08-19 18:07:54 +0000 UTC]

red stands out a lot better actually in terms of visuals, that's what I as a former graphics student would comment. In this case, my theory is probably the purple is some sort of colored contact lenses.

TSWT In reply to BB-K [2012-11-29 02:03:35 +0000 UTC]

it's not purple it's a really vibrant fuschia. your monitor is probably not calibrated properly.

BB-K In reply to TSWT [2012-11-29 02:52:04 +0000 UTC]

Err no, what people say it's purple is because it's a simple word in general, way more general than magenta.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TSWT In reply to BB-K [2012-11-29 02:56:01 +0000 UTC]

well okay :I I never heard anyone call that colour 'purple' before is all.

anyway maybe they're contacts, but just look at RD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BB-K In reply to TSWT [2012-11-29 02:59:21 +0000 UTC]

RD is fixed as far as fans say. Fans gave Vinyl red while the crew made magenta.

So my theory is that her red eyes must be from some colored contact lenses while her eyes are originally magenta. Well, maybe she doesn't want to stand out so much to other people looking to date with her. I think.

RD's eyes have no problem anyway since Vinyl's eyes was not seen that time.

great color guide, might use it in the future if I ever decide to draw ponies again (or color my damn drawings for that matter XD)

also, there sure is a lot of shit going on about Scratch's eye-colors, eh? = P

I do believe the colors Studio B has selected is the color you have provided, and is the same as used for 'Dash and several other ponies.

All I want is for an "Alt" set of colors for Vinyl's eyes, for people who want their vector to have the fanon red color.

If you really don't want to do that, then I.. I guess making up a color will have to suffice...

First time vectoring ponies and haven't used Photoshop in a long time so I'm going to ask a question that might seem pretty simple to others who have been vectoring for a while... What are turning down on the body fill/body fill shadow (15%)? Is it the saturation?

Awesome color guide by the way, gradient components and everything .

There will be a new

My advice is to import the PDF into Photoshop then use the eyedropper to read the color from the swatch.
