Description
Oil on canvas: 16" X 20"This is an idea for a painting that I decided to finish and show. I like the idea better than the painting.
11/11/15: I have decided to "enable" this image for printing. I had intended to do a second version of this painting that corrects its mistakes, but I cannot be sure when the second painting will be finished.
1/19/16 I finished the revised and (hopefully) improved version of this painting: fav.me/d9omhig I will leave this version up for now.

Glen Cook. had a novel, I believe it was called Passage of Arms, if I'm not mistaken. It had a ships cat in it. This reminds me of that. Nice Work

Hey, I really wish I could buy a print of this art for my brother's bday, but I can't find a way to do it. Am I really bad at finding things on the internet or is it impossible?
Btw your paintings are incredible! Love them

It should be available here on DA or over on Redbubble. I will drop the $1 fee for a download for a couple days if you would prefer to do that and run a copy off your printer.

This will sound a little weird but a couple weeks ago I had an idea for a story that I started, just a short paragraph, but it is almost exactly what you portray in this painting. Although I didn't know of you or your work when the idea struck me it gave me goosebumps because of how similar the concepts are. Cheers!

Cool! I suspect that the idea behind the painting is one that a lot of artists and writers would eventually stumble across and develop...kind of like a bunch of people inventing the airplane at the same time. To be honest, I am a little surprised that nobody else thought of it first....or maybe they did and got lost in the shuffle. Good luck on the story!

I appreciate the 1970s look to it. Like something out of Space Odyssey.

Go on! I guess that especially on long ways, animals would be great for emotional support and wellbeing of crew. On other hand, it would have to be low mainteance animal, to be able to survive changing conditions, dont take too much resources and dont stink, so the candidate list would be narrow...

Perhaps has the technology advances, more and more animals will be recruited to join the adventure. I am currently trying to come up with an idea that my pet bird (green-cheeked conure) can pose for. I think she would do well as an astro-bird.

Do you think birds would be able to fly in zero g?

Keithspangle In reply to Lady-Pilot [2017-11-29 15:01:18 +0000 UTC]
I think they could learn how. Kaylee's wings are clipped, so she uses me as her mode of transportation and is an agile climber. She also loves to play with/destroy things that I am using, like remote controls for the TV and the computer mouse, so I am not sure what kind of havoc she would create aboard a starship.

I guess that climbing would be more effective than flying, because if Im not mistaken (im miserable physicist), birds fly because of uplift force and if I remember correctly, its gravity dependent...

Keithspangle In reply to Lady-Pilot [2017-11-29 15:30:38 +0000 UTC]
Yes: there needs to be a downward force balanced and manipulated with the lift generated by the wings. A bird in micro-gee would find her instincts useless and would , I guess, have to learn how to "swim" through the air. I suspect that the parrot related birds would be quick to adjust as they are very intelligent.

In the end, you can always assume that the space travelers have invented artificial gravity or that they travel in ships that have spinning hulls or a constant acceleration to create gravity. As a visual artist, my job is to come up with an attractive and believable image. It might be fun, however, to show a human flying across a compartment in zero-gee being accompanied by a flock of parakeets, canaries, parrots and macaws.

I agree on both points, one cannot travel too long without Gs and handle the landing afterwards

They have also discovered that too long at zero g and your brain starts to displace inside your skull.
