Description
Taken from a slide. This was a piece I did back in the 80's. I showed this previously(and won a DD) in a previous DA incarnation. It was oil on masonite, 24" X 48"music: [link]

Wow! So you are one of the guys that did this old school Science Fiction art back in the day. I always loved this old stuff.

I used to go to bookstores and buy stuff for the covers. Interestingly enough, I discovered that if I liked the cover I would generally like the book itself.

Back then if you wanted to paint Science-fiction themes you had to be an illustrator: the regular art world didn't take sci-fi seriously

That was a shame. sci-fi has always been one of my favorite subjects in art. I have a huge collection
of sci-fi novels many of many of which I got just for the cover art.

I think it is accepted more these days. My biggest problem is competing with the work done by the computer graphics people for the movies! Sometimes I feel like a Neanderthal who has just met a tribe of Cro-Magnons

I like the new computer art that people are doing today.
But I still really like the old traditional stuff to.

It really dose have an 1980s feel about it, which I would imagine you where inspired by.

I can't quite recall who was inspiring me back when I painted this. Probably Jack Vance and Roger Zelazny, but I have been reading their stuff all my life. Maybe I should try to figure it out: my current work is technically much better, but lacks the magic I felt back then.

Indeed, but it is nice to see how your artwork has progressed.

I need to regain some of that old idealism and magic. Maybe play some old music and spend more time with the hummingbirds in the back yard.

Maybe, but it is usually caused by living in that area and it being all around you.

Maybe I should start a series of hummingbird paintings . I have tons of pictures of the little guys...might as well make them earn all that nectar I've been making for them.

And it was this piece that drew me to you in the first place. *faves it again*

That's a cool one, I really like space and sci-fi stuff.
You did a great job on this back then and I am looking forward to see your new master pieces

Big problem now is a conspicuous lack of gumption, but I'm working on it!
