Description
One person I know has been trying to learn Illustrator the last couple of months...I'm not very helpful trying to explain things verbally, so I thought this might help...of course I'm hoping this'll help anyone interested.Think of it as my way of thanking you guys for sticking around so long [four years, geez]....if there's any other 'How-To's you might be interested in, let me know and I'll see if I can help or not.
Forgive any typos...knowing me I'm sure there's a few.
And I have no idea why I started drawing Darth Maul...weird whim I guess.

i need help i been trying to ink with the pencil tool like you do in the tutorial and im just wondering, is there a way to add to pencil lines so that you don't have to draw the object in one stroke or am i pretty much outta luck? when i try to add on to pencil line the part im trying to add on to disappears. the path just like goes away and i cant figure it out

Deselect each path as you draw them and the one before won't disappear. To make them one path select the last anchor on one path and the first on another and go to: object>average then object>join. Hope this helps.

I usually do this kind of inking on Flash, but recently I've been using Illustrator a lot more and I wanted to switch over. I was using the pen tool and stroke technique. It was ok, but yeah the weight in the lines didn't always turn out the way I wanted. Thanks very helpful.

Way too vague in your instructions. The idea is cool, but you aren't very descriptive so this tutorial sucks.

I loves me some illustrator, it's good to see someone sharing their techniques. Even though I work in a similar fashion, I always find ways to do things different or better when i see how someone else works.
Good technique!

THNX! this helped a lot. I usually do the inking with the PEN tool, but it seems to be too much time consuming. I got a tablet, so I may start with this. I tried on photoshop, but I just can't get used to it, since it keeps the lines just as I traced them... Which is HORRIBLE!

I found the pencil tool impossible to use until I saw you could change the settings. It kept on erasing my lines when I drew near them. after I changed that this tutorial changed my whole outlook on inking with illustrator. Thanks.

Thanks for this, man -- I've tried a number of different ways of inking in Illustrator and none of them have worked quite the way I wanted yet. I'm trying this method on the next piece I do. I think it'll work much better for what I'm going for. Same thing goes for your coloring tutorial!

I'm very new to illustrator but i've been using photoshop for ages. I often out of habit start hitting shortkeys for photoshop in illustrator. Can i change them?
I'm also having trouble duplicating the same pen drawing at the moment. I'm doing scales on a fish so i don't want to do them individually.
Thanks

The thing i like about this tutorial is that it is simple in its explanation, i havn't used illustrator much but just from reading this once i have a better understanding of how to ink my works (since i have in the past done it with the pen tool).
Thank You

you do everything on the same layer?
sketch, ink, color, whatever else?
wouldnยดt it be easier to just put it different layers?
cool tutorial btw.

kheelan In reply to MTB-X [2007-08-09 09:06:22 +0000 UTC]
Yep...everything same layer, just different groups. For me it's easier to just jump in the middle of things....when I'm working with layers, somewhere along the line I've created 100 layers that would do the job of one o_0 But that's me....
and glad you liked it. Thanks.

grouping stuff is cool. just locking stuff makes me go crazy. because if you want to hide something you have to unlock and lower the opacity. with layers that is one click

>< I always find the pencil tool so hard to use... I have to go over them so many times before I get the lines I want. Any tips...? :begs:
By the way, doesn't it bother you to have the fill on while outlining? Doesn't it obscure bits of your picture?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
kheelan In reply to zeusosphere [2007-04-10 08:45:56 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for the delay...overworked at the moment.
Uh...pencil tool. I forgot to mention it, but I drew this using my tablet, so if your trying to do this with a mouse, I apologize for not mentioning it before.
Otherwise...there is a way to change the settings on the pencil tool. Double click on the icon for the tool and a window called PENCIL TOOL PREFERENCES well come up...play with those dials until the tool does what you want.
As for the fill...I'm not exactly sure what you mean here. All my outlines are just black-filled shapes and I've been working this way for about four years...so I think the answer is no, I've yet to notice them covering up something I wanted.
Hope this helps

Oooh thanks for the tip~ I'll try it out!
I dunno... I mean, if you don't close off the shapes the program kinda draws a line from your last point to the first and fills all the stuff between the lines right? It always bugs me... -shrug-
