Title from the e.e. cummings poem 'maggy and milly and molly and may'From a series of test shots and time exposures, mostly with my dance models who seem to instinctively understand the concept and have ideas how to work with it. I have several from this photo session I'd like to share.
Average exposures for these range from 1 to 3 seconds, depending on how energetic the wind and waves are. Usually done at dusk with tripod, low ISO, neutral density filter, and small aperture.

Now this is a good way of using an ND filter. I like the addition of a person in the water.

Thanks! I'm using the Bower variable neutral density filter. I was a little skeptical at first but it's outstanding, and less expensive than the standard type. I looked at several versions and turns out they're made by same manufacturer and marked up depending on who packages and sells them.

Thanks! Yes, I continue to refine my technique. In this case the waves swirling around the model in the long exposure caused the model to move a little more than I considered ideal. I want a little softness of course for the ethereal look I'm after.

Ah okay - that explains it and makes the achievement only the more impressive. I could only see the solution to take two pictures with different apertures as close to each other as possible and then to overlay them - that would make for a crisp picture of the model and would leave the softness of the water. Could be tricky to get this one done properly and with reasonable effort. But then, the water could be fast enough to do it in one shot ... it is tricky to judge a picture from the small screen of the camera.

One can feel your fascination with the subject matter in the outcome. There are many photos out there, there are not too many though who radiate so much live and warmth the same time. Fuzzy it might be, beautiful it is!

What a superb photo that complements cummings' poem. Maggie, Millie, Molly and May had their various experiences on the shore but after all of that was done, they would find themselves in the figurative sea. I suspect the sea is a metaphor for Freud's feeling of the oceanic, i.e., unbounded oneness with the universe. Or I could be completely off base.
