Description I had a stamp almost exactly like this uploaded back on !Heiderich-Luvur but it got lost when I was moving all my crap over here.

So I made another one because I think that this really needs to be said.

Those who don't like slash often use this as their primary argument -- the idea that changing the sexuality of a character changes the character entirely. A person's sexuality should never be a part of their personality, just as a person's hair color, ethnicity, religion or gender shouldn't define them.

Some say that that's the opposite, and yes, it's true that some personality traits are attributed to the above things, such as blonds being stupid, Christians being bigoted, girls being sensitive, and Asians being smart.

However, these stereotypes are often the exception rather than the rule. There are dumb blondes, yes, but there are very smart ones. And very dumb brunettes. There are wonderfully open-minded Christians and very close-minded atheists. I've known girls who want nothing to do with love and boys that cry at Disney movies.

So saying that, for example, making Superman gay for Batman, is changing both of their characters entirely is, in fact, a very false statement. Gay or straight, Clark Kent would still save the day. He would still work at the Daily Planet and have a secret identity. He would still be idealist and moral, wanting nothing more than the good of the world. Bruce Wayne, no matter his sexuality, would still be darker and more mysterious. He would still be as precise and angsty as he always was. And, furthermore, whether their relationship was friendly or romantic, the two heroes would pretty much still interact in the same way. Bruce would be cynical of Clark's idealist nature and Clark would always be trying to get Bruce to be more optimistic, just as they're doing for each other now. We both know that the characters are capable of love, thanks to Rachel (in Nolan-verse) and Lois. So there would be no character change whatsoever with Bruce/Clark slash.

Of course, there will always be those who change the character's personalities within their slash, and I'm not speaking for those people. We all know that Rorschach won't be leaving roses on Dan's doorstep, and Envy will probably never cuddle with Ed. That's a different situation, and that exists in het, too.

But saying that slash isn't even possible because it changes the personality of the characters is an erroneous thought process. I wouldn't be a different person if I was straight. I would still like the same things I like now. I would just be attracted to men rather than women.

So, to put it bluntly, 'gay' is not a personality trait.

Uh, that's why fanfiction exists, like you said. If they're gonna make the characters not straight, then let them. The creators won't even care any other way.

Your comment came off as if fan-preferred yaoi/yuri couples are a personal attack to the creators.

I'm not big on slash personally but it's crazy for so fans to claim it's cannon and then yell at you when you disagree. I don't really understand Draco/Harry anyway, they're enemies and basically hate each other so why would they become a couple?

Now in my case if it's a hero x villain ship I kinda have to change a bit of character but in a good way.

...Except 9 times out of 10, it does. Slash and yaoi are not about gay rights, they are about sex, romance, and more sex. Friendship is completely devalued, as is familial love. Somehow, there is only one kind of love that matters. And it basically revolves around hormones.

I feel so alone in my platonic relationships... Why must 99% of fanfiction be like that...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rababco In reply to The-Max765 [2016-11-07 07:08:55 +0000 UTC]

That's a lot about how I feel. Platonic relationships, like friendship and family-like relationships are no longer important. It's not even just about slash either, even hetero pairings can do that. For example, one of favorite things about NCIS is that they are like a family and I especially love Gibbs and Abby father-daughter-like relationship and Gibbs and Tony's father-son-like relationship but I've come across both being romantic/sexual, which I think is really gross because I've always seen both of them like parent-child, even if they aren't actually related. Then there's Steve and Bucky from the Captain America movies and lots of fans like to ship them but I've always seen them like adoptive brothers and that's not evenΒ super gross like Thor x Loki who actually are adoptive brothers. I don't like Steve x Natasha because I've always just seen them as good friends.

I'm not really sure how slash is about gay rights and representation. I do think there should be more representation but I don't think slash is the way to do it. To me, it feel like it's sending the message that people can change their sexuality, which isn't true, but maybe other people see it differently. Plus, they talk about representation but I feel like Johnlock is kind of acephobic because Sherlock is one of the few characters who is strongly suggested to be asexual and they're shoving him in a gay relationship with John (this is also why I don't like Sherlock in straight relationships either). If they really cared about representation they wouldn't do that.

But i hate it when my fellow yaoi fans make the characters ooc, just so it could be "kawaii" //sigh

You know what's a worse problem?

"Characters" in RPs
who have their entire personality
displayed in a menu that goes like this:

funny,cute,kind,etc.

that's not a character- that's a mindless
automaton programmed to respond to those only

It gets even worse when the player doesn't even
RP like those traits.

I write mostly about same sex couples a lot and still try to keep the canon characters in character. I remember reading this really good Shizuo+Izaya fanfic once for example and I was pretty impressed how well, the author kept those two in character ^^ Sometimes that can be very...difficult to do .___. But anywho: I really agree with your stamp There are some that even dare to say that slashing two male or female characters together is an 'insult to the author ' -__-

True, but I still prefer if straight characters stay straight, and gay characters stay gay.

Though to be fair, I like to portray Tails from the Sonic series as gay. And no, he doesn't have a crush on Sonic in my head-universe, he still treats Sonic as an older brother and nothing more. He's just into boys instead of girls.

regates [2013-03-27 01:32:26 +0000 UTC]

exactly, I have some OCs that are gay, and some that are bi, and I started to develop some, but didn't think about their sexuality for a long time, until it was important to the story, which is bad, I should fix that at some point, but it's not like I was like, 'oh he's (insert stereotype about gay men here) so I think I'll make him gay.' nooo, that's different and now that I've gotten better at taking into things like sexuality for my OCS, if I feel they're gay then they're gay, or bi, or straight, but I'm not going to change them to fit the story, that's stupid. And it's the same for slash pairs, which I do, I'm not going to support a pair unless I think it's based on something that could be factual, and even if it's not and I'm having fun, it doesn't change the person, you work with what you have, that's how it goes. rant over, sorry about that.

Slashing shouldn't change a character's personality. Which is sad I see men suddenly becoming teenage girls when I take a quick trip through slash works every so often, like you mentioned. I think this is what people mean when they throw that card down and don't want people slashing characters, because of the reputation caused by people who do that sort of thing and warp character's entire personalities. That's really annoying.

It's really the same with het though, too. When characters encounter a Mary Sue and suddenly change into entirely different people.

I love you for this stamp, I work hard to keep characters in character in my slash. I hate when people turn a character into a complete and utter woman. Such as Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy...I don't care if he's pretty, or if he's gay(and of course he's not, in canon), he's not a woman!

It's one of the many things that bother me, when I go to look for slash between Vincent and Cid, or Batman and Superman, I expect them to ACT like Batman and Superman. Anyway, I agree with you, and I love this stamp so much!

Well said and thought out essay.

Over history, there have a been a lot of homosexual characters in fiction and mythology (greek mythology goes without saying) who have been 'straightened out' by cultures at large. Their gay exploits were all but destroyed out of pure straight up bigotry. But slash is an entirely different case. The original author's work is still out there for anyone to enjoy if they want to. But I really love the concept of fanfiction and fan art, every person putting their own spin on characters and stories and telling them their own way. A gay version of Batman is in no way a negative or 'hurts' the imaginary bullshit integrity of a character. It's just a different interpretation.
