Description For Pigments used with paint (specifically here is acrylic).

All paint used was made by GOLDEN and colors mentioned in the tutorial can be found here: [link]
Secondary Palette is from this guy: [link]
In this section: [link]
Found here: [link]
Also, same dude, same site different section, has the bible of color comprehension, without which I would be crawling in the dark, if you care at all about color at least have a look, this tutorial wouldn't exist without it: [link]

Also, MJR is how I sign my paintings which are over at

Thank you everyone who has the patience and passion to read through all my business on color

(also, does anyone else think it's lame that all tutorials are for software, and none are for just, traditional art technique and understanding in general?)

You know, I wouldn't give up my teachers at school for anything. They're good teachers...but you're right, they're not physicists, and while they all knew something was off, we never really got into this...so I've been looking for something that explains this. Thank you so much for posting this. I seriously cannot thank you enough.

Wow, hey you're welcome. It's been a while since I've come by this account, and some of my opinions and understandings have changed since I made this tutorial, but it's gotten a lot of positive response so I'm really happy about that.

I agree, I've made my way into an honest to god art school (I'm going to even be an RA next year) and my teachers have been beyond fantastic and understanding and helpful. I think there are limits to what they can tell me that will expand my understanding, especially in such a subjective field as art (I also think that multiple opinions and views add much to one's own realization of their work) but there is a lot of solid information there that I wouldn't be able to get otherwise.

I feel like I probably need to update this tutorial (it's been a while, and I think some of my data isn't entirely up to par, though I'll need to read it through to see) but I do recall having a lot of fun putting it together. It's a learning process for me as well (in as much as I've been able to understand the physics of color, the aesthetics and harnessing the ability to put things next to each other that will look good is still something I stuggle with) but I feel like sharing that learning in an evolving fashion may be just as helpful as information garnered straight from the experts (also I'm a firm believer that those who are not naturally gifted, which I don't percieve myself to be, tend to be better teachers, because once they've overcome their obstacles they know what they needed to do because they witnessed it, and can more readily bring that to others, rather than simply thinking "I can do it, why can't you?" they'll be likely to say "well when I was in your shoes, what did I need to do to figure it all out?")

Anyway, I'm sorry for this being so late, but I do appreciate you're appreciation. If you're looking for any of my "real" work, and more paintings and the like, I would direct you to which is my main account and has a deal of paintings and more visual and traditional work rather than digital and written.

Also, and I intend to extend this offer to anyone, if you have any ideas of anything else you're curious about (anything at all relating to art, I love all of it and will readily do research) and would like to see a tutorial on, please send it my way and I would be glad to look into it. Like I said, I feel like I need to update this tutorial, but I did have fun putting it together and would like to work on more in the future (especially since there aren't a lot of traditional art tuts here on devart.)

I will be looking forward to an update, and look through your gallery. Sorry for the short answer (especially to such a thorough response), but I'm at work right now, and it kind of dulls my mind. Okay, so that's no excuse but still...

Nice tutorial. Very comprehensive. I'm a really drawer but I want branch out into painting so this really helps.

Oh, about the digital tutorial, I think it's just because it's easier to take screenshots than having to stop while doing traditional work and take a photo/scan it in.

Thanks, I hope the can give some guidance on how color works (what medium do you want to get into for painting?)

I suppose that's the case with the digi tutorials, I'd like to make some WIP type painting tutorials, but most of my traditional work is too erratic to be able to segment down and I usually don't even know what I'm doing with it (though I suppose I could just take pictures of something everytime I stop and then put them together for a progression.)

Anyway, thanks for the comment.

Well, I'm really just trying different things out... usually I'm a miser but I do get a bit free with my money when arts supplies are involved. I have some gouache, oils, and acrylics paints and some canvas I've stocked up on. I'm really just trying to find out what I like and how to use these paints properly. ^^
